@revanjstone I think it should be understood that the red, blue, and yellow flags are company flags, hence why they're not solid. That said, I think Rare wanted it to also be open-ended, so they compromised with the dual coloration rather than simply put on the key, eye, or globe that marks each company...
WHAT THE FLAGS MEAN
@galactic-geek Exactly, Rare want us to do what we want, like every other aspect of the game. THIS is me must important part to understand.
Like I said in an other post (Flag signalisation discussion), people will use them for their own reason : fun, beauty, lying. But some other want to use it for real communication (like me).
This is why I make my own set of flag signalisation.
Not historicaly accurate, but simple, clear, that fit the Sea of Thieves lore and said everything that need to be said.NOTHING : I just spawn OR I'm shoping OR I want to be sneaky
WHITE : I'm peaceful
YELLOW : I'm doing Gold Hoarder voyage
RED : I'm doing Order of Soul voyage
BLUE : I'm doing Merchant Alliance voyage
LEGENDARY : I'm doing Legendary voyage
BLACK : I'm doing Fort
SHARK : I'm doing/helping with Merrick quest OR fishing/hunting shark
CHECHERED : I want friendly interact with other crew (drinking, playing music, chalenging others crew, racing or something else)
JOLLY ROGER : Dont be in my line of sight or you gonna be my next victim !!!@ev0-charizard I actually have met a lot of players who use this meanings (5 galleons till now):
White: not attacking unless attacked
Checkered: We are doing fast missions that have time rewuirement (Merchant's)
Black: neutral, they attack based on their needs (if they feel like it)
Yellow: Warning, get to close and you will be attacked and boarded.
Red: HOSTILE AF
Skull: Fort seekers@zyrkal Nope, black means like you said "misterious behaviour", and yellow is "won't attack unless you dare come closer to us". And yes, sorry, blue means "will never attack". This is something our crew discussed with abour other five crews, and they liked it, I'm not saying this as a statement though. the devs should actually make those statements clear and loud.
@Carlosylu
I never said black = misterious. For me black = fort.
So white and blue are the same now with a little difference... And why not the white one to be pur peace ??
Your system make the flag too close in their meaning.I think Rare should never "officialy" give a flag signification because there is people who want use them for fun, beauty and don't want to be stuck with a specific one.
@zyrkal But they could do custimizables and also stablished color meanings, that'd solve the problem right?
@Carlosylu
Without adding anything in the game for RARE, it's easy to give and "official" meaning for some with my system:NOTHING : I just spawn
OR I'm shoping OR I want to be sneaky
WHITE : I'm peaceful
YELLOW : I'm doing Gold Hoarder voyage
RED : I'm doing Order of Soul voyage
BLUE : I'm doing Merchant Alliance voyage
LEGENDARY : I'm doing Legendary voyage
BLACK : I'm doing Fort
SHARK : I'm doing/helping with Merrick questOR fishing/hunting shark
CHECHERED : I want friendly interact with other crew (drinking, playing music, chalenging others crew, racing or something else)
JOLLY ROGER : Dont be in my line of sight or you gonna be my next victim !!!@zyrkal I'd love that the red one meant hostyle, you know? like the real black beard? He used the red flag to say "there will be no mercy, nor survivors"
I don't really want them to have meanings. Maybe other than the white flag and potentially the jolly roger though I'm not happy labeling the jolly roger as if you are playing this game and like pirates then you will want to use it regardless of pvp stance.
I want to just use whatever flag I want to. I like blue so I will most likely use the blue one but that won't mean anything. I don't really want this hardcore labeling to stick so then people start yelling at me for using the wrong flag...
@carlosylu Yea I understand and a lot of people want : red = blood and skull = give me your loot.
The problem with that it's : nothing really happen if you die in the game, so people WILL always fight back to proteck the loot.
@zyrkal
And again. Yes exactly as you say... I dont have to use it... So what does your system that you decide on REALLY tell you if you have no idea who is using your system....I mean look at it ^^^^^^^^
You can't even get 5 ppl to agree on 1 thing in the forum...
Much less thousands of players on the waters that dont take part in discussions...
This goes nowhere until god (rare) says it does..... And even then i probably wouldnt follow the outline.last thing i want is for someone to know what mission types I am doing..lol That's just asking to get attacked and your loot taken. I would like to see them make the flags larger at the top if not at least leverage the flag pole off the back of the galleon to fly a larger one. There was a great post done by someone on how the flag system could be implemented. But I haven't been able to find it yet.
