What types of islands would you like to see in the upcoming DLC?

  • My idea of this thread is to pull together some ideas for Rare off different variations of islands you would like to see added in the third content drop coming out in a few months.

I cant remember what the expansion is called but it was announced that the third content drop will expand the map to a new biome.

I personally would like to see:

A cave system- *It would start with a small sandbank with one big rock in the centre with an opening. As you enter you have a multi leveled dark cave system with lots of hidden areas and underground rivers and maybe crystal formations. I would like it to be pretty dark so you have to utilise the lamp and can get lost through the tunnels. Preferably with some loot scattered around to reward exploration.

Pirate Lords graveyard- *For this island in would like to see some great monuments carved out of trees and stone of some of the pirates and characters from the lore and history of SoT. Maybe add some paintings detailing stories of the adventurers who managed to make there mark in the world.

Great ship battle "island"- For this area I would like to see a part of the map that has little to no landmass instead an area built up from the remains of a great battle of Galleons, Sloops and Man o Wars. I think it would be really unique and add quite a nice spin on the area.

Underwater cave system- Lastly I was thinking of when I played Assassins creed and they had these expansive underwater caves where you could swim through with little air pockets here and there to replenish your oxygen, I would love to see a Rare spin on these. Especially with the amazing jobs the art team do making the world beautiful.

That's just a few of the top of my head, ill add more as I think of them. What would types would you guys like to see implemented? :)

  • I'd love to see an "island" that randomly appears in the Outskirts of the current map, pushing back the Devil's Shroud for the duration of its appearance.
Ideally the "island" would turn out to be an ancient giant Turtle or so, overgrown with Fauna, explaining why an island can seemingly move around the World.

Once the ancient creature decides to depart again you better hurry heading back to the regular playable area before the Devil's Shroud consumes your ship.

  • @knifelife One idea that I have seen is volcanic islands. You could have lava flows and vision obscuring ash clouds that make the island a bit dangerous.

Going with the graveyard idea, I would like to see some islands that appear genuinely cursed. Vegetation more blasted than the Wilds, more dark, oppressive, threatening, that sort of thing. Order of Souls missions imply that crews can be cursed, so why not islands/regions?

Storm Island. This island has a perpetual storm centered on it. To safely explore it, you have to dock your ship into one of the coves or caves to prevent it from sinking. Then you have to deal with the lightning strikes and low visibility.

    Just a few ideas.

  • @thor-von-blitz That would be epic! I really like the idea of it popping up an submerging at different times. Maybe they could have a unique chest on it or something like a stronghold chest where you have to solve a puzzle to get it before the time runs out and it submerges back to the depths. :)

  • Cool concepts mate, though a few of them already exist in some form in game.

I believe there's already a sizeable graveyard on Wanderer's Refuge, with several notable graves that sometimes figure into riddle voyages. These are scattered around on several islands actually, but the one on Wanderer's stands out due to its size for me.
And of course the world is already littered with Easter Eggs devoted to pirates who've made their mark.

We already have shipwrecks in game, and of course, Shipwreck Bay, but an area without any landmass sounds somewhat interesting.

There's not any super expansive cave systems in game yet, but there's a few notable hidden underwater caves, unmarked on any map, and personally the caves on Sailor's Bounty's taken me for a spin more than once.
I do like the idea of crystals though, could figure into the Order of Souls mystique, or the Merchant's resource gathering.

Solid ideas mate, but I think you can do even better and get far more creative with your suggestions. Remember, this DLC is a ways out, so the developers have more time to consider all your ideas.

  • River island. Lemme sloop them galleons. Draxx. Them. Sklounst.

Yes! How didn't I think of lava islands! They could do it like solstheim (Murdered that spelling) from the skyrim dlc with ash falling over the place! Brilliant idea hopefully they add some.

Also love the idea of the storms, maybe they could be mixed in with the cursed islands you mentioned. I think they would be a good addition especially with the eary groans and background noises we already have in game. :)

  • @tundra-793 They where just quick things of the top of my head, ill be sure to add to them and maybe find some pictures. What do you think could be done to make them more unique? :)

@Gloog That would actually add a really interesting spin on ship combat and player combat overal if you could sail through the islands and had some open water in and around them. Maybe they could add some smaller rivers where only sloops can go through as a way you could loose pursuers.

Sorry for the multiple post replies, im on a tablet so cannot easily reply to everyone in one comment. :)

  • @knifelife
Definitely volcanic islands like @Program-024 mentioned.

Another one would be more like Pacific islands where the island is covered with bamboo and bonsai looking trees. They would have sort of an Asian or Polynesian look.

I would also want there to be islands that have ruins on them. Kind of like Mayan ruins, and not sunken on the bottom of the ocean like most the ruins are now.

The last would be like some of the concept art they have shown. Sort of like "Extreme Pirate" islands with skull mountains and really overgrown and intense forests...if that makes any sense.

  • @shibby-544 You actually make a good point about Mayan ruins, im suprised we don't actually have any tribal islands or ruins with inhabitants what settled who are not apart of the trading companies or colonisation of the game world. I think that would be a great addition and add alot of lore oppertunities as well.

  • @knifelife You want caves? Toss in cave dwelling monsters and those crystals you mentioned. Make it both perilous and rewarding.

