Time RARE gave SoT Community "Their" definition of Toxicity

  • @boxcar-squidy Indeed. My point of view is that PvP is not intrinsically toxic but there is a line. Where that line is drawn is subjective I guess, some people are thicker skinned than others and have different outlooks.

  • Warning this vid contains toxic trash talk :(

So i get these things sometimes but i dont want this when i play a game.. its not against me but should i report such things?

  • @Boxcar-Squidy the more of your posts I read, the more I come to appreciate your unruffled and good-natured logic. 100% agree that the word "toxic" is losing meaning due to overuse. It's like we need some new word for "strongly unpleasant but acceptable" for things like getting loot stolen, so we can save "toxic" for true cases of verbal abuse.

  • @vorondil1 I'm not sure I'm as logical or good natured as you think.

"Vocal and opinionated" tends to be the alternative view.

Cheers though. I'll take compliments where ever I can get them.

I'm too old to get enjoyment from other's misery. Life is hard enough, it only gets harder as you get older. Aches and pains, illnesses, deaths, taxes, worries, stresses and responsibilities all mount up and causing distress to another human being just doesn't seem like such a good time anymore.

I can't pretend that I wasn't the worst sort of toxic when I was a youth. We just didn't have xbox live to abuse people over, so it was all done face to face. I think you grow out of it faster when you have to deal with the physical consequences of your attitude.

  • @ruigtand-nl I would say that yes, that most assuredly falls under toxic behavior and there is no place for that in game chat. If they want to talk like that in party or some other private chat, more power to them. But when they subject others around them to that, then that is toxic. Listening to it, it was hard to tell if they were actually friends just messing with each other, or really hated each other, but either way, they most assuredly crossed a line.

  • O gosh, RARE please dont elaborate any further and please dont bring up the pirate code too much. Already was a joke doing it in the new year after summit was playing since u already supported other twitchers I have seen do worse and invite them on your stream. They just weren't as popular. No win for you Rare. I agree with sportsmanship, etc... everybody defines toxicity so differently, just let the people play. There literally isnt one random person I have played with that hasn't said something offensive, no point in addressing.

  • @cokney-charmer LOOOOOOOOOL Thats a great joke! As far as i can say the entire game and so called "community" is build arround and based on beeing toxic! seriously ive never met friendly people in this game.

all u get out there on the server is a pure unfiltered portion of hate and trolling!
and with its unbalanced game mechanics its like the game says: "oh you are an a**hole? great! go and harras other players!"

  • Maybe I'm just thick skinned, but none of the things people have been saying really bother me. I can avoid almost everything anyone can throw at me in game by either muting them, scuttling my ship or switching servers. The only time I would complain about someone is if either they were blatantly cheating or if they started to harass me outside of the game, xbl messages, using my gt to find me on twitter etc. People shouldn't be rude, racist, sexist or any other ist anyway, but they are, you wouldn't bother listening to them IRL so why anyone bothers in SoT boggles the mind. I always play in party chat and only come out of it to negotiate alliances, you can mock people plenty from the chat wheel if you switch your items about a bit. Don't feed the trolls kids, if they're bothering you mute, scuttle, switch, depending on the severity, don't wait for Uncle Rare to have a word, just move on with your life.

  • @nofears-fun

Yeah its difficult to say could be friends joking i dunno but it changes the happy atmosphere somehow i dont like it

  • @ruigtand-nl I agree, and I do play with my kids from time to time, this is the type of situation I want to avoid with them. I know people will argue it is rated for 12, but even at that rating that kind of language is over the top.

  • We all know that this is a pirate game and part of the game is sinking others and stealing their loot. Sometimes that involves a small amount of spawn killing to secure the sinking ship. I think months of debate on these forums has made that clear to the community and to Rare.

If we are talking about verbal communication with others, curse words, on their own, are not toxic, but they can be if used with malicious intent. "Toxic" is subjective based on the intent of the accused. It is all about the intent, not the action. I think if you have to ask yourself "Am I being toxic right now?" then you are straddling a grey area. Be a decent human being and take the side of RIGHT. Put down the sword and move on.

  • I think a lot of companies are making a mistake by describing the problem as 'toxicity'. It's not that it has become meaningless; it never had any meaning whenever it was first used as an analogy.

You describe something as toxic, but forget that what makes something toxic is the dose and the degree to which it has an effect. If you take a purely essentialist view(as has been the case ever since it became an analogy), then everything is toxic to something or someone else.

'Toxic' allows someone to get away with not defining what it is they are objecting to and giving themselves the utmost freedom to choose what is objectionable not by what it actually is but by it's supposed consequences. It's no longer about following the rules and you'll be fine; if someone doesn't like you, you're now 'an unliked person' and therefore toxic.

Gas-lighting is very toxic, but the whole point of it is that only the victim knows it is happening or else it fails when others comment on the wrongness of it. You can't objectively tell if someone is doing it, or if they are just a fool, as they will pretend to be if they get caught.