Mostly I do believe that's just flags without meaning..
But giving it meaning. The most known:
White means surrender, not willing to fight
Jolly Rogers Intend in boarding and just robbing the items others possess (without intention to kill anyone if it's possible)
Red means no mercy. I'll just kill you rather you like it or not.
White and black in other matters means: as a lifeguard that kind of flag is to let others know when the beach is temporarily without vigilance. Could be used to let others know you just temporarily AFK.. or are just getting resources...
It could also intend to race purpose... Since is a think Devs think players are doing.. ( at least we have an achievement for that....).Blue Could mean merchant, since the colours match the alliance colours. So someone will know in advance what you mainly carrying. And won't bother to fight you for a couple of unworthy chickens...
Black as it says mysterious may mean not previous intention on PvP, but if others engage they'll be prepared to.
Yellow may mean social interaction, like trying an alliance with other ships or just trading purpose.
The legendary and shark can be chained to their activities or just to show off..
As much as we would like for the flags to actually mean something in some way - they mean nothing because everyone has a completely different interpretation. Even something as simple as the white flag. Some say its "I'm peaceful"....while other say "I surrender". Two completely different things. Purely cosmetic.
I say, just use any flag you like..... :-)@ev0-charizard i know that pirates used 2 colors on the flags, black with skull was a way telling the ships that they will come on board and loot you, red flag meant to loot and kill you all on the ship no one would live to tell the tail when the red flag was used.other colors idk
I am doing the above, and think that a poll with the above ideas is a great step forward.
Player interaction is one of the biggest concerns for people beside content, and the hungering deep helps with that somewhat. However, by adding flags Rare has given the community the chance to make the flags what we want them to be. Giving them a community agreed meaning is awesome!
Yes, some are still going to ignore the flags in favour of piracy or trolling, but that doesn't mean the community can't make something for the flags that are a blank canvass for us all who want some more interaction with others.
Im looking forward to sailing and seeing the flags and using the horn to communicate. Any good Captain and crew know to keep vigilant regardless of flag, sailing or what people say, but it gives the chance for more community interaction
For me:
White and black\white doted flags - not using them at all
Red/Roger - searching for PVP
Black - grumpy, i'm not in mood but will sink you if you come closer
Yellow - farming gold and don't want pvp
Blue - farming gold and will play as a Navy ship, help others and sunk any pirate with Roger/Red flag@shuoink i fly a blue flag to signify im a friendly. If you sail up and say "hey i noticed your blue flag, we are friendly too" i give you free s**t. Chests skulls.. you be nice to me i be nice to you.. so if you see full ceremonial admiral paint with Nayfe Pacewell as captain come say hey. Get free s**t ;)
If we want to get historical about it, pirates commonly used three flags: The Jolly Roger, the plain black flag, and the red flag.
Usually a pirate vessel would fly false colors until it was bearing down upon its prey, at which time it would hoist the Jolly Roger, often accompanied by a warning shot.
The most famous pirate flag was the Jolly Roger, or skull and crossbones. There were several variations of this flag, but its meaning was clear: "We are going to board you and take your cargo. If you surrender and do not resist, we might not kill you." Quarter was given under this flag, as long as there was no resistance.
The plain black flag was also sometimes used, and meant the same thing as the Jolly Roger.
A red flag was different. If a vessel resisted, the black flag would be replaced with a red flag, which meant: "You will receive no quarter. You will be killed and your vessel sunk. Have a nice day."
Okay, I may have ad-libbed a bit, but that's the gist of it.
The white flag is widely understood to mean surrender, or "we want to talk". I haven't found any specific references of the flag used this way by 18th century vessels, however. The flag has had a number of different meanings over the centuries. It certainly could be used to indicate surrender or peace, especially if raised during battle. But it's not a foregone conclusion.
The rest of the flags are pretty much open to interpretation.
Keeping the meaning I said earlyer for all falgs, the Rainbow flag will represente for me doing BilgRat voyages.
Because there is Orange on it (like the bilgrat companie) and DUKE give us various things to do every 2 weeks and it can be completely different each time. But if RARE add an orange flag THIS will become my BilgRat flag.
@elentar said in WHAT THE FLAGS MEAN:
Red = Willing to work together (fort, etc), want allies
A red flag, historically, always meant "you will be given no quarter, prepare to die. Do not fault us for honoring surrender, for surrender is not an option."
