Peaceful Servers: A Temporary/Permanent Solution

  • I have played Sea of Thieves for many hours since release, and have made many new friends and crewmates along the way. However, I have also encountered many griefers and cheaters as well. Although I can see that Rare is taking steps to reduce griefing, cheating remains unregulated and unpunished.

In addition, in a game that puts an emphasis on PvP interactions over PvE (an unnaturally large one, in my opinion), I find, as well as other players, that sometimes players may want to avoid conflict and stick to completing bounties to level up their factions and reduce the risk of being set back in the event of being attacked. This is almost not possible and extremely difficult to achieve currently, as the amount of griefers present in the game currently is extremely high. Although still a minority, the odds of matching a crew with the sole intention of ruining your day (and not even going for loot) is frustratingly high. To combat these issues, I am proposing a solution that, theoretically, will require little effort from Rare and could be implemented quickly: peaceful servers. Here's how I see this working.

When you first log into the game and cue up for a lobby/make a lobby, you will be given the option of selecting a peaceful server or normal server. The peaceful server would be identical to your typical SoT server, except your crew will be alone. You will be free to roam the world as you wish without the fear of being griefed or attacked.

A peaceful server, under this definition, may seem boring for many, and I understand. That is why I am proposing this as an opt-in experience. I had the opportuntiy of playing on a 'dead server' a few nights ago. Nobody else spawned into our world after the last galleon left, and we were alone for 6+ hours. Although this may seem boring, I can say that the time I spent during that time grinding was the most fun I had had on this game. I also got the most done during this time, completed many more voyages and completed a skull fort without interference. For the first time since release, I could focus on the game and take in my surroundings and connect with my crew. I want to have this experience again in the future. Peaceful servers for me, at least until Rare implements working anti-cheat systems, anti-griefing systems, and re-evaluates server population density caps, is something I would be looking for in order for me to continue playing this game in the long term. Sea of Thieves has a lot of growth and progress left to be made upon, and this would be a major improvement/feature that could only benefit this game.

    What do you think, readers?

EDIT: This blew up way more than I thought it would lol. I would like to thank Rare for commenting under this feed and clarifying some things for me. To those who say this issue was stated before, I apologize, I did not know this was already a discussion, I am new to these forums. Whether you agree or disagree with me, thank you for your responses, they have greatly helped me understand the community and game more :)

  • @personalc0ffee Didn't know that was stated. Can you tell me where I can find where he said that?

  • Seems like a very poor idea that goes against the spirit of the game.

  • @a-dry-noodle The biggest fun I had was taking a raid alone or roaming the world while sloops drove by me without shootings. Pure bliss and relaxing. PvP is okay but some PvE mode aww yiss pls for when you want to chill out, it's a great game for that,

  • but turning a pvp based game into a pve ruins the game.. zero fun.. thats like playing a zombie survival game where the zombies dont attack you.. pointless..

  • @a-dry-noodle Seriously can't believe you people are still making these posts.

@a-dry-noodle Seriously can't believe you people are still making these posts.

Because a HUGE part of the player base wants this....

Regardless of what anyone says... the start of this post is exactly how I would want to play the game if I could choose to do so.

  • This is yet again the same topic but with a different label...

  • @willowmnstrrawr
Its not a huge part of the player base. Its a small portion who dont understand the spirit of the game. Some ppl want this game to be something its not. Its called Sea of Thieves for a reason.

  • @a-dry-noodle

The problem is that your idea will be shouted down by the vocal pvp minority. I don't get devs on games like this, because it's been proven game after game that pve servers always do better than pvp servers in games where it's offered.

The game would be far more profitable if it put pve servers in and added real story content.

Why would pvp players even care? If people that don't want to pvp play on a different server, why care? We all know why.

My biggest problem is that there are no private server rooms or any other way for my friends and I to do battle against each other. Instead we are forced to play with people we don't know (outside co-op on one ship) and don't want to play with.

This game is lacking too much. I actually fear that the devs may think the severe playerbase drop since launch is only due to that. I fear they won't credit the griefing nature of the pvp in this game as part of it.

I am a ps4 player and 12 of us bought the pc game so we could pirate with friends. What we found instead is a boring grind and lackluster forced pvp in neverending simplistic death matches against players we don't know, with no way to play with each other instead.

Never played a severely limited mp game like this before.

That's why I am quitting anyway. Of the 12 of us, none are left. We are all playin FC5 co-opping story missions. Arghhhh.

  • @fuelie
No one is forcing you to do anything. You knew what the game was before you played it. Pve servers are not happening anyway

  • @nwo-azcrack

I think the amount of posts and topics centered around this dictate otherwise.

It’s all good though... luckily the game is still in early stages and I think anything is still possible. Joys of this type of game, as the community base asks for things the devs can build it.

Too many ppl out there that would play pve servers for them not to seriously consider it.

  • @willowmnstrrawr
But they are not concidering it. Its already been confirmed it wont happen. Its defeats the entire point of the game. Like i have said before, ppl want this game to be something its not. Rare will make the right call. Its called sea of thieves. Not sea of peace

  • I don’t get it.... seriously why the hell is it so hard to reach commen ground here? Everyone is either pvp or pve, it WAS NEVER STATED the game was strictly either or.... if people don’t want fight ALL of the time fine, and what is so bad about separate servers?!? All the pvp people can go fight each other in there own world while pve player can play in peace! The only reason I don’t see it working is pvp players only wanna kill pve players...

  • @cpt-james-stone
Because it defeats the point of the entire game. It splits the community. And how fair is it gonna be when you guys lvl your faction with no threat while the rest of us fought tooth and nail for our castaway chest?

  • If PvE servers ever happen, I'm demanding a full refund for this game because the devs would be going against something they explicitly promised long before the game was even released.

