Something for nothing

  • Okay I love the PvP in this game first of all get that out of the way. I had a discussion with a friend of mine that led me to somewhat change the way I feel about certian aspects of the game and something I think could potentially help the situation. I believe there should be something of at least 1000gp value dropped from every ship you sink that has the same properties of gems so it could be sold for emissary value to any vendor. The discussion was about server hopping something that I do, and it went as follows.

Him "Why would I be happy about fighting a server hopper?"

Me "It's about the thrill of having to protect what you've found and have."

Him "I don't play this game for that thrill I still haven't bought all the cosmetics I want or even achieved pirate legend that's what I'm trying to do get gold so what help is fighting someone who has 0 loot on their boat except possibly a log book and a lvl 1 flag that isn't even gonna help my grind?"

Me "the lvl 1 flag is still worth 1000gp I'm pretty sure log books aren't that great most of the time but you take it to reapers and get you some gold for both."

Him "So I risk all my loot for 1k that isn't even going to go towards whatever emissary I'm running? that's if you are even running a flag. Then I have to sail possibly across the map to even get it? I like fighting but if I have literally nothing to gain it's pointless I'd rather try to get away and that isn't fun. I don't think this game is for me."

I honestly don't have a rebuttal to that. Any thoughts on how to make fighting a ship with no loot actually worth it?

at this point it comes down to waiting for season 8 and seeing what effects it has.

it's going to change the environment one way or another so until that change becomes the reality there isn't much to do.

  • @wolfmanbush Yeah that's kinda what I think besides making some new item that's worth what a mermaid gem is worth and works the same but that just sounds kinda like something people could find a way to exploit.

Beyond looting other ships for gold, combat is the only other incentive really. Commendations and Cosmetics for PvP are a bit lackluster so yeah. I'd be hard pressed to argue against his reasoning. SoT has a pretty decent story in the Tall Tales, so he could do those. This like any online game that has PvPandE is going to come with a lot of gatekeeping griefing, immaturity and people just wanting to bully others. There's good folks too, but being faceless brings out the worst in some, and when you can VC in-game, it's like an invitation to a middle slap fight, all your gonna hear is your momma is the worst human on earth, every racial slur known and some new ones, being trash player (usually after sinking a crew made of hot air.) Etc. You just gotta power through it, keep sailing and go in with the understanding it just for fun and not a serious grind. The more you fight, the better you'll get too.

  • @r3troraccoon I agree with alot of what you are saying. I'm pretty pvp heavy but I don't spawn camp and I leave people alone who are doing tall tales or don't have very much loot. I've let alot of people go if they were in open chat and weren't super salty most sometimes depending on how much loot I'll let you go.

Give out exclusive points/rep for engaging in a PvP fight. The winner (the one who doesn't sink) gets more but all participants in a fight get something regardless of sinking. Players can then use these accumulated points/rep gain to unlock PvP exclusive cosmetic rewards of their choosing. This could be a place to put the old Arena cosmetics and/or make brand new ones plus new ship trinkets.

This would basically be a form of passively rewarding all players who participate in PvP to make staying in a fight more worthwhile.

Sinking ships that actually fight back? or sinking ships, unmanned, not moving, has no pirates on board.
Because...you be getting gold for doing nothing grand.

Yeah I can see how it could be exploitable it's just something I was thinking to attempt to address it you know

  • I think the only way for this to be resolved is for attacking ships to have an incentive to carry loot/value on board. This would be either in the form of a PvP only emissary or by reintroducing important elements of the game back into PvE. An example is linking cursed cannonballs into skeleton ships instead of barrels. Someone sinking a skeleton ship for these cannonballs are likely to carry the loot on them also incentivising people to fight back against PvP'ers.

  • I can't think of any incentive that would make me want to risk an Athena's run (for example) by engaging in pvp I could avoid. Still, I agree with Pirate WolfManbush - let's wait and see if the next update can reinvigorate pvp.
