So just how does a legendary end game ship not become an offset of power?

  • So sifting through the press, were told that at a certain point you'll join the legandary pirates (cough locked area until high enough level cough cough) here you'll gain access to upgrades that others won't have (strange, thought we were against player bounderies). These ships will be significantly different than the others as they are legendary ships.

Ok someone stop me here but have we not just come full circle. The concept of power progression is a growth in power, by turning this into a toggle (legendary or not) is no less a power progressive model. Area are off limits until you prove yourself worthy (very mmo style) and micro transactions seem limited to things you'd want (pets) rather than cosmetic changes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still interested to play but will definitely be using my 14 day free trial of gamepass to do so before i put any money in. I'll tell you then if this is the game for me or not.

Again not disappointed but definitely concerned.

  • @laughsmaniacaly My take-away from the articles I read was that the "Legendary Ships" were cosmetically different but functionally the same as our standard ships. They are "hey! look at me I'm a big deal" devices, not "I can destroy you now" devices.

  • @laughsmaniacaly Your belief is in the wrong context. The recent articles released describe a player achieving Legendary status, Legendary hideout, access to new Legendary voyages.

The customization options are all cosmetic. There is no power imbalance when you become Pirate Legend. The only advantage you have as a Pirate Legend is the ability to purchase Legendary voyages that other players wont be able to get (until they reach Pirate Legend). However, You are able to bring along your Crew to the Legendary Hideout, and are able to vote on those Legendary voyages with your crew (even if your crew members are not of the Legendary status).

Hope that clears it up for you.

  • @scheefinator said in So just how does a legendary end game ship not become an offset of power?:

It's all cosmetic dude, no power. When they talk about upgrades, they are referring to cosmetic upgrades for only Legends.

This was my take on the information as well.

  • Also, they made it a point in some of these articles to mention that if you were in crew with a Legendary Pirate, that you will be able to access this secret area and go on these secret voyages.

  • I actually did hear in one new press review that they said the legendary ship will have a different weapon loadout.

  • Legendary ships is a blessing but also a curse, you'll be a beacon of every lustful PVP players dream to take out a LEGEND of the sea, i mean it would make sense for the player who takes out a legendary ship to become an instant legend, just like it would be if you are the first players to beat a kraken.

Ive tossed this idea before but it's basically like AFRO samurai, there is only one HEADBAND and there is an eternal battle to acquire it

  • @hallskar They also said the ship has access to stuff non-legendary ships do not. They made it sound like it was more than just voyages and stuff, but actual functionality.

  • @chosen-predator The weird thing is if I play a while and I still suck at the game, and I eventually get legendary status because I put time in, then you sinking my ship isn't really anything special. I'm not that good after all. I just put time in.

I will never be as good as most of the players in this game. I'm an older gamer and have kids and a lot on my plate, so it's gonna be an hour here or there, I won't make progress or get very good very fast. So if I reach legendary, I can guarantee people will be able to sink my ship pretty easily.

I wonder what kind of rewards people will get for that? I'm already going to be a tempting target when I'm not legendary lol.

  • @hallskar I'm reading it as your crew won't will be able to join you IN the Legendary hideout (they will need to have Legendary status themselves) but will be able to join you in the Legendary voyages aboard your Legendary ship.

  • @gholin
Dad here with kids as well. What time zone. I'm US East Coast. IISrgntwolfII - feel free to add me, I'd be glad to have you in my crew.

  • @iisrgntwolfii I'm US Mountain, so a little bit offset, but I'd be happy to be shipmates when we can, see what kind of trouble we can get into :) Will add you!

  • @lizalaroo Hmm, I don't know about that, read this again and tell me what you think:

"...you can embark on legendary quests even if you're not a legend yourself, and a legendary pirate can take up to three pals down to the hideout."

  • @ethnine OOf! :D Apologies! I think I need to get new glasses! Everyone's going to want to be your friend then! If they can get you in to the 'special club' :D

  • @lizalaroo I was really just making sure I didn't misunderstand it either. I feel like there's so much information out there that its hard to keep everything in order.