Pirate graveyards? Toss in some ghosts, both evil and friendly. Maybe fallen pirates sharing tales of their demise, others wanting revenge on the living.

I got nothin' on the idea for ship battle areas. Maybe expand the shipwreck mechanic?

Underwater caves likewise, while they exist, can become much more engaging with a few tweaks like NPCs or enemies, or lorebooks.

Just some addendums off the top of my head, but keep mulling your ideas over mate, it's alright to go a little wild with these concepts :)

  • @knifelife said in

... a small sandbank with one bug rock ....

    Nailed it. lol sorry.
But yes, any inclusions without bugs would be a welcomed change.

Any island that is solid, meaning it's cliff face(s) that I can't fall behind (again) and rocks / boulders that skeletons can't shoot through.

You do have some great ideas there.

  • @admiral-rrrsole Panama was that Rares autocorrect or mine messing with me xD

  • I'd like for them to give a reason to stay on islands. Many islands are huge and detailed, but you never get any player interaction on them, because there's no reason to stay. Fighting over loot or something on the actual island, would be great.

  • @knifelife lol Sorry to be the bug in your ointment.
I am often quoted before I see my typos or other errors.

  • @admiral-rrrsole No worries it made it laugh! Also on a side note you Gamer tag just clicked in my head and I almost choked on my drink l***o! Well played sir, well played!

  • @knifelife
Yeah, a lot of islands have some evidence of ancient inhabitants, but really no sign of early civilization. Some of the islands have worn down camps, but there's now way they would expect that to satisfy the ancient civilization element.

  • @knifelife Cheers my good man. It usually takes people a while for the gold coin to finally drop so I get that response a lot. lol :o)

  • An island that appears at random, accessed by sailing through a dense fog. Dangerous to approach, and has a cave system/large temple with puzzles and enemy AI.

  • The types there is something to do beside , digging chest and killing skelly waves that requires to be kill with cannon most of the time due to our limited amo and outrageous placements ...

Like an island where PVP are encouraged and where there is goals

  • I really like the idea of a volcanic island. It's an island type not yet represented in the game and it would create the opportunity to add some verticality to the game.

  • @knifelife Skull island, enough said.

  • I would like to see Urban islands, somewhat like Venice, with canals and alleys, and crooks and crannies, a place where you can gamble. I think it would be dope.

  • Although it has been mentioned before some time ago, b o o b y-traps. And no, I don't mean bras. :o)

Indiana Jones type cave systems with riddles inscribed in them that lead to treasures. Although the actual workings of the cave would not be able to change the riddles could be randomly generated to lead to different loot locations.

Thinking more about it, the cave traps could easily be changed randomly.
Back in the day mapping for Quake 3 engine based games we would use script objects to spawn / appear when triggered or perform differently with a scripted random generator.
I know that this game uses the U4 engine but surely after more than 15 years since the Q3 engine such things can still be generated.

  • Technically we already have a volcano in the game....Old Salt Atoll.

Atoll - An atoll, sometimes called a coral atoll, is a ring-shaped coral reef including a coral rim that encircles a lagoon partially or completely. There may be coral islands/cays on the rim. The coral of the atoll often sits atop the rim of an extinct seamount or volcano which has eroded or subsided partially beneath the water.

  • @pasha-entreri I guess I'll have to do a quick dive to see if the geology there is accurate

  • Some great ideas!
I would love to see secret/random islands that may only appear at certain times like maybe at night or if triggered somehow by playing music while in that area.

  • This is a good thread. We need more like this one.
I like all of these ideas so far. Seeing any of these come to life would be epic

  • @nwo-azcrack Your right, i hope we get some of them in game at some point they are epic.

And its a nice change to have a thread of ideas instead of back and forths lol. Lets see if it can last.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Accidently summoned the kraken xD

  • @stacky-a said

Sweet. Consider yourself a part of the awesome ideas list.
You, my fair lady, have opened a whole new perspective to activating random events in random places. With the use of emotes which also open our eyes to other possibilities such as firing a cannon or adjusting sails at a random grid location of the map at a random time (almost anything in the current game) could trigger events such as giant mythical or even prehistoric creatures emerging on either land or sea, an underwater volcano erupts to form an island right before your eyes.

The possibilities are endless and only limited by the lack of imagination.

  • Another idea. This one is inspired by actual locations in the world.

    Blue Holes.

Blue Holes are sink holes that get filled up by the ocean. So what you have is some shallows surrounding a sudden deep spot. Compared to the turquoise waters of the surrounding reefs and shallows, you get a deep blue spot. Hence the name Blue Hole.

These would be very deep with caves branching off to the sides. Just don't stay for too long though. You might get lost down there. Or vengeful spirits of others who have attempted to explore them may not be keen on living interlopers. But perhaps you can put rest to the legends of dumped and stashed treasures hidden in the dark depths...

  • @stacky-a That would be epic! Reminds me of the moon runes from the hobbit!

  • @knifelife Yeh, I think from memory there was mention of an Island in the lore book that only appeared at night or in moonlight (cant quite remember, I will have to re-read to check).

  • @knifelife @stacky-a

Random islands would fit well with the lore too, in the book it talks about 'breaking free of the Devil's Shroud', so within that murky border area might be some islands which temporarily break free and appear for us and then are sucked back into it perhaps?
