Anyone else finding servers empty?

  • Third day in a row I'm sitting just outside the fight against the Dancing Demon and there's not another ship in sight. Been over an hour. Waited 2 hours yesterday. Crazy given that the DLC hasn't even been out a week.

Managed the other two, though only one in an alliance but the dancing stun-lock pretty much makes it impossible for a 2 man sloop.

Just surprised that the servers seem so empty. Yesterday I gave up and spent an hour joining public crews and every Galley crew I joined only had 1-2 other players and non were doing the events.

Whatever happened to migrating ships to other servers? Haven't seen that feature in play since the first week. Was supposed to migrate you to another server if you went more than 20-30min without seeing another ship.

  • I’m right there with you lad, I had a hopeful crew but they sailed to Plunder Outpost and spent 20 minutes looking at Sovereign armour. Hey, if you need an extra pair of hands feel free to invite me to your crew, my GamerTag is FrenziedMaple80.

  • @frenziedmaple80 We might switch to a Galley here soon, we have a 3rd that gets off work in a bit. Sucks since we spent an hour fully stocking the boat but oh well. If we go that route, I'll shoot you an invite to be our 4th. Hopefully the new server will have someone to also ally with for that part of commendation. If I'm not mistaken, we have just under 2hrs before it switches.

  • @neolink Hey Founder! I have experienced the same. dead servers. Stun lock sucks.

  • Yeah the alliance system is flawed, we need to be able to make our fleet in the menu before going in.

  • Not empty just full of noobs.

  • @neolink hit me up too. I'm down to sail for the dancing demon

  • Yep servers seem dead, any ships I do find are filled with new players that are on open galleons and know nothing of the skele ships, when veteran players are struggling to battle the skele ships... new players don't stand a chance.

  • Yes been hard to nake an alliance when cant find any other boats period

  • Literally every other server we join is EMPTY with no players doing the event

  • I am for sure, in two hours of game-play I only ever found one sloop. Kind of hard to do event without people playing the game...

  • @neolink yep! Pretty weird though.. I wonder if its a bug or something. It doesnt seem likely that the games dying right after a bigger content drop. The game was more lively last week...

  • I wish they would show us concurrent players rather than just spouting the same old "But 5 million people have played" we don't care how many people have played, we want to know how many people are playing. Sick of only finding one other sloop on the server.

  • Sadly I'm having the same experience 9 of 10 times I play. It's particular frustrating when you need to group up with other players like with this new event. It's strange that the server merge system is not spawning in other players in these skeleton ship areas more often.....

Either it need some adjustment or the player base is to small to do so......

  • @neolink

Ahoy mate, this definitely isn't something which should be happening given that the game should be merging us together into servers with other ships.
If this isn't happening then I'd definitely raise a ticket with Support and also because they've recently announced reaching a total of 5 million players - even if there were only 15 ships sailing, you ought to be merged onto those servers.

  • A lot of time I see 4 ships at the same zone (usually, for obvious reasons, Shores of Plenty). People usually forget that, if 4 ships are at the same zone, the other 2 may think that the server is empty cause in fact they dont see a single sail at the horizon no matter what they do if they keep doing stuff where they are. If you spawn at The Wilds, the server seems empty, and you go for the south to Shores of Plenty, and the server still seems empty, well, "maybe" is not a full 6 ships server, and here is where problems start. When there's more people leaving the game than loging in, some servers will have only 3, 4 or 5 ships while waiting for the servers at half capacity to empty until only 1 ship stays, when the sistem should move that single ship to other server at half.

Maybe rare should polish this to refill servers at half capacity and not only picking servers with 1 ship left despite the servers with 2, or 3, because with the events of Cursed Sails is a problem to stay at servers not full of people.

  • @neolink
My crew and I have experienced the same thing the last few days/nights. We get into a server stock up our galleon, head to the whatever event is going on at the time only to find no one there.
Last night we just starting running Athena missions and only ran into one sloop, and a brig the whole time we where on.
We where talking about this last night. We’ve played since alpha and we have never seen servers so dead unless it was during the weekdays.
I don’t know if they took the server merging out with the kraken and skull forts or if people finally decided to move to different games.

