What is the kraken for, is it just a random encounter that could mess people up or does it guard something like an entrance, island or chests or possible a chest or few inside it?
What is the kraken for?
Here's what we know. @spyro-dragma
The Kraken is an ever-present entity within the world, not an event.
It will lurk around, listening for any ships, and strike with very little warning.
The water will turn black with ink shortly before you are attacked.
It has the potential to attack up to 8 ships at once and do massive damage to your hull.
It can pick you up with it's tentacles and throw or drown you.
To defeat the Kraken, you need to destroy all 8 tentacles and then destroy the brain/head.We don't have info on rewards or the respawn time of the Kraken, but we're all damn excited and scared for our first encounter.

I hope that the encounter is rather... rare ;o
And I hope that it is extremely hard, as in: if you manage to survive and save your ship, you did well! Killing it should be extremely hard.
That makes me think about whether Rare is planning to scale the encounter depending on the number of players involved. Can I solo the Kraken? Do I need at least 3 crew members? Etc.

With the correct amount of resources, I suspect you would be able to SOLO it no problem - the issue is i suspect if people happen to sail into the area and see an attack... they are joining in
Well, for sure! That's why the scaling thing came to mind. Imagine it scales up when new people join in, then some will tend to kill the struggling player(s) to make it easier for themselves... Though I'm sure some will come help too!
If it does not scale up, it might be impossible to solo, but it will promote cooperation.

In another thread (which I can no longer find) @K7-Issues mentioned the Kraken having an AI. So to answer your question, she's a ruthless killing machine that will hunt us as soon as we get on the ocean D:

Even if there's only 6 ships, its got enough for a few more. Tells ya how scares you should be.
