Brig catching sloop

  • I thought if a sloop went straight against the wind a brig can’t catch a sloop? This hasn’t been the case the last few times I’ve had a brig chasing me. They catch up. It works on galleons still, but not brigs anymore.

They could have been zigzaging and tacking their sails to gain on you. Were you both going totally straight with your sails straight facing the wind?

  • @bloodybil they were right behind me. No tacking or zigzagging. The one from last week, they got close enough to harpoon the ship.

This should definitely be fixed then. I wish that "sails straight" bug didn't exist and that each ships would sails to their intended speeds.

  • ManPirate up and fight them.

  • Your sail positions are the key when going against the wind.

If you don't know how to place them but your ennemies do then they'll probably catch you up.

  • @purplemajic there's a bug with the sails and wind... If you go (directly) against the wind with a sloop you can outrun every ship in speed.

But there's one thing you should know about that, the ship gets more speed if the sails are straight forward (against the wind).

There are 2 possible reasons why they catch you:

    • You we're mot sailing straight against the wind
    • And/or your sails weren't positioned straight forward.
  • This is something I think has more to do with a change they introduced to buoyancy.

The problem is the waves, the sloop travels slightly deeper than the flat bottom brig and in the big waves the sloop gets slowed down.

Can I ask @purplemajic where were you?, if you remember
I'm wondering if it was The Wilds or Ancient Spire.
I definitely find it easier to out run other ships in Shores

  • Afaik if the wind comes from the front side in steep angle and wont blow the sails up of you turn them left ot right, you still favor from having yours sails adjusted straight forward.
I one time was also catched by a Brigg when my sloop and sails were straight forward against the wind.

It may be the water, @BadassFro is right here.
The water also can carrie you over and change course.

  • @bugaboo-bill The centre sails is definitely a thing, but when a brig and a sloop both do that it then seems to come down to some other factor, as I myself have had them either catch up or just not be able to pull away.

The only thing I know is it started happening shortly after the rowboats came out, and I'm sure they adjusted buoyancy at the same time. This is why I hate the patch notes at the moment, they need far more details as I'm certain I have missed other changes

  • I'm assuming that you know the "trick" of angling your sails to a "dead run" (The setting that should be pushing your Ship backwards) because you've been around the game for a long time.

The difference in speed between the Sloop/Brigantine straight into the wind was never much anyways. And, I believe, the Sloop is more susceptible to large waves?

  • I think an adjustment is needed.....

Directly into the wind, sails squared...the sloop is only SLIGHTLY faster than a brig....and not by much.

One tiny little mistake and they WILL catch you......

Also with the addition of harpoons, it becomes almost impossible for a sloop to escape a brig, even going into the wind, with sails squared.....

I think an adjustment is needed....
