I Sank My First Ship!

  • So, I've been playing solo for 90% of my time since I started playing the beta back in December. I'd estimate about 20-30 hours in this game already. I've been sunk, boarded, and robbed many times but today...that all changed!

For the first time, I attacked a ship, sunk it, killed the crew, gathered their booty, and cashed it in. Sure, it was a crew of two, but I did it! I actually became the pirate instead of the little sloop running away from every other ship on the horizon. For months now, I've been either running from a fight or losing one. I have always been that solo player that galleon crews laugh about while turning in my hard earned gold. It sucked, but today I felt a change take place. Every defeat came into play as I swooped in and unloaded cannonball after cannonball into their unsuspecting hull. For the entire time I was making decisions based on past experience, and when I ran my sword through the last sailor, I had to take a minute because I was in shock. I couldn't believe it!

Now, I'm aware that the amount of time it took me to reach this milestone is, well, unimpressive. But what I want to point out is the accomplishment I felt from finally becoming the victor. This game has been crushing my soul from day one and I finally feel like my effort is paying off.

I guess, my point is, don't give up on this game. There is a lot of hate going around for it, and I get where it is coming from, but I think a lot has to do with people expecting something different. We all thought this game was going to be more like the pine cone wars we got into at scout camp. Silly, fun, and without anyone getting hurt. In reality, it's more like a serious paintball match. No mercy, no trust, and lots of hurt feelings. I'm not saying this game can't be fun, it really can be, but it isn't all like that. That fact that the world is filled with real players who have no reason to not crush you, makes it a kill or be killed kind of world where the only people you can trust are your crewmates. It really isn't like the goofy videos we all watched last summer. This game is a challenge!

I'm still really bad. The truth of the matter is the crew was diving around a shipwreck and couldn't get to their boat in time. But, I bet they learned the value of keeping a lookout as I sailed away with their 5 skulls. I won't lie though, I was smiling for the rest of the day. It felt so good! I've never had an experience like that in a video game before and it was incredible. But it was incredible because it took me so long to get it.

In short, let's give this game a chance, guys. There is so much potential here. Yes, we need more content, but if they can do that, this will be a game that I'll be playing with my grandchildren.

    Cheers!

  • Congratz... Don't stop there though! Keep sinking until you hit a jackpot. Out of the 13 ships I sunk last night only 3 had significant loot. Worth it? Hell yes! What is a legendary pirate if they don't steal loot

  • Hahah great, on the flipside there is another post on a forum somewhere out there with the salty title "OMFG sunk while exploring a wreck, this game s*x, lost 5 skullz, never playing again".
More fool them for diving when there's a sail on the horizon.
Well done chap, THIS is horizontal progression.

  • @hex-ten Haha! I had that thought too. Five skulls is a lot so I felt kind of bad...kind of.

  • Good job (:

glad to hear you found your sea legs

  • Sea of Thieves is a game of blank pages.
You create a story with every adventure.

Your past stories have been of defeat and hardship, despair and loss.
But you persevered through those days, and wrote a story of triumph and prowess. Of stealth and swordplay.
You wrote a story of Victory and Glory.

Most importantly though, you learned from your previous stories to make this one true. You knew where and when to strike to achieve that victory, and much more impressively, you did it alone.

Don't feel bad for the story of those who lost. You earnt this victory more than most, and if those players are smart. Their next story, will involve checking the horizon, before diving.

  • This really made me smile. I've been reading (and posting) a lot about the core game design and how it could be better, what works, what still needs fixing, and what could be added. My mind's been running non-stop and I've felt very tired from doing so, and this post is very genuinely refreshing for me. Congratulations, good sir and/or madam! I am very happy for you! I look forward to hearing more tales of you and your adventures!

  • @salixstorm That be what's up, mate! Let me know if you need some pirates to help your in your journeys.

  • The best moment in the game as a solo sloop driver is that first time you see another ship on the horizon and feel no fear. Come about, 4 sheets to the wind, and make your heading an intercept course!

First, congrats to you, OP. It might feel dirty but remember that morals are a social construct, and that guilt that you feel is a result of generations of good/evil brainwashing. I'd be salty if it happened to me, but at the same time I'd never be unaware of my surroundings for the amount of time it takes for a ship to approach in this game. Knowing that the only reason for that habit is the fact that I've been in positions analogous to the divers, I'd say you've done them a solid. The naïve beg to be used by the cunning, hardship builds character, you can't understand anything unless you've experienced it, and any organism is just an agent of karma. Well done. The only thing that could have made this more proper is to shout to them: "This is why you always keep a lookout! Have a nice day!"

