Anyone else excited for the Arena and want it now?

  • Ever since "The Arena" was announced back at XO I have been patiently waiting for more information and when it will be released.
I just love the idea of a quick match on demand at anytime.

Currently in Adventure mode (love that name Rare btw) all current sessions end up being very lengthy like hunting Skeleton ships, the Kraken, the Megladon, doing Athena's or Gilded voyages usually take over 2 hours before you get a loot payout.

With the Arena you can play a match, of unknown length, lets say 10-15 minutes and get rewards and have fun. You also get 50 more levels to grind with the new Sea Dog faction. Which I can't wait to see what cosmetic sets they have cooked up for it, that sword teaser looks amazing.

Anyone else wishing we could play this mode right now?

  • Well @quicksilver7723, ever time something is announced you want it out tomorrow, Rare are good at hyping up these things.

But unfortunately game development just doesn't work like that (As you already know).

Yes. Right now. Come on Rare... all I wanted for Christmas was a Pioneer invite for Arena playtesting.

  • I'll admit, I was a bit nervous when Rare announced the Arena back at XO but my crew and I are very much looking forward to grinding through the ranks of the Sea Dog faction.

  • Ever since they announced it I've bin super hyped and hope for it to be released soon early 2019 to me is jan-march so hopefully please in that time frame! Also an invite for pioneer testing to an xbox pl10 good pvpve'r such as myself wouldn't go amiss :D :D

  • No. After a while arena hardened crews with high pvp skills will dominate the normal area of sea of thieves. Bad decission to create the arena, afaik. I will play Sot as long as it is fun. When the arenas overtake the sea, I will quit.

  • Eh, you guys have fun with it.

I'll stick with "Sea of Thieves: Classic".

  • Excited?

Yahoo, whoopee, let's turn SOT into GTA V online.

Like a professional wrestling Battle Royale. What, did Rare hire some former WWE promoter as a story developer?

    Have fun.

  • @goedecke-michel
Frankly, that's currently the state of the game now. Already hardened PvP crews dominate a server. I can understand the worry with dividing the sea's, but I will be glad to fight actual competent crews. Too many ships sink in minutes on the sea's.

Wow you have no clue, I left gta online 5 years ago because of Safe Mode, I hated it! Sea of Thieves is an truly Open PvP Game!

Only clues I need to see are PC players using macros to cheat. Hardly make this Arena thing very fair, now does it?

  • I am so excited. SoT will finally be saved. The PVP is in the current game is atrocious and people in this game for some reason can't handle losing. I've never seen such sore losers in a video game before. Nobody wants to be attacked, just simple farm out voyages freely and fearlessly for hours on end... to buy new cosmetic skins I guess? Normally, in any other game, rounds are 30 minutes; but in SoT that's how long it takes to simply find another player. It's about time that ends.
But guess what... I'm still going to PVP in the "adventure" mode. You will never be safe :)

  • That's a bad decision imo, they should have focused on open pvp in adventure mode with bounty hunting, which is the way to go in an open pvp game.

Arena mode will not prevent open pvp players to play in adventure mode, and there will still not be any counter to alliances wrecking anything on their bloody war path.

Also now that a pvp focused mode is announced, pve players will just keep requesting for a pve mode.

  • @meurtrisseur Arena mode was never supposed to prevent PvP in Adventure mode. It's another way to play for people who want constant action or only have a few minutes (20 - 30) to devote to gaming.

Call me fortunate but I've NEVER come across an alliance that just sailed around the server taking out whatever ship they seen. I've seen them team up at skull forts and a fleet battles but never just to go around sinking everyone in sight. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but I don't think it happens as often as some people believe it does.

I doubt we'll ever get a PvE mode as the whole premise of the game is to plunder from one another. Rare was hesitate to implement Skeleton Ships because they wanted players to have that constant feeling of "blast! Another ship on the horizon. What are they going to do? Should we sink them or avoid them?" That feeling will be eliminated with a PvE mode. Anything can happen but I very much doubt we'll see a PvE only server.

  • @JE0RGIE-P0RGIE There are other pvp games to play when you don't have much time, in addition arena may not leave many regular open pvp players on adventure mode (frustrating open pvp players like me) and pve players will suffer pvp players even less.

This is already the case with the alliance system, I've been severly insulted lately for having refused an alliance, indeed sinking and killing those poor lads in the process.

