NPC Fishing Trawlers

  • In the absence of missions being available from the Hunter's Call, I was thinking it would be interesting to add an NPC controlled fishing trawler vessel that represents the faction. It is pretty weird after all that the ocean is completely dead sometimes, with the exception of the random skeleton ship(s) in the distance. This world can't exist without trade, and I don't believe for a second that the player base fulfills the needs of this world!

The first reason I think this would make the game interesting is that it would be an opportunity to add a non-skeleton, non-mermaid combat-type NPC to the ocean. You could treat them as friend or foe.

    - Board their ship and casually fish with the NPCs. Receive some passive benefits such as multiple cooktops for cooking, and perhaps a generally higher rate of catching valuable fish.

    - Alternatively you could attack the ship and aggro them. Sink the ship for some random fish prize. Not necessarily in the player's best interest, but this is a game full of pirates.

We need more helpless civilian fishermen on the ocean, and I also think that the psychology of attacking a 'human' target might save some of the more docile PVE players from the wrath of someone who just wants to sink anything that's not a skeleton.

More on-sea interactions, more NPC types, more Hunter's Call updates! These factions need to get off their lazy butts.

  • @gaseousxihro That sounds pretty awesome!

It would be great for there to be something new out on the seas. Especially like a fishing vessel. Even better for there to be something that helps out with Hunters Call.

I like the idea of if you join their ship maybe you’re chances of catching rarer fish goes up, or they pay you more gold and xp then the regular people at the sea posts.

But maybe the flip side of it is if you sink them you get a few fish, but also “other treasure” they've found. Like they’ve found some skulls or chests while traveling around.

That way people that fish have the incentive to fish with them, but other players that don’t care about fishing have an incentive to attack. Maybe the players that are fishing with the NPCs can help fight off attacks.

  • Seems like a pretty cool idea. The concept art book originally had some cool concepts for a traveling tavern. Adding in fishing trawlers / galleons and some floating taverns could be a nice way to add life to the world. Also would like to see merchant ships as well. I feel like the ocean still needs a lot more life to it. Having some kind of fish or dolphins jumping alongside the ship while you are sailing would be awesome!

  • @oroku I like the idea of getting the trawler's additional loot when you sink them. I LOVE the idea of defending the NPC ship, and perhaps that can lend to new mission types in Sea of Thieves' future.

The ocean definitely needs life, and I agree that subtle features like dolphins would really curb the inevitable loneliness. Add interactive birds that perch to your masts or shoulder and I will forgive all the evils of this game.

  • Fishing sloops wandering around would be interesting for sure. Maybe have it so you could loot the ship if you killed the NPC but not if you sunk it. Some will be better fighters than others and you never know which it will be. Maybe they have a chance to have merchant supplies on board too. Could be an interesting addition and make the seas a little more alive.
