NPC Ships. (Missions in which you gotta sink these NPC ships)

  • So in my opinion missions, where you have to kill NPC ships and steal the treasure from them would be a great idea. So of course they shouldnt be too hard to fight, but as a Pirate Legend mission, when you have much experience in the game I think it would be fun and something different.

Let me know if you like the idea of if it's even already in production.

See you on the seas, mateys!

  • despite them saying they don't want any NPC ships: I do like the idea.

the enemy of pirates was not other pirates, it was the Navy .

  • By not having any NPCs on the sea it gives you the special feeling that if you see a ship anywhere it must be another player, which is a nice feeling and makes the game world feel more alive and dynamic.

However, I don't think that is enough of a justification to not have any sort of NPCs. It's cool that they can be found on islands but having some sort of NPCs on the sea as well would be a good thing when you're having a tough time finding any other players.

  • @greenswede I think they shouldn't be there the whole time but when a mission is activated. And then they appear next to the island you were given the map of when you get closer.

  • There are players who are trying to avoid pvp at all costs, thoose guys can be your NPC/merchant ships :)

I think its planed - there is this trading faction, besides the goldhoarders and I think they give a sort of "bring this to there" missions. Well, sort off.

Anyway...NPC ships are not on my agenda dear OP, seeing sails at the horizon is to much of a thrill to be put into the "only NPCs" corner imho.

  • @commodore-jeff
I want merchant ships sailing around and Selling you cosmetics

  • @kustho I'm not saying they should be driving around the map the whole time but there should be missions in the later stages of the game where you and your crew have to go to an island somewhere and there will be a NPC ship that you have to destroy to get the treasure from them.

  • @kustho They could make different ships for the NPCs that look very different from a long distance as well.

  • I think NPC ships are a good idea but only if they will really significantly more powerful than normal player ships. They would be a kind of bosses l, something like the sceleton forts but swimming on water. Taking them down would require much work from many crews.

Aye, the Cpt be absolutely right, funny how people want PVE server and Enemy NPC ships, but don't realize Rare is making them have the best AI opponents by make those NPC's have human like thinking and ability........

  • @briskjester9238 Anything that encourages more teamwork is a plus in my book, so I can see this being a cool feature.

  • I disagree, no npc ships, but, they could have special missions where if you take them your ships "course" is revealed to other players on their map, and they may be able to come work together to try to take you down. As in its some special mission and when you do it a traitor reveals your planed course to the enemy (which is actually just whatever way you take)

  • I love this idea, but I feel like it should be something like the skeleton forts. Maybe word goes out through the outposts that a legendary ghost ship is roaming a particular area of the map and make it something that requires more than a single ship to take down. Either that or unlock it as special voyage material once you become legendary pirates.

  • @greenswede Don't get me wrong, i think a few ghost ships on seldom occurrence for really big bounty missions would be cool, but not the amount of NPCs most players want. On ground it makes sense, because players don't want to stand around guarding a fort/stash of treasure for the night... but you have opponents, those are your npcs in the water is all I was saying.

There is enough teamwork needed in this game for a ship to function, there's leadership, decision making, priority, resource management, scouting, and cooperation galore. Which is why so many people don't bother to try with people with no mic or who don't listen to directions (not that i do that to an extreme)

Totally agree... I'm not a PvP player. So far, I haven't minded the level of PvP in this game. I've succeeded far more than I have failed in terms of voyages and an alert crew can mostly avoid other ships if they want. But I much more prefer coop play and hope to see more PvE options for this at release.

  • No thanks. You may as well make the game single player only at that point. All ships should be player controlled. And i don't want to spend an hour trying to find and chase after another ship just to find it's an NPC when i finally get to it.

  • @commodore-jeff I don't know that I would actually want this.
That being said, I think this could work in a way similar to the raid system with one big ship occasionally showing up on the servers.
I think they would have to be really difficult opponents though. I'm talking crews with all cannons and sails manned at all times and good shots. Otherwise it would just be a free loot mechanic.
The crew must also be skeletons

  • Yes I love that idea. Great for battle training and order of souls harder missions.

  • It would be cool to see special pirate lords, like blackbeard sailing the seas. The navy and rogue pirate ships should be included as well. It doesn't need to be an extensive number. But I feel that npc ships would be good. Or at least npc crew for hire: gunner, cook, musician, extra sword hand. Skeletons are fun, but let's bring in more.

  • That sounds like a great idea! If some npc ships had like trade routes and stuff where you're able to raid ships would be amazing, and it would be cool if there was like a navy (Like the Spanish navy in the Caribbean) you have to look out for that'll attack you and you'll have to fight back bringing in more aggressive npcs and more fighting and strategy to the game.

  • I love the idea of NPC Treasure ships roaming the seas that you can attack and board for gold as it would add another element to the game. But I do agree with some of the threads that there is something exciting knowing that every ship is a player. So I was thinking that both could be achieved by adding something similar to space trading games like Elite, where the player can decide to take on missions transporting goods (legitimate or smuggling) from one port to another. Thereby become the trading ships that others could try to capture. From this, there could even be player-run trading companies which could take on a life of its own and allow some players to get rich in other ways other than just digging up treasure, which may eventually become same-old-same-old. By having something organic such as a trading system in a variety of goods where prices could vary from island to island, you create a far more interesting world populated by traders/smugglers who then in turn provide much more lucrative targets for those that want to be pirates in the game!
