There should be an option to quit without penalty if you are one of two crews and are only one person. It is incredibly frustrating to be forced to wait out those 15 minutes being bullied by 2 people and giving you a very minimal chance to even stay alive.

Never give up, it's only 15 mins long. Only the other day I was playing with randoms on a gally, 5 ships on the server. We sunk after a few minutes, all 3 of my crew quit.
I jumped in the row boat and headed for other ships, they were all anchored battling eachother, one with the chest on board. All 4 ships sunk, I harpooned the chest, made a swift exit to the Sea Post, cashed it in, and with 10 cannon balls, and my Chainshot, firebombs and blunder bombs I unleashed them all from the cannons on the outpost to a ship nearby.. The timer hit zero and I found myself the winner!Sometimes you'll be surprised at the outcome for hanging around, even if it is just you.
And if you find yourself in a no win situation, scuttle! You'll only need your vote for this. Go run around an island, maybe an ancient skeleton will pop up, as they tend to be in the arena more than adventure from my experience.
