Crashing on AMD hardware related to in game storms.

  • I saw a post about this, but I can't revive it. I wanted to confirm what one player had mentioned. I already submitted a ticket, but I wanted to make other players aware of this.

    My setup:
    MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
    2x8GB 3200hz DDR4 ram
    Ryzen 5 3600
    RX 6600 XT
    I have AMD SAM enabled.
    I play on a 27" 1440p monitor.
    Microsoft Store edition.

I haven't played much SoT since I got my gfx card last christmas, but when I do I encounter frequent crashes. When I read a post about AMD users having the same issue, one of them mention that storms were an issue. I played for a few hours yesterday and I'm fairly certain this is the cause of the issue. Everytime we entered a storm my game promptly crashed. The storm from Veil quests didn't seem to have an effect, only the world storm. If anyone else can confirm this it would help getting this issue fixed.

  • Played for over an our. Went through another storm and my game crashed.

    EDIT
3 storms have crashed my game

EDIT: I've lost track of how many times my game has crashed.

  • @darkechoes6494 Which driver version are you using and are there any error entries in the Event Viewer application log? Might be helpful to send that in a support ticket to Rare if there is, since it might help them locate what is causing the crash.

I'm using an older AMD video card with the latest drivers and haven't had any crashing issues myself.

  • @darkechoes6494 I have heard of a problem involving AMD and Steam versions in storms specifically.

The 'solution' was to turn off 'Steam Shader Caches'.

I don't use Steam enough to know how or where you would do that I'm afraid but someone else may be able to point you in the right direction as a possible thing to try. 🤞

  • @triheadedmonkey I'm playing the the MS store

  • @d3adst1ck 22.5.1

  • I've tried clearing shader cache with no luck. Every time I drive through the storm my game crashes. Can confirm the storm is the issue. Whether it's a driver issue or a rare/ms issue im not sure.

  • Anyone figure out an answer for this problem? I crash in the storm every time I go into one

  • @darkechoes6494 Did you Suffer Crashes or no?

  • i got this since i bought the game, i just got used to avoid storms and drop my loot in the barrels whenever a storm comes near.
i use a AMD Ryzen 5 4650G (Processor with graphics)

  • @golexgames I haven't been able to play in a while and I've also gotten a new CPU, so I'm unsure if it's driver, or game related.

  • @darkechoes6494 I'm getting a 58003DX today, I'm installing it this weekend I'll tell you since the processor does both.

  • @darkechoes6494 i have the same issue i have amd hardware too i dont know what to do

  • @darkechoes6494 Hello! I used to struggle with this problem regularly before getting a new PC without an AMD GPU. I spent hours upon hours trying to find a solution and the only thing that I found to help was to adjust my settings as such:

    Shadow - Common
    Model - Rare
    Texture - Rare
    Water - Common
    Lighting - Common
    Particle Effect - Common
    Particle Resolution - Mythical
    Animation - Common
    Unique Mesh - Common

NOW, let me be clear, I don't know WHAT or WHICH setting was helping me when this was going on, and this wasn't a solution for some of my fellow AMD users. But every other update I'd have storm crashes again and have to switch from Microsoft to Steam, then eventually change my settings to such and it kind of just.. went away. It would happen randomly every now and again, I'm not sure what exactly in the storm is causing AMD GPU's to crash specifically. Doesn't make the PTSD of being afraid of crashing any better, I used to just go to the ferry and wait for the storm core to pass so that I wouldn't crash. I'm sorry you're dealing with this and I hope these settings help! This has been an ongoing issue for a very long time, from what I've researched.

  • I solved it, a user collected info from AMD integrated video users reported this same problem of excess particles that causes game to crash and also happened to other games, the amount of rain particles and the amount of pixels that each particle have ends up activating the AMD security system thinking it will start to heat up/damage the cpu even disabled AMD crash screen app.
So i tested the 3 layers of rains and I didn't crash for a long time with the right settings according to my cpu specs.

Config in game or find the config file:
    Windows + R / %LOCALAPPDATA%
    athena/saved/config/windowsclient/GameUserSettings.ini
    or
    packages\Microsoft.SeaofThieves_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Athena\Saved\Config

    DISABLE:
    ParticleEmitterQuality=0
    ParticleResolutionQuality=0
    SmoothFPS: false

Still give you another crash on high details.

    For PvP (min):
    ModelDetail=2 (rare)
    AnimationQuality=2
Set others to Cursed if you want to increase the model and animation, keep testing and 60 fps needed.

I hope this info helped you guys, if it keeps crashing, give me an answer and I'll be trying to solve this problem.
If you have someone more expert, please help us with advanced settings involving particles and textures.

Why not just uninstall the AMD Security System or tune its settings?

  • @personalc0ffee I uninstalled the systems that did this, it still happens and crashes, but I'll be trying to resolve this.

  • I have an almost identical setup (6600, 3600, 32 gigs of RAM) and don't crash in storms, so it's not hardware.

But I use the gamepass client, not steam.

  • This is why I refuse to use AMD gpu's.

  • I found the responsible for the crash, its "precision boost overdrive" on bios and disabled it, now i can play on Mythical in all graphics except particles and model texture.

