Let's talk about Lanters.

  • They serve no purpose other than to allow ships to see you easier, for the new or un seasoned player, they are a curse, for the experienced player, they are an "auto switch off".

They do nothing, they don't help you at night in the slightest.

Can we change this? Can we make lanterns a risk v reward type scenario? If not, can we default them in the game settings, so I don't have to tediously turn them off every single time I play.

How about increasing their light range by 10 fold, so we can use them to stun night skeles, or actually give the illusion that they are being useful at night, cause let's be honest you don't need them.

Lanterns can be used for long range communication.

Turning them off means: "I'am dangerous stay away"
Turning them on means: I'am friendly"
Rapidly blinking means "I don't want to fight"

Eh, maybe in your version of Sea of thieves. In mine its -

Lanterns on - I am a noob, or I am looking for a fight
Lanterns off - I know lanterns are stupid, this will make me slightly less obvious to spot in the distance
Lanterns rapidly blinking - I am hoping this works, but really I am just creating an even MORE obvious method of being spotted by everyone in range to come and kill me.

  • @gianni001
Oh well, that's just a negative version of the unofficial lantern codes we all used in alpha and beta.
If you don't want to use them nobody will force you.
But I think you misunderstood the blinking. If you blink someone already has noticed you and is sailing towards you, so you blink to show your intentions.

  • @gianni001 I was kinda sad about how they currently work. While it makes sense from a realistic standpoint I hate HAVING to turn them out if I don't want to be seen from literally across the entire world since they're really aesthetically pleasing.

  • I actually like lantern tactics. Though, I think you forgot one: oops I scuttled my ship and in my hurry to leave forgot to turn them off. LOL. In any case, the risk/reward is interesting. I actually had a thought that turning off your lanterns at night should increase the likelihood the Kraken or some other creature will attack your boat. Like the lantern was used to keep certain creatures at bay. This would allow for more risk if you decide to hide from other players this way.

  • @gianni001 I personally love the lanterns! I fiddle with them all the time while our ship is in cruise control. I even ask my mates to vote me in the brig so I can switch the one off that's in there. In SoT, trouble will always find you sooner or later so...
    what lanterns mean to me:

Lanterns on: Yay I can see better! #HDRproblems

    Lanterns off:
    a) it's just me, the sea, me ship, me mates and the beautiful Rare-generated night. Arr the feels!
    b) time for some nostalgic quests using only yer blue OoS Lattern when needed. Arr the feels!

Rapidly blinking: Hit the tunes lets party! Arr the feels!

  • @gianni001 When did kaboose start playing SOT? Go back to halo 1!

  • Rapidly blinking means "I don't want to fight"

Ahh, and I thought they were saying naughty things via Morse code, so we sank them. oooops.

  • Like most of Sea of thieves, lanterns are badly designed. The light travels about 3 metres, then becomes darkness. This makes no sense, is not realistic within the game world and serves no good purpose in practice.

They need to alter the range, as you say, tenfold. They also need to increase the range of the bell for the same reason. The ship's bell serves no purpose because it' can't be heard more than roughly 40 metres away.

What I really think should be added is a weather cycle where in the winter fog or mist covers the sea, and the lanters light up rocks and other features that might endanger the ship. You can tur them off, but seeing obstacles through the mist in the night should then be near impossible. Risk and reward, as you say.

I actually wish they did this with grog and shanties too. Grog offering a slight damage resistance and shanties offering a radial buff to speed. I'd love to see more combat involving grog and shanties.

  • @gianni001 l**o. 😂😂😂

Hear hear! This is how I did it then and I still do now.

Too bad that the waters be more hostile now than in the alpha.

    Cheers!

  • Have them stun shadows please that’d be great.

  • I like the idea of larger lighting radius that could potentially be used to support beach-side combat with shadow skellies.

That being said, here's some current uses for lanterns on ships.

    • Leaving them on tells most people you're not looking for a fight. Whether one finds you or not is up to debate, but it's a clear signal you're not looking for PvP right now (or you're new in which case it's the same result)

    • Lanterns Off means I probably know what I'm doing and if I'm heading your way prepare for a fight.

    • Communication: for those that know morse code you can actually have real messages relayed this way.

    • You can change your lighting configuration to throw off other ships. If you're a galleon, you can change the lights on/off to look more like a sloop at night and if you're a sloop you can change your lights to make it harder to tell if you're coming or going.

  • I rapidly flash my lanterns when being chased as a way to say "Haha, you can't catch me"

  • I just wish they served their intended purpose.

A lantern is designed to provide light, where light is required , ie, when it's dark and you need to see.

Sea of Thieves is never dark enough to need the lanterns, thus their in-game purpose is moot, hence why folks are using them for other purposes, which is not by design.

It's clear that the dev's intended the lanterns being ON provides a more obvious method of being spotted, but it seems that is literally it, hence my argument.

Maybe if there were darker nights where lanterns actually were needed, dark enough so you couldnt see your compass / map, so you NEED to turn them on at night.

Risk vs Reward - Navigate at night? Turn on your lanterns, if even periodically to check your bearing. Or, take it easy during the night with lanterns off.

Anyways, there is much more pressing issues in this game, I can let this slide, it just annoys me.