  • @ethnine Agreed, a ton of stuff to take in. All very interesting!

  • @gholin I did not see that in any of the articles as they have stated there is absolutely no power over non-legendary players. They mentioned that everything was cosmetic, and not a functional aspect.

  • There are two end-game titles...

Legendary Pirate - what is being discussed - and "Legendary Captain".

Which upon obtaining you take over the secret cove and even get the big ship in it. Which looks completely different in both cannon layout and rigging.

  • In my head im just thinking "will this end up an E.V.E online" top 10% get all the shizz where the rest get the scraps?

3 weeks after launch everyone will have one...

  • @Ethnine @lizalaroo I've noticed some pieces of conflicting or known-to-be-wrong info in a couple of the articles too, which makes it super fun to go through.

  • @shadowstrider-7 No joke!

    lol awesome!

  • @laughsmaniacaly
I definitly understand your concern as these are the areas where the game rides close to a very slippery sloop. I had mention this before in other treads. Like when they said clearly in the progression video that all upgrades are purely cosmetic and all player will start with all the same equipment and yet they sold the blunderbuss in the beta. Now keep in mind we still don't know how the legendary ship and it's "upgrades" will work but this clearly is a case off cross messaging and should quickly be cleared up before people start getting the wrong idea.

  • My understanding is that the legendary ship will have a different appearance and different customization options. You may be able to build up it's reputation or level it up so that you unlock more customization options. Beyond that, the ship does not function differently to any other ship in the game.

My question is will you technically own two legendary ships - a sloop and a galleon?

  • @laughsmaniacaly Rare has stated that the hidden hideout was accessible during the closed beta and that you can bring your friends if you so choose. The hideout is not locked behind getting a high level, but rather achieving it is easier if leveled up.

  • From what i've been reading, Dev/Staff posts across the net, this Legend ship will only have cosmetic upgrades. I would be curious to read where people are finding otherwise. Same number of cannons, plank/cannon/banana storage, sails, speed, etc.

Please post where you're finding that this Legends ship is different, in any performance category. I'm certain ALL of us would like to read through it.

  • Will there be an achievement for sinking a legendary vessel? :D I almost surely will never have one as I doubt I will get too involved in missions, but ah to sink one solo. True glory, indeed!

Except you can kill them and take that shizz. I will definately be hoping to get Legendary status pretty fast but so help me if I happen across someone who got there first. Batten down the hatches boys there is going to be a fight!

I almost think it would be more glorious to get a piece of legendary gear from a stolen Ancient chest BEFORE you reach legendary status.

    "Where'd you get that hat?"
From a chest I robbed off some legendary swabbie after blasting his precious ship to pieces!

  • @ecljpse ya atleast there isnt a sense of overpowered items and such.

Think its just my doubts of MMOs in recent years.

  • @ecljpse
You'll be needin' a lot more practise wit' yer cannons 1st ya scurvy dog.

  • @logansdadtoo Never said I'd use cannons LOL!

  • I think that devs actually said that new pirates will be able to join in on legendary 'adventures', they have also said that they want weapons and equipment to be the same for all, but I'm not quite sure about ships, though.

The other thing is that I am not sure what they mean by legendary voyages? Are those like a new batch of quests on the same seas, doing harder things ? Does that lead to legendary cosmetic items (most certainly)? What after that though ?

I guess what's next will come out in later patches. I just hope that it will not be too easy to clock whatever content is available on the 20th in less than 3 months, though I am sure many will put themselves in that situation, with no regrets ;)

I hope that the legendary phase of the game will open up new seas, new features other than the legendary ship and quests.

    Cheers,

Well, battle prowess is only one measure of a pirate's worth. And arguably, one of the lesser ones. For what drives a true pirate more than anything is getting their hands on as much gold as possible.

If you've got the booty, who cares how you made it?