It's not happening. Stop with these threads. At least post in one of the dozens of other threads about this exact thing.

  • My advice to anyone is to only play in a 4 man crew. Most of the problems that people whine about like safe zones, spawn killing and PvE servers will become a non issue if you got a crew that helps you out.

  • @cpt-james-stone you're absolutely right. It was never stated that it was one or the other, so why would they split the servers up into one or the other? It's supposed to be ALL aspects of the game at ALL times. The unpredictability is what this game is about.

  • Why does the pvp crowd even care? They just go on pvp servers easy. People who defend this so heavily want easy targets. I just read that some one was attacking and cursing at a mother and her child who played the game.

Yes you can mute all you want, be alerted all the time, look around, go to another outpost but...why the hell do I have to because of toxic players and what you would call in other games "griefers"?

I don't mind the pvp aspect of the game, but this is a KOS simulator and it's just boring. Taking 3h for a raid because everyone just sinks one after another? I did that för half an hour and was shaking my head how that can be fun to someone for a measly 15k. I just switch server and go on my merry way.

The only thing good right now about raids: I can get some stuff done. But having to watch my back all the time is getting on my nerves. I just want to sail around. Give me some npc ships or something and then it's done. Game is rated 12+ here in Germany but the community makes it a 18+ game...

  • I would support this. I know people are against it but nobody is forcing you into it.

  • It's not in their vision for pve only and the game isn't made to support either pvp or pve alone. It needs both to be fun.

As for cheaters, they have stated in the last announcement that they are working on it. As they would be.

  • If people want a PvE only server fine.....but you don't get any rep and can never be a pirate legend. You get gold for cosmetics but that's it!

    No risk No reward!!

There is no such thing as a PvP only player. There is no reward for that and there never should be. You get lucky sometimes and get loot out of it but most times people will just sail away.

  • @PersonalC0ffee The horse got obliterated into atoms months ago, now they are beating there way to the centre of earth, maybe the universe itself.

  • I am a new pirate in these tormented waters but I have two opposite experiences with the game. One I deeply loved, one I just hated so much.

The first day I downloaded the game, I was all alone in the islands, or well, I didn't crossed paths with anyone. It was a great adventure, boarding my little ship, exploring, finding treasures, since I knew I could meet other pirates, I had also that fear of being killed and all, and sure, it is part of the experience.

The day after was a completely different experience. It started pretty great, I had meet my first colleague, a "high-level" pirate with a beautiful ship, pretty clothes and a legendary title. I was really stressed since he was following me but in fact, it was cool, we did some things together, we were dancing and performing music. But then... a moment later, after we parted ways, I fall upon a ship of other pirates. I was just doing some shopping on the island and they attacked my ship. Then they set foot on the island and killed me. After that, it had been seven times I respawned and got killed again. It's just horrible.

I know we are in the theme of the pirates, that it's PvP and all but I don't understand that you can't be safe on the outposts. It should be a place where the code of pirates cant be violated. You shouldnt be able to kill someone seven times in a row in the same place. How can someone can just play then ? It's a nonsense.

Rare has to do something and as quickly as possible. I could play hundreds of hours at this game but if I can't do anything when I fall upon those kind of players, I will just quit.

  • @badkahr makes no sense..there still will be pvp? People can just opt out from it, nothing will change at all?

Prepare yourself from getting called to "git gud" or "you aren't pirate enough". Toxic players ruin the game and wan't to make it their game. Just yesterday I read some post on reddit where someone made a mom and their kid cry. Yeah......

  • @willowmnstrrawr Not at all, simply a very vocal minority who won't take no for an answer. Even though Rare has said no themselves. Stop being so entitled and trying to change their vision because you're not able to handle the game as is when thousands of us already figured it out.

  • This again... It's nice to see that some things never change :)

In this game, one of the most pointless argument is "no risk, no reward" from pro-pvp side. Where the heck is the risk when you take an empty ship straight from the spawn point and go seal clubbing a solo sloop, incase there's treasure in it?

Also, why should we be worried if others want to go to PVE/Solo mode?
I would think it's more exciting to know that when you meet a ship, they're ready for a fight instead fleeing to protect their cargo. And maybe they're even better than you. Chance to hone your PVP skills even more.
Think about the excitement in "PVP server", every single ship is out to get you! Just the way you want it.

Worried that others might get levels in PVE/Solo mode and become a legend before you? well, the option would be open for you aswell.

Either way, I like the game as it is now. But if people want to go for no human interaction mode.. Let them.

  • @therealdadbeard
This is where u are wrong. Having a pve only server would divide the community. It is called sea of thieves. Not peaceful sailor simulator

  • People need to stop trying to make a PVP game into a PVE game. Learn to use your spyglass and never let anyone close.

The toxic people are the ones who are trying to shame PVP players for PVPing in a PVP game.

I go for hours on end without ever seeing another ship as is. I don't get how you all seem to be attacked "constantly".

  • @blg-strong-dad I didn't realize others had made this post. I'm not a frequent reader here

  • @trickrtreat01 I wish I had your luck lol. And I would argue that this game is split evenly between pvp and pve by concept. Definitely not tryign to kill pvp, just provide more options for players, even if it is a minority.

  • @nwo-azcrack Dunno how it would 'divide' per say, I honestly think most people would stay on normal servers. Just proposing an option that I believe a minority would enjoy

  • Translation: Free grind and then transfer to PvP server to focus on killing.

  • @fuelie You don't get it because contrary to popular belief game development is an art form and not just a business idea that exists purely for profit.
It would be like asking an expressionist to paint realism, just because more people will like it.

The developers have a vision for their game, and it does not include a PvE only experience.