I see it coming as big as a truck : "you got a pvp mode, leave us be !" insults/reports/whinings/forum war.

    Great.

  • @meurtrisseur recommending other games to play is a good way to make a dead game. SoT is my favorite game, and currently the only game I'm interested in. I welcome a way to play it in shorter bursts.
People already complain about losing. They're called sore losers. They will always complain. I say let them.

I play other games than SOT, especially when I want to play arena games, but I like SOT because this is the best open pvp pirate game I know of, featuring ship battles and foot battles.

Pull the open pvp feature out or break it and I will no more be interested but maybe this is what devs want : pve focused adventure mode and a pvp focused arena mode. This is a very bad design decision for open pvp nonetheless.

  • @meurtrisseur I'm still going to pvp in adventure mode. The salt is too addicting to give up on. Who ever said anything was changing? Your upset based on assumption.

  • @meurtrisseur Obviously there are other PvP games to play when we don't have much time to dedicate to a long session. However, that's clearly not the point. I want to play Sea of Thieves because I specifically enjoy the gameplay something I won't get from playing CoD. On top of that Rare wants as many people playing the game as possible. It makes sense for them to capitalize on the those players.

If players assume that PvP will end on Adventure mode because of the Arena launching then that's on them. If they start insulting you because you killed them in Adventure mode then you can mute them in game.

  • @JE0RGIE-P0RGIE There are other ways to capitalize on pvp lovers than to divide the community in various modes. I'm not sure this game is populated enough to allow itself such a thing without it being risky.

  • @meurtrisseur Pve players should play garbage atlas.

  • @polemisch

Sea of Thieves is a Shared World Adventure Game where players can experience both pvp and pve elements and make a range of choices around how they'd like to play and the content added caters for both playstyles as well as those who enjoy a little of both.

Above all, it's about players creating stories together.

There are a lot of recent posts made by developers which give great insights into the design of the game and what it's intended to be.

A good place to start might be this one -

    and also this one -

  • I reckon the Arena mode will gain similar popularity than Arena mode in Elite: Dangerous. It's just that "PVP players" (not the actual pvp players that look for challenge and want to fight the best of the best) are looking for seal clubbing opportunities and to ruin someones day for lols than actual fights. In Arena, everyone is going for blood already. it's not what they seek.
But let's hope for the best. Maybe it will be a opportunity for a proper PvP part community shine.

Choises and Catering for both playstyles are completely gone when someone who wants PvP decides to force their style on you :P

  • @clarionz That's the risk of sailing in a shared world, a world which mirrors what might happen in a small, mysterious patch of Sea with pirates of all motivations.

  • @cptn-quickdickn

I'm not to fussed about optional cross play but certainly wanting many different match making options.

Galleons vs galleons, brig vs brig, sloop vs sloop, any ship vs any ship, open crew vs open crews, closed crew vs closed crew, pc vs pc, Xbox vs Xbox. Just many different options.

I don't have friends that play sea of thieves so I'd probably have to join an open crew (although I'd rather solo sloop) so don't really want to be up against an already organised closed crew

  • @katttruewalker So there's basically just the one playstyle available. Be in the open sea, hope for the best and fear for the worst. Or be the worst fear of others..
Not many options available yet, but opening up the arena is going to be one of them. And maybe more will follow.

  • @clarionz

There has also been a lot of talk around the enhanced quest system which Rare are working on, alongside Arena which is due to be tested by Pioneers 'early' this year.

It's all about enriching the world and increasing those choices for all of us.

  • @katttruewalker And like the saving grace of a mermaid, KattTruewalker comes in and takes a post going south like a flock of geese and turns it into another incredible, magical, save.
My long feathered hat is off and I bow to the for your excellence.

  • @meurtrisseur What other suggestions would you offer to PvP lovers with limited time to play? I don't know where the notion that this game apparently only has 1,000 people comes from. There are PLENTY of people still playing and adding an Arena will only bring back players who enjoyed the ship combat of Sea of Thieves but hated waiting 20 - 40 minutes while they searched for ships to engage with.

The Arena was a wise decision on Rare's part and I very much look forward to seeing interested players returning to engage in ship to ship combat once more. Plus the rewards from both Adventure and Arena transfer between the two modes so people will have incentive to play both.

  • i cant wait for arena nor my crew, it will be all we ever play I just hope it comes out sooner then later!!
