Hostile players

  • Okay I know I am not the first to mention this. (So please contain your flames) And I really do like pvp, that's just part of the game and having that "fear of losing your stuff" is just thrilling.
But people as of right now are all just hostile. You can't go close or even enter the same part of the sea without people rollin' up on you and shooting.

A couple of months ago whenever people rolled up on me I just let them be, unless they fired first. I also left people alone that actually knew how to use a mic. (It's 2019, most people have mics so please don't give me the "all players don't have mic"-speech)
But now you can't let anyone come close. This used to be a game where you had all types of players. The hostile ones, the unpredictable ones that could turn on you at any moment, the friendly ones, the noobs, the legends and the pvpers. Now it's all about being toxic and kill on sight.

So what is the reason for this? I have two theories. I am not gonna go into large dept into either one of them.

Theory one: A large amount of new players and people coming back to the game after watching large streams and going "OH IT'S ALL ABOUT THAT PVP NOW!" Sure pvp is part of it. but please give the rest of the game a chance.

Theory two: It's been so long since we got anything new. Yeah Rare is a great company and all that (heard it all) but it's been long since something happened in the game. Legends got nothing to look forward to. And that one thing we all save money for, well there clearly ain't enough cosmetic items in the game. We need more.

So am I the only one thinking this? I don't mind pvp. I don't mind trolls. I don't mind my boat sinking. Losing loot is part of the game. But this is insane.

  • @transistor91
I agree with you here and it is something my friend and I have discussed a few times while playing.
I personally think it is a mix of both of your theories. There are more people who just think it is just about PvP and more people are who have done everything so are engaging in PvP as there is nothing else to do really. There are only so many times you can do something before it loses its appeal.
You don't really seem to come across a good variety of players like you used to, its all shoot first and ask no questions later lol.
I think the last time I can really remember not being shot at every time I saw a ship was the Meg update, and that was because you needed other players to active the Meg.

The main issue is definitely the lack of new content. Be it more PvE events or even jazzing up PvP and adding additional weapons and ways to fight, we need something.

  • @transistor91 (WAVES TORCH) BURN THE WITCH!!!

    Jk.

Theory 1 is close. Its not that people are going "OH its about that PvP NOW" Its more of "hey look at the streamer. He is attacking ships, sneaking onboard, and being a Pirate. I did not know the game was that fun."

More people are interested in combat PvP games.

Contrary to popular belief this game would not have survived if it did not have PvP. PvP was the thing holding it up. I won't get into that discussion but newer players are seeing the game for the first time and they are watching the exciting parts of it. Being a Pirate.

PvP Streamers rarely ever actually do quests. They hunt for other ships. The main issue with the game on release was that the reviews focused too much on the PvE aspect of the game. In PvE you were just a glorified Fed-Ex delivery man, but the PvE was suppose to be supplemented by PvP. The reviews didn't portray the game accurately at all.

With the PvP streamers showing the exciting parts of the game and being a Pirate. We are getting a lot of newer players who want to copy what they are seeing, or some older players who were afraid to PvP now sharpening their fangs.

The wall of text was half of the issue.

The other half of the problem is the null between events. People getting antsy over Arena and sharpening their skills.

  • I've been attacked alot lately, each time by white sails.
So I think theory one is correct.

  • Last night I was trying to do some quick solo runs and every ship I saw came right for me.

So I spent my night making trouble on everyone!

  • You must not play much, just yesterday me on a sloop ran into a brig who i befriended, then i ran into a galleon same server who me and the brig then befriended to the point where i joined the galleon and now have some of them on my friends list lol, not everyone is hostile. I genuinely dont believe you play much or maybe us aussies are just more chill than other people

  • For me its been exactly as you say it used to be you can let people come close and have convos unless they attack first. I think maybe you subconsciously have been wanting more pvp or maybe you had one bad day and it freaked you but for me its been pretty chill i never attack on sight and i reckon less then half the people i get close to attack me. Alot of people who arent willinrg to be friendly run away anyways. Whenever i try to approch people they just run. Like im solo sloop tryna chase galleons and they run from me

I've played pretty much every day for a couple of months. So, yeah I feel like I can say with confidence that I play"much"

  • @transistor91 how long every day?

  • @d4m0r3d said in Hostile players:

    @transistor91 how long every day?

3-6 hours. Depends on what we do.

  • @transistor91 if you do play alot it must be like i said, aussies are chill or you are freaking out to much and arent trying to befriend people anymore, you should let people shoot the first shot, otherwise idk but we are experiencing completely dif things

  • I just want to clarify yet again, I do like pvp. I really do. I mostly pvp myself now a days. (Cause I got everything money can buy) But only with people that don't respond when I try to communicate with them, or people that fire at me first.

  • @d4m0r3d said in Hostile players:

One of the things could be that people you run into actually speak English. I dunno, could be the case.
Cause I can say right now that Europeans are mute and bloodthirsty it seems.

  • @transistor91 might be it, yea everyone i run into is aussie, i imagine if people cant understand you or communicate with you they dont have any reason to trust you or even want at all to help you

  • And tonight I play again. We see one boat, first boat we see all night. And they are coming for us... and they are not saying a word. This game is getting to the point where you can't do quests.

I really don't want to go full pvp. But it seems to be the only way to play the game right now. FeelsFuckingBadMan.

