3rd person perspective

  • Just wanted to know what everyone thought about 3rd person being in SOT. I think it would be great seeing as the aim of the game is to lvl up and earn new cosmetics, I love third person and I love being able to see my character in all games that allow me to customise them. I find myself using emotes in this game constantly to see my pirate. third person wouldn't give any kind of advantage to players in this game due to how cramped the ships are and how fast paced the fighting is in the game, and the fact that if you really wanted to you can use an emote to see around corners. Therefor I see no reason not too add third person.

  • a search of the forum would give you a general idea on what people thought on this topic. most of it was negative and not very popular. I am against it also.

  • Definitely a "no" from me.

  • @d4m0r3d Rare has made a choice to go for first person perspective after trying out both the options during development. This is due to the type of immersion, scale of the world (feeling) and combat they were aiming for.

Therefore though it's nice to see your avatar and I doubt most would disagree. Rare wants you to be the pirate. For this reason first person view has been deemed the best option to achieve that.

  • I'll just post this again... (mostly because I love you guys so I don't mind doing so)

  • @cotu42 if the player wanted full immersion they could just chose first person though, and I personally am able to be fully immersed into third person games. and like I said I dont see combat being any different with third person, and if they wanted they could just make it so combat forces third person, like if you are holding a weapon then there you go first person or even any item. but oh well I guess.

  • @hynieth Beat me to it, thank you my dude! Saved me a whole lot of searches and tears on my mobile xD

  • what are the negatives of third person?

fartnite uses it. thats a negative.

  • @d4m0r3d

To be honest, I was one of those, early on in development who was really disappointed not to have some sort of 3rd person option. Mike posted a lengthy explanation on the forums at the time the debate was going on and I could certainly see the point of view.

Given that, I'd still like to see more options for viewing your own pirate, photo mode or more camera controls - given that the majority of rewards are cosmetic, it'd be very cool to be able to capture our pirates in more ways than are possible at the moment.

  • @hynieth thank you for posting that lol, interesting but I dont agree with any of it. if they wanted to they could force first person when doing certain things like raising anchor or using weapons and cannons. 3rd person creates more ways to interact with the world. I dont see why you cant be immersed into the world when playing third person. when I play third person games I share them adventures with my friends not my character lol. me personally I dont feel like im onlooking. like I was playing hurt world with friends and I prefer third person in that game and I wouldn't describe it as watching my character, those are my experiences that me and my friends go through. im not gonna be like man my hurtworld character just got destroyed, im like damn dude I just got rekt. I dont get these emotion things that hes talking about. idk when sea of thieves evokes certain emotions, but going off that example of being sick, for me again if my character was sick I would be like im sick, and i know this because ATLAS had third person and had vomiting and I vommited on my friends and would say lol im sick. and I would do this because I made my character. he isnt someone else that im forced to play with, hes a representation of me if ya know what I mean. anyways thats just how I feel about third person and my experiences and watever

  • @katttruewalker I agree, a camera mode and new emotes would be awesome.

  • @katttruewalker i'm surprised there isn't a folded arms pose. I'd like to see that.

  • I love the first person perspective and how it makes you feel like you are really in the world instead of just a puppet master.

I agree with @KattTruewalker though, I wish there were more ways to view yourself in 3D, seeing as all the rewards are cosmetic it seems like an oversight that we can't see our characters with their new sword or pistol.

How am I supposed to know if the blue on my pistol compliments my eyes if I can never see the two together?

Not sure it's a development time priority over other things but I'd certainly support having more options to view my pirate.

I would be against being able to play in 3rd person though, I'd rather that everyone played in FPS but if they could strike a variety of poses including with items to look at the character.

They could even link poses to in game actions. I.e. bail 100 times to unlock the bucket pose, dig 100 times to unlock the shovel pose and so on.

  • I would love it if I could view my pirate in third person while he was playing music

  • @d4m0r3d The devs played around with it and made the decision not to include third person. On Twitter, they recently posted about this. I don't see it coming to the game.

It isn't about what the player wants or think they want, it is what option suits the vision and experience Rare wants to provide best. It is one of the most fundamental design choices in a game. It is an elementary question that seems trivial or just preference based, but really is far more complex and interesting than it seems.

