Speed Hacks?

  • We completed a fort after sinking the same ship twice. They're a Brig, we're a Brig. But both times they got to the fort incredibly quick. We thought they just got lucky and spawned close, but when they sunk us and we travelled back, we entered a chase when they had the fort loot. Fair enough if they weren't cheating, they can have it fair and square, but! We chased for an hour total, constantly on their tail. They tried to board and failed many times, but we noticed eventually after many times of sailing through the entire ancient isles, how we're not catching up to them. They never had their sails correct, and we com'd this saying we should be able to catch up. We constantly stayed on top of the sails yet, no distance gained.

    Just curious on thoughts.

  • @shutpegasus7448 Were they using the dummy sails? There is a glitch that Rare has admitted to existing that, when the wind is heading towards you from the direction you are going, angling your sails directly forwards is faster than putting them to the side.

  • I've seen a Brig where they had their front sail raised, back sail dummy and we've had full bellows side wind and we couldn't catch them! They were infact faster than us! I was like... what sort of glitch is this!

  • @spoonypizzass

If you'd have set both sails to stupid you could have caught them...

  • Did they appear to get faster in short bursts?

  • @ghostpaw The boat is handled by the server... there's no way to make a cheat that increases the speed of your boat. It's basically impossible unless you have a backdoor on the server itself, and at that point you can do a lot more than speed hack your ship a bit lol

This seems like the issue that everyone else has commented on, except even those who commented don't seem to know how the glitch works exactly :P "Dummy sails" isn't just putting your sails against the wind. I call it "Reset Sails" because you only get the speed boost if your sails are perfectly straight in the position that they spawn in. If you line it up as straight as possible, or never touch your sails after spawning, then you go faster than a ship that has no wind. If your sails catch wind though, then you will always be faster that someone with their sails in reset position.

@eddythecaptain Why are you telling me this? What does any of that have to do with my question about momentary boosts of speed? BTW, thanks for the sudden lesson on client/server tech and sail technique. Most of us do know to put our sails in the default position. You are not privy to some obscure bit of info on that. Is there something about my question that led you to go into that? It seems like a strange direction to go based on what I asked the OP. My question had nothing to do with sails or hacks. Players who have been around a while probably know where I was going with my question.

  • @ghostpaw Ah that's my bad, I'm guessing you're talking about GP boost?

I honestly thought you were talking about cheating, since that's the topic of this post, and I commented on the sail technique because other members had talked about it. The second part of my post wasn't toward you specifically.

Also, I don't think I have any private information... If you read up then you will see that other people who commented on this post said:

Every time I see someone doing this "Dummy sails" they usually just turn their sails against the wind, when that glitch has nothing to do with wind. So I just wanted to clarify that for anyone who did it that way.
