I want to talk about the Galion!

  • Hi guys! Since I have the game, I play with 3 other friends, So we have to take the Galion. It have a lot of + things like the speed, the fire power and the beauty!! This ship is my favourite! But there is somethings that I don't like with it... It's really hard to sail and even more when fighting with it even when you are 4...
    During a fight :

    • We need to have constantly one men for the helm (if you want to still have your speed and don't go right in a rock!)

    • Two guys for the repair, cause one is not enough ( like for the sloop and the brigantin ). If you only have one guy for the repair, you won't fight more than 3 minutes.. I really know what it is..

    • And the last guy, is the only one who can shoot with one canon, and on the galion, there are four canons PER SIDE.
On Youtube, you only see videos with a title like "We won in front of a galion with our sloop" etc... The galion is the most easier ship to flow.. My friends and me rarely win rarely win in front of a sloop or brigantin..
      SO in conclusion :
I don't want to be able to sail with 7 mates on a galion, not 6,.. But maybe add a place for one more mate! To sail and fight a little bit easier. We don't want this game to be easy, we just want this game to be just. We'll really appreciate if you take this suggestion! Even if it's just for a test at the beginning, and after the test, you'll see with the entire community!
Continue to make this game great! See you!

  • @mistibri I think that the problem is not of the galleon. You're not sailing her right.

  • We tried all the possibilities we could, but it doesn't change anything.. The gallion is a really good ship, but a little bit too big for 4 pirates. (When you look the skeleton ship, they are 4 only for the canons, with more for the repair, but it still possible to sink it!) We are only 4 to 'repair/sail/fire/...
It's not difficult to sail with the gallion, it's difficult to fight with it. More difficult with your 3 friends than the brigantin with 3 pirates. A sloop will fight a gallion cause he knows that he has more chances to win alone, in front of 4 others pirates. I think it could be really nice to test the gallion with 5 places! Just like i said, not to be an easy game but just to be more fair!

  • Your problem is that you assume that you need speed. You don't. Play defensively (works best with a surplus of supplies) - roll up the sails to slow down, and as they approach, bring all 4 cannons to bear. Unload all 4 as a crew - they'll have no choice but to retreat, make repairs, crash into your ship, or swim.

If they retreat, you've essentially already won.

If they make repairs, you can continue shooting the lower decks to kill and sink them.

If they crash into you, you can overwhelm them with your numbers as their boat sinks from the prior volley and their folly.

If they swim, you can have 2 crew guard the ladders as the other 2 pick them off in the water or continue to sink their boat.

In all of these instances, if done right, you will likely take little to no damage - which 1 pirate can easily handle.

  • Dont need to stay on the Helm, if i am on the Helm of a Galleon, i steer, adjust/set/take away rear and main sails, even in battles i have enough time for bailing, repairing, firing 1 cannon from time to time, front sails all up in battles, this is my helm job...
My crew... 1 always stays on board at battles 2 board other ship, we are fine with this way...

@amancebacabras said in I want to talk about the Galion!:

@mistibri I think that the problem is not of the galleon. You're not sailing her right.

Pirate Legend here, I'm not using that title for bragging rights, just merely to show time played. Majority of time has been on Galleon. Misti is in the right on this, you unfortunately sound new. Give it time and the experience you gain will help to be more efficient.

Here are some small tips to start with:

    1. When in a fight Raise sails. You don't need to be at full mast the entire time. More speed equals less maneuverability, it also means less chances of shots on your enemy.

    2. When doing your first opening volley on an enemy ship, open with 3 cannon shooters or 4 if no obstacles present themselves. Until you start getting holes below deck, that is when you send a person on repairs. Said person patches, and if they need help then send another for buckets until caught up. Person reports top deck for either cannons or ship defending.

    3. Guard ladders. Learn it early, its an important skill. Pay attention to scenarios that present ladder boarding opportunities. Know what to look for to defend against it.

    4. Always be resupplying. While traveling, shoot to islands empty, and mermaid back with supplies. Every time you leave the boat go empty on supplies. Come back full or partial. Supplies is important, we have sunk a many ships that ran out. Don't be one of them.

Edit. 5. Never anchor in a fight. Either raise sails until ship moves at a crawl, or be prepared to be boarded. Chances of lifting anchor during a fight are null. All the enemy needs to do is get into a position of where they can deal damage, and receive none in return.

  • Realistically, a sloop should never sink a Galleon if skill is equal. I've done it on sloops as well, granted sloop has better maneuverability. All it takes is one successive board, or cannon shot to knock them off. A stationary sloop is a death sentence. If you sink to a sloop, the sloop probably has a better sailing sense than you. They make up for numbers with game knowledge.

  • You've had some great tips already, but I think one of the overarching things to remember is to remain flexible. Yes you might have one player who's in charge of the helm, one who's responsible for repairing, another bailing etc, but there will be plenty of occasions when you don't need to repair, bail, or ever steer, leaving players free to man the cannons, repel boarders or even go on the offensive and launch a boarding party yourself.

  • @mistibri You need a bit more practise with a galleon.

You Dont need to constantly at the helm, you'll learn to predict situations and set in a course shoot a few cannonballs, move to the helm, ajust, move to the sails angle/ furl etc.

One guy on repairs is all you need. Honestly most people shoot way to high at a galleon and we rarely get shots on the lower decks, just don't repair all holes in the upper decks. As long as the lower don't flood you're gold.

One of the tactics you could use with a galleon is:

    1. Two sails down (fore and aft pref) this gives you good speed/ manouverability.
    2. Set in a course for a good boradside engage.
    3. With all 4 crew barrage the enemy ship, have 2 shoot the top deck (at the people manning cannons) and 2 at the lower deck (punching holes) if done correctly the enemy ship will have holes and casualties while you keep peppering them with shots to keep them busy.
    4. Now comes the tricky part: If the enemy is slower, raise the foresail and start turning around them, if it's faster or just as fast keep as is. Have a boarder enter the enemy ship to anchor and disrupt.
    5. enemy ship sunk, you won congrats.
  • @mistibri Multitask, thats the key. If you dont try to do only one thing, the galleon is a pretty solid ship (I find her the best for protect the own crews treasure and possitions like skull forts). As stated by Galactic Geek, a galleon playing defensively is yet the hardest ship to sink by a far margin. Remember that you dont need to patch at the start of a battle the holes of the first deck, and putting enough holes in the second one is not allways easy for a ship thats receiving a 3-4man battery fire and are cleaning first the enemy batteries and when they cant shoot back, putting holes at the waterline (my crew usually plays the "afk bait", staying statics and laying down the main deck until the other ship is in a point of no retreat).

  • I want to say a big thank you guys for your help, I'll take all your tips! Experience is a great key like you all said! We'll practise to make our Gallion a really good and terrifying ship! See you guys!
