Control remapping overhaul

  • Ahoy there I want to talk write about remapping controls to better ones self at the game. At this moment in time remapping can cause a number of issues as some functions are hard-fixed to their buttons/keys essentially making some changes pointless.

    Some examples

    ** I have re-assigned my Stow/Drop key from X (B for Xbox) to my thumb mouse button; however this does not remap the back-out function on barrels (which is X for PC, B again for Xbox)

    ** Changing the E or Q keys unbind the Row boat functions which means you can’t reassign these keys without giving the rowboat controls a full rework to make them work.

    ** The F key is hard-fixed to interact on Menus like the equipment wheels. For those who find the E key a natural fit to interacting with everything (like almost every PC game).

    What I suggest is to give a full list of all key/button interactions, putting them in lists that don’t link with other lists so that one key can have multiple functions depending on what the player is doing. At the moment we have the current lists as Movement, Interaction, Inventory, and Rowboat which cannot share keys in custom layouts.

    I would add to the interaction list (renaming it Interaction/Menu) to add the keybindings for in menu functions (when using barrels for example) so that I can map all the X key functions to the thumb mouse button.

    As for additional suggestions to improve gamplay through quality of life changes and additions.

    ** Give Xbox players a toggle chat button; PC players have one and it allows them to speak in game chat and remain in an xbox party or whatever chat program they use with their friends.

    ** Add a straighten wheel function – This would be default W (up on the left thumbstick) and would centre the wheel for a straight course. This is because it’s a bit fiddly on PC to centre with key presses to get it perfectly centred, often having it just off left or right and slowly affecting your heading.

    ** Add a switch between sail length/angle – This might mean making both interactions a single station rather then two separate ones. By pressing primary or secondary use keys/buttons (A&D for PC and Left/Right triggers for controller) It would allow you to switch from either the sail length or the sail angle rope bindings. I find sometimes the interact hovers over one of these functions (often off screen) and it can be a pain during PvP or even just PvE.

    ** Add some toggle settings for certain key functions. For PC you have Interact/Disengage on the F key and Stow/Drop on the X at default. Xbox players have X for Interact and Stow/Drop/Disengage on B, I would much prefer if I could choose to have all the cancel functions on one key rather then having most on one then one on the other.

    ** Finally I want to make a suggestion that will affect the game as a whole – Crouching
    I suggest the default keys to be left Ctrl and right thumbstick click with half movement speed, hitting jump (or crouch again) will make the pirate stand and I feel it will really change how the game is played.
