Increase server size

  • Idea: update the server size should be increased to around 40 - 50, this would make having huge alliances better and making it more fun for the PVP players because they have more people to steal from. This would also open up the possibility of new areas of the map. what are your thoughts

  • The griefing would be so bad nobody would play. Plus, there are not enough islands for ships to spawn at, and the map is about maxed from what I've been told.

  • @rowdy-reid I think the spawn point thing is understandable and it could be addressed by adding new outposts, or activating marrows for spawn. bu i dont think there would be more griefing, because the people who grief would be canceled out by the people who dont. It is really up to chance if you get in a server with some rotten apples and i dont think that would change if the server size is 50 or 10

What do you mean by 'server size'? Do you mean ship count? That is at 6 per server, which is how it was intended for the number of intended counters based on the amount of time played after much testing. It's also the number of outposts which can simultaneously spawn new ships into the server, as Morrow's Peak is in the Devil's Roar, where ships do not spawn as to not be forced into dealing with the instability of the region. The servers are also at the limit with the load they can take in terms of ship count, due to the several hundred interactable points and moving parts which must smoothly move alongside ships.
If you meant player count, it currently sits at 6-24 on a full server, ranging from all ships being solo crews to them all being full galleons (both unlikely events). Increasing it could be done in two ways: increasing the ship count, or making bigger ships. The ship count is unlikely to be increased, as stated above. Rare have gone so far as to state that in the event of another map expansion (which they do not currently have planned), they would add more ways to track down and encounter other players rather than add more ships. This has already been seen with the additions of the skeleton fleet, common strongholds, Fort of the Damned, reaper's chests and Reaper's Mark. As for larger ships, Rare has shown a distaste in this possibility, but it is also one of the main requests for the game, by the most people (crossplay opt-out and PvE servers/zones are debated by the same few, so while they are by far the most frequently requested features they are not the most widely requested ones). As such, Rare may do it in the future, as creating and balancing a larger ship can take quite some time, as will making something to set it apart from the rest.

  • 40-50 ships, are you crazy?

Adventure isn't a battle sim. I'm fine with them raising the cap to 10 but that's about it

  • They need more ships on a server. I feel 8 should do nicely. The roar opened up new playable area, just add another two ships per server. It'd make things more lively, and give reason to ally up for protection.

  • If they had a new region to make the map bigger this would be amazing.

  • @densestwind9199 you're basically looking to create a target rich atmosphere, completely disregarding the economy of the game. Nobody is going to collect loot with 3 or 4 ships around them because chances are they will get attacked by one as soon as they stop at an island. The map isn't as big as you think it is.

  • Eh, before this could even be considered the map would need to be expanded immensely. It is not that big as it is and I think people forget that. Just cause you added the Roar is takes little time to sail from edge to edge with 6 ships around.

Even then, server performance would need to be monitored. Not that it can't be done, but when you have that many connections at different latency it could be some issues for people.

I feel this would hurt the PvE side of things. Balance really needs to be maintained, and even though we are in a time of more looting and PvP, there is a balance that needs to be maintained. For example, I can pretty easily get into a sever and drop 2 - 3 ships and grab all that loot. If I can do it many others can. More ships and that means that I have even more incentive to get into these servers and go after 3 - 6 and I bet I would get the same outcome. Doesn't really keep the balance in my mind. Cool for the PvP side, bad for the PvE side.

Now maybe with this is mind we get a new mode that is like a war and that would be cool. But in the core of the game I don't see this being best for the overall game.

  • @itz-majman sorry for the misconception guys, i meant 40 - 50 people

  • @densestwind9199 This likely won’t be happening. As Joe Neate explained in a dev stream not long ago, ships are the most “expensive” (process-wise) objects in the game. The devs don’t see increasing the number of ships on a server as something they will be doing. Never say never, but definitely not any time soon.