I saw a galleon chasing a lone sloop earlier so I assisted the sloop. It really was some of the most fun I've had in the game yet. The sloop was smart enough to turn toward me so I fell in behind them and hit a few shots then cannoned over while my ship in a turn behind them. I dropped their anchor immediately and was sitting under their deck, saying bullying is bad mmkay and whispering creepily like a phone sexer "i'm eating your bananas" and then shooting them when they came down to check the bananas, and pestering the survivors when they tried to raise anchor after deciding to leave me down there. I actually did eat about 45 bananas while at full health, but not standing at the barrel like an idiot.

I had my ship in a 5 peg turn at halfish sail behind them so it was good, just making circles slightly away from them to the rear, but they managed to somehow get cannons on the dude I was trying to help although I dropped their anchor. I fully expected him to flee. They got 4 skulls from him, and in the end I grabbed the villainous and jumped off board and left it at the mermaid. I think they retrieved the skull because they kept the anchor down for a while and just repaired the damage I was dealing to them.

I stalked them to the nearby outpost and again put the wheel on a course away from them as I planned to disengage after this, cannoned over to climb onto their deck, grabbed a hateful skull and sold it to the vendor, then ran and climbed back onto their ship. There was no more treasure so I fired their cannon balls at nothing. I killed some as they came aboard and they ended up killing me, too.

One who was on the ferry with me whined: "what do you want from us, why don't you just leave us alone", as if they could possibly be victims at this point. (I guess they could, the sloop could have robbed them in the first place) This really annoyed me, as the only thing I dislike more than bullying itself are bullies who think they can do their bullying while standing on moral high ground, like people who subscribe to popular morality and those who violently defend them, which might seem like me in this case. I think of it as... I wasn't so much helping the sloop as I was avoiding the waste of my aggression on those who don't intend to reciprocate, and hoping to inspire the fearful to become courageous. I dislike protecting people while not simultaneously teaching them to protect themselves. The inspiration campaign might have been a bit too successful, without previous preparation, and likely resulted in the sloop coming into the galleon's cannon range.

Anyway, this ferry interaction was enough to get a name of the aggressor on the recent player list. I thanked him for the skull through text message and advised them to be nicer to people in the future because then people would be nicer to them and got a party invite. All three of them sounded very tough and passionate, going as far as informing me that they have "all day" to chase me and that one of them even has 112k gold. They also confirmed that they robbed that sloop guy because at first they thought I was he. As it turned out, they only had about 15 more minutes, because shortly after that I waited for them to come near, boarded again, anchored, finished their bananas and grabbed a few of their more cannonballs.

We fought for a while and I got them to chase me outside and said "wow whose ship is that over there with three cosmetics, oh it's mine", and "if you guys were nicer I could be your fourth. just kidding you're way too bad at this, especially this guy" and mentioned the one who I assumed to be their "guard" as he always seemed to be the one on the ship as I was harassing it , although I wasn't doing much but knocking him back with the blunderbuss and running away the whole time, they quickly turned the blame on him. I pointed out how easily they turned and assured them that I was joking and they're all equally bad. I reminded them that I have nothing on my ship, less than stock, and that we really can do this for the rest of the day. I eventually got blunderbussed while trying to take ammo and opening the weapon choice instead. After respawn, I came around the rock the ship had been circling, I saw the galleon sinking and sailed over to it, no mermaid in sight. Since I had been kicked from the party a while before that, I asked through text where we could meet to do it again but got no response. I couldn't find any ships on the horizon, either. I assume they scuttled it because I didn't put any holes and it wasn't leaking when I died. I thought we were having fun.

I would really recommend paying attention to the turning radius of your ship and the effect the wind has on it when the wheel is left unattended. This has been invaluable to me while playing as a solo sloop. Without it, you can effectively never safely leave your ship or it travels miles away and any combat advantage you had is lost if you don't finish the fight before you return to the ship, and remember... when outmanned and outgunned, there are other ways to dissuade pursuers.

  • @salixstorm This game is full of bad players. Even one man can sink four man galleon. Explosive barrels too overpowered. We have even swam from outpost to other island just to take loot from galleon and swam back to sell. You don't even need ship to win. People that cry about being attacked all the time while being alone just aren't aware enough. I cant even think about playing this game with complete strangers and having good communication. Someone has to keep watch for others.

  • @salixstorm This post made my eyes watery, what an amazing read.
I hope for more moments like this (positive moments) in the future in the Sea of Thieves :) Good luck!

  • You.. you mean that instead of going on the forums posting galleon imba after sinking twice, you actually stuck to the game and LEARNED how to play it ? Preposterous !

Congratz on that victory. This is no unimpressive milestone on a personal level (the only level that matters) , you worked hard to improve, gained experience as a player and now starting to reap the rewards. If half the playerbase was like you we'd have a lot more fun both ingame and on the forums.
