Ashen Guardian de-spawns when killed?

  • I was trying out the new Voyages (Solo) with the Ashen Guardian etc yesterday when on two occasions I was killed by the Skellies only to come back to find the Ashen Guardian had de-spawned and would not re-appear.

Is this happening for anyone else? (I couldn't find a post using the Search system in this forum)

I've submitted a Ticket to Rare (Why is it so hard to find the new ticket link BTW).

I like the Voyages and the balancing of the difficulty, but the de-spawn thing makes me a sad Panda.

  • @yourenowontv it is not a glitch, that is how they are designed to work. It adds an element of difficulty to them and forces you to use better strategy when battling them. Emergent captains do the same.

  • Only when solo though.

  • They would probably still despawn if both crew members died together, or all four crew members. Having no more players on the island causes it to reset some things. I think this is just an unfortunate circumstance of playing alone as it's easier to avoid the skeletons despawning by keeping at least one person alive when you have more crewmates.

I use fire bombs as they spawn. Usually that will handle most of the other skeletons, leaving the guardian or master. Just to make sure I don't die, I almost always run back to my ship and pistol them from cover. You never know when your food hotkey will stop working, when your batteries will die, or any other unforeseen possibility that could cause you to die and miss your reward.

Only solo, or do they despawn if no more players are around no matter the crew?

That used to be a way to reset a bugged island's spawns, whole crew kills themselves and all come back at the same time once everyone is on the ferry. Maybe it resets the rare spawns as well?

@yourenowontv sadly it is your punishment for soloing.
Rare are desperately trying to stamp that sort of behaviour out.

Totally, like making kraken easier for sloops (especially solo), making meg easier for sloops as well (especially solo again), only skeleton sloops spawning for sloops, easier skelly lords (especially solo), making treasures digging faster for solo... god darnit Rare stop making mechanics harder for solo sloops!

  • @bloodybil

Our duo sloop got wiped by lightning when we were fighting a guardian. He was still there when we respawned.

Rare is trying to discourage solo play.

Or people are starting to realise the downsides and inefficiency of solo? Almost all PVE elements are being scaled down to crew size, two-tentacles karen and skeleton sloops are good examples.

  • That's the only thing besides pvp that is a disadvantage for solo players though. All I had to do was be more careful fighting them. The Skellies of Fate were the same way. I actually started carrying food ashore again lol.

  • @dlchief58 Ah ok. Thanks for the heads up I'll have to modify the way I play against them and make sure I have the extra health boost from cooked meat etc.

It does feel buggy though with it de-spawning.

The Ashen Guardian's are obviously more of a Snow Flake than a fire style monster it seems for solo players ;)

  • @testakleze Good advice, thank you !

  • It's intended.

Though, as highlighted by @PithyRumble it's mostly only the solo-players that feel this burn. If you ask me, these threats should despawn if they so much as kill a single crew member - to make it fair.

That said - I love the fact that Rare has implemented this; it shows that they're at least willing to make the game more difficult in places. Which is sorely needs, IMO.

  • @pithyrumble Opposite of my experience. I've only ever fought them in a crew and they disappear if the one guy fighting them dies while other crew members are somewhere else on the island or on the boat.

  • @theunionjames They will, if someone immediately near the skelly dies, and the rest of the crew are out of the immediate area, they will despawn. I personally propose they despawn no matter what, if they manage to best a crew member - just to make it fair. After all, one crew member could simply hide on a nearby rock or in a nearby ship to prevent a despawn...

  • @yourenowontv After noticing the difficulty that they despawn while solo; I've found it very easy to snipe them from the ship. This should be a pretty solid tactic at the moment.

    Boring though

  • @tre-oni Well, the alternative is dying, going back to the outpost, buying another voyage, and finding another Ashen Gaurdian. So, go have fun with that I guess.
Anyway; I wasn't even talking to you. Whats with people butting into other people's conversations with needless negative comments?

    Uptight aye?

Am I supposed to care whether you were talking to me or not? You're typing in a public forum, chill guy lol.

Wasn't even anything meant by it towards you. Encouraging boring engagement vs punished by the game though is just a bad way for Rare to start leaning.

  • All I tried to do was help someone win the game and you came here and said 2 words without any context or explaination. And now I"M the uptight one. SMH @Tre-Oni Boring is simply your opinion. Winning for me is more fun than losing. So in my opinion I was trying to help the OP have MORE fun.

  • @boomtownboss context was pretty clear.

As a standard, sniping skeletons from ship with no actual engagement from enemies now because the game punishes you for dying is boring.

You mean in your opinion, not "as a standard". Some people enjoy being a sniper. And there is also the option to use the cannon on them as well. Others find it boring to spam the right trigger on the sword.

That is the beauty of the game, there are so many different ways to approach scenarios based on someone's preferred play style.

  • It's got nout to do with playing solo. If me and my sloop mate get sent to the ferry simultaneously, they will despawn. If me and my Brig team get sent to the ferry simultaneously, they will despawn.

It's slightly annoying but not a big deal.

  • I solo all the time. First time it happened I thought it was a glitch. Second time I realized it wasn’t. Third shot, I went in with fire bombs. I bombed the pistol skelly and mopped up the rest as they burned. If you don’t have fire bombs then close with on the pistol skelly. Get rid of him and the rest are cake.

That’s just it isn’t it, it’s about learning and adapting. There’s still moments where they get the better of me, but on the whole, I love the all-in/all-out challenge of it all, and truly hope Rare implements this sort of design further across the game.

That said - I still think it’s only fair that they despawn upon a single crew death rather than a full crew wipe - just so it’s the same across the board.

  • Just as an update to my original post, I've found it far easier to not do the Voyages and just sail past any small Island and find a random Ashen Guardian. I mean you have to do that to find an Ashen Key anyway so there's no need to do a Voyage at all (Unless you want all the other treasure trinkets that you get doing the Voyages)

Now I don't have an issue with the Ashen Guardian's de-spawning because they are the only Skelly on the Island and it's super easy to just bop them with a Cutlass. The worst I've had in player damage was a Coconut's worth.

Thought it'd be worth letting people know if they are in the same boat while playing Solo.