  • Once you become a legend and buy everything from the game things become kind of meaningless. There are only a few decorations to do, and most of them are pretty boring. I have not done the simplest of merchants decorations because I do not have patience to hunt chickens or carrying rum. Those who want excitement end up attacking other players just to have what to do in the game.

However, the game has had a significant increase in beginners, most of the time I see ships with white sails coming up to me. They are no challenge at all, just imitate these streamers, which is no big deal, as these streamers do not even know how to play this game in the right way.

Before I avoided attacking other players, now I simply attack to avoid being attacked.

I generally don't have the problem where new players try to kill me, not "no skin people" anyway. It's people with skins that are the worst. Cause they just go for hunts.

  • @Transistor91 It's because the game does not offer much to do.

  • @targasbr I see exactly what you mean. I am there myself. But still, kinda ruins the game for everyone when there isn't even conversations. Just brain dead killing. Best thing is a mixture of pvp and pve. (In my opinion)

  • @transistor91 I really understand your frustration, but I think maybe this is not the ideal game for you. For example, do not like MOBA games, so I avoid this type of game. I think things are not even balanced in SoT. Well, I expected a game with intense BlackWake-style battles, but unfortunately I hardly see anyone in the servers and the battles do not last for more than 5 minutes.

This is not the game for me? I feel like I've been playing longer than you bud. and even if you have more experience than me. I love this game, I love everything about it. I just feel like all this hostility and toxicity there is right now is ruining the game for everyone. If you feel differently, tell me why. But don't say this isn't "the game for me"

  • @transistor91 I used to play more, played around 4 a day, and 12 a day on weekends. Today only I play 12 a week is a lot. But I do not think that's the point. The game was clear when it showed the game style to players.

I agree with you that there is now quite a bit of toxicity, but it's still a pirate game. Pirates fired in the direction of the opponent and asked to surrender. In this game people simply retaliate, so the solution is attack to not be attacked.

With the steady growth of Battleroyale games and competitive games, it is natural for players to come up with this kind of behavior. The more players appear like this, the more peaceful players get used to attack before to avoid being sunk.

Everything that is done in the game depends on both parts, i think you cannot expect conversation in a game of pirates, at least not now with this infestation of children watching toxic streamers.

  • @targasbr I understand everything you say completely and I agree to some extent. But from the start with every update it seems to be about working together with other crews. Doing the thrones and the megalodon for example. Now there is none of that "talk to others to make the game better". And that's from the players side.

Pvp is part of the game. And it should be. It also should be a bigger part of the game. But as it is right now it's toxic killing and nothing else.

(and for the amount of hours put into the game. I can say that i have way more than you. Don't wanna say how many I have. just that i play way more than that.)

  • @darkjedirebel At no point did I want to offend anyone, just wanted to understand what really bores people. I even gave some examples and reasons for the behavior of players like that.

At no point did I say "go away, do not play this game", all I said was that the game is meant to be this way and gives openings to this kind of behavior, and MAYBE this game is not for him.

I particularly do not like the community of many games, so I avoid them or look for alternatives. Unfortunately this behavior will not change as long as people think that "being a pirate" is what streamers show.

You should read and understand before saying "grow up."

  • @targasbr I read everything that you say. And the one thing that I can say is that I LIKE PVP. PVP is not the problem.

But 2-3 months ago it was "oh another ship. Well I hope they don't come." or "Oh another ship, let's fight them" or "Oh another ship, let's try to befriend them!"

Now it's 100% "Oh another ship. Well better get ready to fight"

  • @transistor91 I get it. I'm not saying that PvP is the problem, but the behavior of the players. I liked it more in the past, the lore was part of the game and we could make alliances, sometimes even a ship betrayed another, but it was part of the game proposal.

Today everything I see is a toxic behavior of players who think that even Mario Kart is a Battleroyale game. But I do not think things will change.

  • @targasbr said in Hostile players:

So we agree then. I don't think things will change either. But I want developers to read and understand what we are saying.
I am 110% against PVE servers, cause that's just not sea of thieves any longer at that point. But right now I might as well play fortnite, I have less chance of getting attacked for no reason there. (jk never sinking that low, excuse the ship pun)

  • Keep calm and don't panic. Its just a phase the game is going through.

As a plus side to it all; the game is getting a lot of attention on Teh Internet(s), and that is hopefully a very good thing for the future of the game. Lets just wait for the Arena and the new stuff that they are adding to the adventure part... perhaps it will balance out everything and calm the seas.

    Happy sailing! :)

  • @transistor91 I believe it's something that is out of power even from developers. Let's hope these players soon get tired of SoT and go back to Minecraft.

  • @targasbr said in Hostile players:

If we had more to spend money on. that would fix some of the problems I think. Cause at a certain point you don't have to do voyages any longer, cause money is just unnecessary.

  • @transistor91 I have some friends who own a few millions in the game and nothing more to buy.

It's nothing to do with being afraid.. these kids that like to copy the streamers are so toxic it is not funny anymore at all, my fangs have been shown and been sharp since the first day of the game.

  • I still have plenty of non-hostile encounters. to say that all encounters are hostile would by hyperbole. sure, there are more aggressive pirates out there but, imo, that has only enhanced the experience. it's sea of thieves, not sea of friends.

Well we have real different experiences then. It's GREAT that there are more players in the game right now. It's great that the game is getting more attention. What I don't like is that every encounter right now is hostile. It's shoot first, ask no questions at all later.

And if you get someone to talk they yell over their mics that they are having relations with my mother. (never knew she was that way. Gotta have a talk with her...)
