Help Noob Pirates - Reaper Chests.

  • So, with all this virus malarkey (I am sure eating a Lime would work) I have noticed many new pirates forced to take to the waters!

On my well-seasoned travels, I have witnessed a common sight, new pirates carrying Reapers Chests and not really appreciating two things: firstly, that they give away their position and secondly that they need to be dropped off at Reapers Hideout…. Many a new pirate shot in the back at Gold Horder’ and unadorned ships slipping beneath waves, with just a batch of castaway chests to ever show they existed….

Please protect the newe pirate, why not pop a cargo style note on the chest to say it belong to the Reaper lady on Reapers Hideout, and perhaps try and keep the “reaper beam” to indicate the reaper is giving away their position…..

In all fairness its a common mistake that you will only ever make once.

I doubt there is a player who takes reapers chest to outposts more than once.

The island shares the same name as the loot and when you hold it, it even tells you where to take it if you check the chat wheel.

    They dont need anymore help.
A crew member will tell them where to take it or we can even help on the forums. For the solo player... Well you should not sail solo unless you know what you are doing.

One of the visions of the game is teamwork. So its fine as it is, they'll learn through their crew.

Thats not even mentioning the plethora of youtube guides too.

  • @daringclarky I disagree on that on so many levels.

Firstly, the player trying SoT for the first via say Game Pass, won't ever come to the forums, only a tiny number of players do. They also won't feel inclined to go to YouTube.... As for the game being about teamwork, that's rubbish, if it was the case the solo sloop wouldn't exist. The very early experience should be positive so they get hooked and not get slaughtered....

The Reaper chest doesn't tell the player that they are being highlighted on the map to all, the beam disappears implying otherwise. Yes, the map hints at it, but it's not obvious.

Why dont you just speak to your crew?

Are you one of those players that joins a ship and stays completely silent?

    Its called reapers chest.
Theres an island called reapers hideout.

There is a chat wheel where your pirate says "i need to take this to reapers hideout" and "this chest is cursed, others are coming.."

How many hand holding features do you need?

You want the ships map to dot itself for you too? Sail itself and even mark the sky with big red arrows to where your destination is aswell? 😂

    Its pretty self explanatory.
    Its not needed.

If you need this then my sympathies pal. We as a community are more than happy to help.

The entire point is to talk to your crew.

Dont need a fancy note on a chest to tell you where to take it 😂

Check the chat wheel, its already there.

For the record im a solo slooper. O do both teamwork and solo. Solo mostly for the challenge.

I never scratched my head wondering where to take stuff as a new player. It was pretty self explanatory. I joined a crew, got shown the ropes and now i help others.

  • @daringclarky

There's an island called Chicken Isle too, do we take Chickens there?

Dood, I'm not talking about me... I've played since Beta (notice the "founder" beneath my nametag"), we're a dedicated fixed Galleon crew, all PL10 A10, SeaDog 50, and done almost everything the game has to offer.... I can see by your tone, why you prefer to play alone on your little Sloop, you are a indeed a grumpy pirate!

As I said it's our observations watching others over an extensive number of hours and noticed the trend of confusion over the Reaper chests. What there is to help the players clearly does not work, otherwise there would not be the confusion.

This is not a suggestion for myself, but for the new players.
    See you on the seas!

I dont have a tone with you at all im actually quite cheerful.
You're the one making it personal.

Thing is mate, if you like a game you will naturally wanna learn to play it better. There are treasure troves of knowledge available and if you are in a crew, its a reason to play together to learn how to be better.

The game teaches you what to do through the course of the game.

    Its not needed.
Not even for new players because they will crew up and be shown.

Plus, how would a piece of paper even be readable or still attached to a chest on a ship thats sunk?

    It wouldnt even make sense.

  • @daringclarky I'm with you. I am also a solo slooper. I have turned in dozens of Reaper's Chests. @CorlethTheFey, we don't 'have' a crew. As a new player, I knew where to turn the chests in at.

  • There is a lot of indications:
    -beam at the beginning
    -red skull on map
    -pirate chat for it
    -reaper’s chest = reaper’s hideout

I think it’s best to keep with this game’s potentially frustrating but enjoyable idea of making the player do the work and figuring stuff out on their own.