  • For me, the servers have been extremely empty;

Right up until yesterday were I had a good session, but filled with young trolls trying to force an Alliance. I was cautious of them the whole time, as you do with randies, they shot our GP Barrels in our Crow’s Nest in a failed attempt to sink us and take our half share for themselves, the GP Barrels did no damage fortunately enough and we put an end to that Alliance.
Aside from that, attempting to do the Skeleton Fleet Battle’s has been a pain in the butt because every time you get there, there is no one there to help!
Suddenly after you’ve battled the ships and are on the last round before getting the Loot, a Player Ship appears!
Now, after battling the rounds of fleets by yourself, your supplies are too low to take on a Player Ship at the moment. So you have to split the Loot with these undeserving Pirate’s that did nothing but appear at the right time.

  • Same for me. Almost ten hours of time playing cursed sails, and I’ve seen a total of two ships, both doing voyages. I haven’t been able get into a single alliance to take on the skeleton ships. I think the new content is terrific and a great addition to the game, but it’s hard to make progress without allied ships, and the time spent trying to find an alliance without success has been a little frustrating. I would like to get into an epic alliance battle with the skeleton ships that some have managed to find.

  • Honestly never in my entire time having played SoT, even alpha, have I experienced a server migration. =/

  • @neolink ya in the same boat. 3rd day trying to solo crew with a galleon. Not to mention dancing demon glitched so didnt get credit for the defeat. Im not seeing but 1 maybe 2 ships in a aerver at a time qhen the first attempt we had a 4 crew alliance.

  • Popularity seems to have dipped i think. I'm finding the same, every server has only one other boat at most.
Second thought it could be that the skelly ships are adding to the build strain forcing a reduction in players per server. Would also explain why the ships fail to spawn at points.

Shame because the battles are great fun

  • The servers are dead because most of us have completed the commendations in the first 2 days and grinding skelly ships is painful with the amount of time it takes to fully stock a boat after each one. The absence of skull forts really proves the point that the majority of players out there want the pvp action that forts provide. The alliance system is cool and all, but this game does not have the content to become a PVE Co-Op. The stories in this game are made by defending your boat and attacking other boats, period! I have been a fan since the game came out and have logged hundreds of hours to become pirate legend and athena 10, but the DLC and the direction the devs are trying to take this game are disappointing. It feels like the game is dying. We need more ways PVP. Fighting the same predictable AI is so not worth logging on for. Just my 2 cents....

  • From time to time you read a post like this, as if someone's individual experience in the game is representative of how many people are on that server, or how popular the game is globally.

It really is quite absurd. It is almost as if people believe - from their own observed experience - that there used to be twenty people around the world playing Sea of Thieves at any one time, and now there are less than ten.

But, Rare tell us than FIVE MILLION people have sailed on the Sea of Thieves since launch. I reckon there must be hundreds of Server Instances running at any one time; and thousands of players online. I assume servers, in each region, are spun up (or shut down or merged) to meet demand. So, any individual server should, on average, be no quieter than it ever was.

This is the sort of stats I would like to see from Rare:

    • The average number of servers, hour by hour, running in each region (Weekdays, and Weekends)
    • The average number of pirates, hour by hour, online at once
    • The average number of ships per server at any given time

For example, let's see something like this (Just a mock-up):

    alt text

  • I'm having similar issue, spent 2 days sifting through xbox posts, discord servers for potential reliable crews. When I'd finally find an adequate crew we cannot find anyone to ally with or it's the kind of allies that get sunk multiple times before we could even get to the last wave. I simply gave up on this event and I think on the game as well.

  • @neolink every ship I've come across is doing their own thing. Sloops only.

Still trying to get the ancient isles commendation done.

Also why do people join a galleon crew just to leave before it's even loaded up :S it happens almost everytime.

  • @arisechicken666 said in Anyone else finding servers empty?:

Yeah the alliance system is flawed, we need to be able to make our fleet in the menu before going in.

I have said it million times starting in 2016 - social hub like destiny or so (separate from the current game world) to meet new pirates and team up before the adventures would fix a lot of issues.

  • I guess very few people are bothering with the actual event. It's time limited and if you can't meet the schedule then there's not much point doing it. Maybe once to see the fight, but the ships will probably be added into the world after this so why break your back trying for it now?

If you're hanging around an event to see how busy the server is and no one else is bothering with the event then it's going to seem empty.

Could also be a flood of new people, attracted by the latest advertising push, who are off wandering around random islands exploring and not being particularly active in a way you'd notice?

Some sort of world chat would be nice, but the servers are so limited that it's not really worth it.

  • The "Server Merge" feature has been broken since release. I haven't had a merged server for 2 Months, and the majority of the nights I play, are all bare empty.