    Follow these instructions:

    1. Overclock in the bios that is involved iGPU:
      gpu boost set on manual
precision boost overdrive set on disabled

    2. Disable all amd app settings and boost that are bound to SoT.

    3.AMD app crash warning:
msconfig / services / find the "AMD Crash Defender Service", disable and apply, restart your system.

4.Check that the processor temperature does not exceed 75°C.

    1. Windows + R / %LOCALAPPDATA%
      athena/saved/config/windowsclient/GameUserSettings.ini
      or
      packages\Microsoft.SeaofThieves_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Athena\Saved\Config
and look for SmoothFPS and set it to false (no capital letter in the F).

If FPS drops alot or crash happens again, keep decrease these settings:

    ModelTexture: CURSED
    Particle Effect Quality: cursed
    Partique Resolution: cursed

I'll explain why the "Model Texture" and "precision boost overdrive" is responsible for the crash.
This configuration causes each rain particle to be shaped for the best image quality, this is a bomb for virtual memory, and thus ends up forcing the AMD system to activate security to avoid damaging the cpu by "precision boost overdrive", it's weird how the particle optimization of this game was done.

Precision boost overdrive allows processor to run beyond defined vallues for PPT,VDD_CPU EDC, VDD_CPU TDC, VDD_SOC EDC, VDD_SOC TDC to the limits of the board, and allow it to boost high voltages for longer durations than default operation.

If there is another apu / gpu that is crashing, i will be trying to fix it.

I made a video playing in the storm entering the 3 layers of storm, All graphics on Mythical.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DiYpQVbcuk

    My specs used for testing:
    4600g Ryzen 5 Vega 7
    3.7 - 4.2 Ghz
    Ram 13.8 + vram 2 gb

  • @toniblazer
    You tested with an iGPU?

  • @scheneighnay Yes, AMD processors that have G in front of the number have integrated GPU, i was confused why people keep calling these processors APU.

Is all of that really necessary.

Surely you can just disable precision boost?

  • @personalc0ffee Good question.
"Precision boost overdrive" is the part of overclock, After disabling the crash screen desapeared, i left and joined storm 4 times for sure, never appeared again.
Overdrive allowed you to force the iGPU to work beyond the limit, this was why the crash screen appeared to avoid the damage can cause by massive rain particles with more "Model texture" details in game, disabling it will work normally but lower fps when entering places with very high particles (it shoud be), will not keep fps high and crash instantly like before, this is good for lifespan of your processor.
The most impontant to disable is "precision boost overdrive" and "AMD app crash warning", its the first problem to run the game, others like "AMD app settings", "File config and ingame config" can be tested by each user after disabling these settings, it will vary according to motherboard and GPU/APU, they can know if a problem happened by these simpler configurations.
Remembering that my method may not work for everyone, if it is still happening, they may be informing here, I can try help to solve this problem.

Basically if you disable the auto overclock, which should not be enabled by default what cruddy bios

and then also just use the graphics settings in game and tune it it a bit.

That way there is no fiddling with files.

Is that viable? It is already a big ask for someone who may not be familiar with computer to go into bios.

    Basically just 1 and 5 and leave 2, 3, and 4 alone.

It would be nice if someone tested that because actually altering SoT files is against the ToS.

  • Forgive me, the method I showed I thought was safe, I didn't know that changing gameusersettings settings could have some violations, nobody warned me about it, and you warned me that now, why?
I don't have many pieces of hardware to know to give more answer, or several people to help me. I will be making more safer instructions, warning that they cannot change certain bios settings and game file.

Yah they don't take kindly to people messing about with the files, probably because online game.

I can't speak for certain if changing graphical options through the config files like that would net you trouble but better to err on the safe side of things. I'm sure a mod will eventually find this post and let you know.

You can change everything but Sea of Thieves specific files. That's what the ToS governs.

It is quite interesting that you managed to solve a problem that has been plaguing AMD users for quite a time. One of my own crew would have this issue in the past.

My guess is it is the bios settings for overclocking the igpu and just having your settings set too high. Of course if you're an igpu, you should probably be using 1080 cursed.

  • @personalc0ffee no game ever ban anyone for altering graphics trough user files, also devs should be focus on solving problems not banning people doing their job for them lol, anyway thanks for the help @Toniblazer you manage to fix a problem i had since i bought the game (2 years now) and could never find a solution to, i wish you good fortune and hope good things come your way sir.

I am only stating what the terms and services governing the game says. You can't alter files belonging to the game, whether they ban for it or not is up to Rare.

  • I've updated the video and instructions again with a step by step safe method, won't need to access the files, this time I'll be careful when it comes to accessing online game files before asking.
later I will be sending correct "Adrenaline" settings because this will take longer to solve, if enabling any, graphic glitch may happen in some places.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQFgvBPmwbk

  • So accessing the athena files is no longer necessary? It is just the performance boost doing it, isn't it?

  • Hello, same problemes with my amd gpu.
    I use :
    RX 5500xt
    rysen 5 1600 af
    16gb ram

I tried everything but I still crash in storms and even at the end of the maiden voyage so if anyone has another solution to bring I'm taken.
also, I check each time and my components do not exceed 75°C, my power supply is largely good enough for my config and my drivers are always up to date.
    Thanks in advance
