Do You Want Ship Wakes?

  • Why not add ship wakes to the game? For those of you may not know a ship wake is the trail created from contact with the water starting from the front of the ship and usually leaving a white trail in the back. It would would be a minor addition I think that would look great aesthetically.

It could even have a gameplay element to it. Like concealing a player almost completely if they swim in it or even providing another ship a little extra speed if they sail directly behind you; or perhaps slow them down, whichever fits the balance more. The trail wouldn't look exactly like modern ships but I think any wake would be cool.

  • I want wakes!

  • These boats really need to..... Wake up... xD

  • @simplybutta then feel free to up vote :)

You do know that galleons leave only minimal wakes right? As a Sailing ship doesnt have a propellor to churn the water into a nice foamy wake.

I've been Sailing for over 30 years and tho there is a slight wake you picture is of a huge motorised navy ship and not a sailing ship like a Galleon Sloop or Brigantine.

Besides since it's dynamic water I dont know how easy it is to code wakes for these ships.

  • @nayfe-pacewell hahah, good one.

  • For a moment, I thought this was how we can honour the sinking of our ships...

But more to the point, aren't we able to do this by using the new and improved BoomBoom Barrels?

  • @hynieth Yeah I know, I looked it up and saw that they don't leave as prominent a trail as some modern ships do but they do leave one. I just couldn't find any pictures of galleon ones.

  • @captnjaq constant?

  • I am bothered by the lack of wakes.

As for ease of code? Simulating it can be expensive and eat up a lot of development time, but simple texture based systems could be done without a big overhaul of the system. It shouldn't be that difficult.

  • I would also like to see plumes of water from keg explosions. Seems like a keg in a few inches of water has it's explosion completely muffled out.

  • Although I have mentioned the lack of wakes several times, I personally don't want them as I'm already running this game at 15 to 20 fps and I'd rather it speed up somewhat and not slow down even further.

If the wake behind a sail boat is minimal then it's really not worth their time to replicate it in game or the loss of more frames per second.

  • its a cool idea, but really has no function. I would rather them adding something that will add effect to the game

  • No one wants the ability to turn their heads in the game.

    Everyone wants ship wakes.

Go figure...this is where the world stands.

  • @norloc that's why I suggest possible features for it and asked if there were any the community things would also work with wakes.

  • @dcr-lt-kanada Upboated!

  • @dcr-lt-kanada I really enjoy this idea. I thi k that the wake should allow you to catch someone faster much like drafting off of a car. I have found in my sloop on sloop pursuits I cannot overtake a skilled sailor even if I am just behind them so it would be cool to be able to. Of course there would be a downside to trying to use the wake to catch up because then they could board your ship or drop barrels in their wake while your trying to follow.

  • @deathsparrow24 Yeah that's pretty much along the lines of what I was thinking.

  • @aod-fluid what do you mean?

    @aod-fluid what do you mean?

I posted a thread about a week ago saying that I wish we could hold the ALT key, or some other key or button and get the ability to move the mouse to turn our heads. This would be nice for running legendary quests when you have 20 skeletons behind you. Would also be good now with the powder skeletons chasing you as well. I was told something with an actual use would be a "waste of time to implement" ... where are those people when we are discussing boat wake?

  • @aod-fluid I can understand that. There are some games that have that feature or even a instant turn around. But in a game where the core experience is sailing some people might just be more interested in more mechanics to it. I don't hear many people talking about being able to look behind you. But time will tell who knows my friend.

When I posted it, I did so as a level 10 Athena. The number of times that people say "Don't look behind you." while you are doing an Athena's voyage borders on ridiculous. Just being able to hold ALT (or a button on the controller) and look left/right/up/down would be handy in those situations. It is a Quality-of-Life feature...that kind of features Rare always talks about.

I don't want to hijack your thread though... I do think the idea of ship wake is cool, but I also see them having plenty of other things that need to be implemented or fixed first. Same with the suggestion I made for that matter.

I was just dumbfounded that something you actually use was bashed by so many while something like wakes behind boats was being accepted pretty well. Definitely not bashing your idea, so don't take that the wrong way. They are both improvements. :D

  • @aod-fluid I understand lol

  • Yes please

  • I totally agree with you, it would add some realism to the game. A couple weeks ago I was on my sloop and I thought "Does that happen?", so I looked behind back while sailing and there was nothing. I was like "that would be cool if they added it to the game.

  • @malachai-prime yeah I always thought it would be cool if the ships were to effect the water in more ways. Even with gun power kegs causing splashing on detonation.

  • @hynieth I agree that galleons in real life don't really make wakes. But we're talking about calm sea! In sea of thieves its more like sailing in the middle of the atlantic and wakes WOULD appear in real life as well in such big waves!

  • Ahoy maties!