The differences in view can drastically alter how large the world feels, the type of connection we have with our avatars, the emotional suspense that can be generated and the engagement levels we experience. In addition it has large impacts on the strategic elements, speed and other aspects of the actual gameplay as well.

I can only scratch the surface here and there has been quite a bit of research and effort in documenting the benefits of both and their differences. If you are interested in it I would suggest doing more research online. I just know this as I studied game design.

Not that I don't enjoy third person or think it couldn't work for the game. Even Rare told us they experimented with both to make the best choice, as they also believed it to be a viable option to consider.

That said, my character sits quite a lot during my sessions, just because I like seeing her in the world and I would love more emotes in the game. Though I will not in favor of making it possible to play in 3rd person, as I believe that Rare made the correct and informed choice for their game.

  • 3rd person in most games is just used to exploit looking around walls or over objects which is a big problem when it has PvP elements because it provides a lopsided advantage to the hidden player.

  • Only Time I felt a 3rd person was necessary were the first few times I used the row boat.

Now I’m used to it and don’t think it’s needed

  • @d3adst1ck ships are so small and cramped I dont see people using peaking on ships aswell because combat is so fast paced. also at places like ladders they could just force first person and problem solved

  • @glannigan it would be soooo awsome to use 3rd person on a row boat. I would be extremely happy if they let us see our charecter in third person while on the helm or sailing a row boat. that would be amazing

  • @cotu42 It would be nice to have more emotes, or a special camera mode that allows us to go into thrid person and look at them while also letting us take photos

  • @boxcar-squidy that sounds like a great idea. I love the idea of having to do something multiple times to unlock a pose

  • I would at the very least appreciate more ways to see my pirate and all of those tasty, tasty cosmetics! A proper photo mode would go a long way for me!

  • @d4m0r3d You keep saying "they could just force 1st person for this, this, and that." Do you have any idea how jarring that would be to just be thrust in and out of 1st person for using certain items and being in certain places?

Also, combat would absolutely be unhinged. You don't seem to have the slightest clue about how much combat would change for the worse. There's way too many 3rd person games out there, and there are still plenty of us that hate those games with a passion and can only play 1st person. Having the option to toggle doesn't fix anything; that still ruins the game for me due to a multitude of very real gameplay imbalances that crop up. Not to mention that it absolutely makes the world feel boring to navigate for some.

  • @natsu-v2 bruh, if third person would make the world boring for you to navigate then play first person, and many games do have you transition from 3rd person to first person in combat, and i dont find it jarring. the way combat is in this game, no one is going to be shoulder peaking walls bruh, if people wanted to they could just do the clap animation to do that anyways it literally only takes a second. combat is also so fast paced that no one would bother to shoulder peak, and where are people going to shoulder peak lol, only place i can imagine wanting to do that is at an outpost, but like i said we already have 3rd person emotes that you can use, so if it would be a problem it would already be one. but i am interested to know about other combat issues or any other issues third person would bring

  • @d4m0r3d No, you really just have no clue. Someone could be in the captain's quarters and then strafe out and shoot immediately. You simply cannot do that with emotes because of the delay. The ship geometry is perfectly made for 3rd person abuse in gun fights.

  • @natsu-v2 lol no it isnt that delayed, go try it.

  • @natsu-v2 go around on a ship using emotes and tell me if you still think they would still have an advantage. you might find that the ships are so cramped and small and the combat is so fast paced that it wont give them an advantage.

  • @d4m0r3d the combat slows down by being in third person view.

It is faster pace because of first person.

Please read the information provided above, do some research on player perspective and game play impacts based on design choices.

This game was designed for third person, they playtested both and decided that first person view was the way to go.

  • The main thing with 3rd person is that you can pre aim a shot around a corner, strafe out and hit them before they can even see you due to latency advantage. With emotes, your aim resets and you have to track them again after a half second passes between emoting and strafing out. There are many advantages to 3rd person that simply cant be designed out.

  • I would personally like such a feature but Rare have gone into detail on why they chose first person and many have stated they wouldn't like it... so perhaps a happy compromise could be a photo mode or something... could work much in the same way it does for Assassin's Creed Odyssey or Red Dead Redemption II. As long as it didn't allow you to zoom out too far, to prevent an unfair vision advantage, I think it could work and go some way towards keeping everyone happy :)

  • Add it for cliff diving! Your first person zooms out to 3rd person at the peak height of your dive.🙂
