New Podcast Thoughts

  • Listened to the new podcast and I have some thoughts...

I think the issue with the Return of the Damned Adventure is that Pendragon was set up to fail. You mention that it was never certain that Flameheart would win, but I disagree. Numbers may have shown Pendragon ahead of Flameheart at some point, but the way you all talk about Flameheart shows how important he is to the story. He was never going to lose to someone like Pendragon. So, while I don't think the adventure was rigged, I definitely think Pendragon was set up to fail.

In my opinion, Flameheart is not a pirate and any pirate that follows him is not a pirate. The Reapers Bones are a cult who follow their cult leader Flameheart. You said it yourself, he chose himself over others, why would I follow someone that doesn't give two s*it's about me. He escaped rule and tyranny and hated it that much that he came to the Sea of Thieves to impose rule and tyranny. That is not freedom.

I know it sounds like I'm bashing the whole idea of Flameheart and the Reapers, I'm not, Reapers are a great addition to the game and having a villain like Flameheart is a must for any game. But let's not pretend his plans for the Sea of Thieves or anyone that lives in it are positive.

Athena's Fortune needs some attention next. There is suppose to be a war between these two factions. Currently, Reapers have the Burning Blade, Reaper Camps, Skeleton Runes plastered around the world, the Ashen Lords and soon will have more skeletons roaming the islands.

Athena's Fortune have...not a lot. They have a voyage and hourglass cosmetics. Reapers have been long overdue a make-over like all the other trading companies got, but let's not forget about the faction they're suppose to be at war with because if it continues like this, you may as well end the war, declare Reapers the winner and rename the game to "Sea of Reapers"

That was pretty much my takeaway from the podcast, as well. But I think that hypocrisy is an intentional flaw of his character. He's as much of a tyrant as those outside the shroud.

I don't take any sides in this war. As far as I'm concerned, they're all trying to impose their own ideals of piracy on others. But I hate the idea of the Reaper's as a PvP faction more, from a gameplay point of view. While I admire giving it a go, I think focusing too much on mixing PvP with PvE in a game which is unbalanced by nature has led to a lot of frustration. I think we'll see more of that echoed next season.

Yeah, I think this choice adventure was the worst one for that reason. Who will the community choose, a guy who was narratively made to screw up several times or the villain that they've been hyping up for 6 years? LOL

It would have been a lot more interesting if people went against the obvious choice but that had very little chance of happening.

Flameheart's speech makes no sense the way it is presented, I always try to reconcile it this way, he will dominate the Sea of Thieves but in doing so he will turn the SOT into an anarchy, acting only against those who challenge his power and ensuring that no one imposes rules on those seas again. This way everyone below his power can do whatever they want.

The problem is that this is never said, it is normal for authoritarian figures to be hypocrites, but generally the hypocrisy is not as evident as in the reapers' speech.

  • Boo Ramsey! Yay Flameheart!