Me and my friend just had an epiphany figuring this out on our own which was fun.

All of your "Pl10 A10 Seadog50" achievements mean nothing. It just shows that you have ground up enough rep and gold. That doesn't mean that you are good at sailing, fighting, and all of the other things you can do in the game. The 'founder' tag just shows that you have played the game longer than we have.

I introduced a friend to the game, and the first chest he picked up was the Reaper's Chest. He knew where to take it, and we took it to the Hideout no problem. New players can find things out themselves. I did it that way, and I am still a successful pirate. I have even given away Reaper's as well. I have opened up Open Crew and seen new players know exactly what to do with the chests.

Wow! That escalated quickly! I saw no ‘tone’ in their posts. Maybe you are feeling defensive. They just have a different point of view than you. That does not make them wrong. I happen to agree that too much hand holding takes away the sense of discovery. New players are just as capable as we are/were at figuring out how things work. For those looking for quick answers, many millions of people turn to Wiki pages and YouTube for advice on how to play games. This is especially true when people get stuck.

  • @ghostpaw

This is tone: "Are you one of those players that joins a ship and stays completely silent?"

I highlighted confusion, that was observed, that is all. I watched a guy spend 15 minutes with a reaper wondering to every person on Morrow's Output etc etc That person missed every clue, many just pick up the chest and don't grok that is still beaming the position, given them a helping hand is not much too much to ask.

You must remember that we lot on here know how the game plays, the person trying the game for the first time, say on Game Pass does not.

  • @corleththefey I do remember what it was like to be a new player. I’ve been a new player quite a bit in my life. I’m currently a new player in other games. Most of us have. You don’t have some unique insight into the mind of a new player. We are taking their experience into account. What I am saying is, games that hit you over the head with guides, notes, tips, help pop-ups, and so on can go too far. A little guidance is fine, but not when it robs players of the opportunity to learn from actually doing. Gaining knowledge via experience can be very rewarding. Maybe some players want all the answers provided. Those answers are available for anyone doing a quick web search. But building them into the game undermines any sense of discovery. The players lose the right to find their footing in the world in their own way. Highlighting the Tall Tale locations. The Maiden Voyage. Introductory voyages with banners explaining the next steps. It has all been implemented to help new players, but how far are we going to take this?

For me, it was fun to pick up a chest of sorrows and find out via experience that it would fill my boat with water when it cries. That was more fun than a pop-up/note explaining, “Warning: Be prepared to bail out your boat when you hear this cry!” For that player searching around the outpost trying to someone to accept the chest, wouldn’t it feel more satisfying to figure out, “Hmmm,. Reaper. Reaper. I wonder if that Reaper Hideout place has someone. Ah! Yes! That makes sense.”

  • Just yesterday, my brigantine crew spotted a Reaper's Bounty at an island that was close by. We sailed over only to discover that a brigantine was leaving. Quickly deducing that they dug it up and were moving it, we gave chase. Luckily for us, in their haste and ignorance, they crashed into Daggertooth Outpost. Before we could take advantage of the opportunity presented, however, a sloop approached that evidently also had its eye on the prize. A 3-ship free-for-all totalling 8 pirates battled it out for over 15+ minutes trying to make claim to, or defend, the chest. When it was over, the sloop was sailing away having given up, and the other brigantine was sunk and its crew stranded, with us sailing to the Hideout in glorious laughter with our 10,000 in gold prize.

  • I just don't want the spiral on the chest to have green. It's a red chest, no green anywhere, why the green beam?

  • Why are new players exempted from using critical thinking like the rest of us?

Because the world of SoT is more complicated now than when it launched?

  • I will be honest, I took a break from game so when came back I had no clue what this new strange chest was. Me and my friend googled it lol.

I wouldnt mind a note on it that says "take tor reapers hide out" why do I care? I dont think its that big of deal though but if devs could just throw that into an update one day.

I would not want it to warn people though that they are marked. Like @Ghostpaw says I enjoy the little surprises these chests have to offer but I like I said I personally would not be against a delivery note since other chests have them.
