Solo Players Quality of Life Idea

  • Hello Rare team,

First of all, I’d like to say that I love Sea of Thieves and the freedom the game gives players. Solo slooping is one of my favorite experiences in the game, but it can also become overwhelming because one player has to manage steering, sails, repairs, cannons, boarding defense, PvE threats, and navigation all at once.

Because of that, I wanted to share an idea for a possible future mechanic focused on reducing solo frustration without replacing the importance of real crews.

My idea is a cursed relic-type weapon/item that allows players to temporarily summon weak support allies.

    Some examples:

    • Melee skeleton
    • Ranged skeleton
    • Siren for water combat
    • Repair ghost for ship repairs

The important part is that these summons would intentionally be weak and temporary. The goal would not be to make solo players stronger than crews, but simply to help reduce the “I cannot physically be everywhere at once” problem.

    Some balancing ideas:

    • Maximum of 2 active summons at a time
    • Repair ghost always capped at 1 per crew
    • 90-second duration
    • Limited charges before needing ammo crate refill
    • Fragile AI with slow reaction times
    • Repair ghost only works if the crew has empty player slots

    For example:

    • Solo sloop = repair ghost allowed
    • Duo sloop = repair ghost disabled
    • Duo brigantine = allowed
    • Full crews = disabled

This would stop larger crews from abusing the mechanic while still helping undermanned ships.

I also want to emphasize that the intention is not to overpower solo players or replace real crews. The summons would function more as temporary support or distractions rather than strong combat tools.

The purpose of the mechanic would simply be to give solo players brief moments to breathe during overwhelming situations, especially for players who may not have friends to play with or who are uncomfortable using open crews. I believe this kind of support-focused system could help accessibility and reduce frustration without removing the challenge and danger that make Sea of Thieves special.

I also feel like this kind of system could fit naturally into Sea of Thieves because the game already has phantoms, skeletons, sirens, cursed relics, and supernatural mechanics.

Even if this exact idea never becomes reality, I wanted to share the concept because I think support-oriented mechanics for solo players could be healthy for the game.

Thank you for your work on the game and for continuing to support it.

    BoneCalllers, Reaper Chests.
    we already have such item.

help reduce the “I cannot physically be everywhere at once” problem.

Get a Crew. Not that difficult.

    Full crews = disabled

"All fair and equal on the seas" If a full crew cant use such a tool, nobody should.

especially for players who may not have friends to play with or who are uncomfortable using open crews.

So, those with full crews, have to deal with a solo player, with Auto repair ghosts fixing there ship. Basically saying "Haha"

  • @burnbacon I think you missed some points.
The idea is not to break the game. I actually believe this idea have a very limited potential on purpose. As I mentioned, they are meant to be weak/slower than real players. They would work as a support for those who indeed struggle to play with more people. It's not a matter of "getting a crew being difficult or not". It might easy to you, but many people don't have friends to play the game with, and/or struggle with randoms. I can use myself as an example... I'm not native English speaker, I do have thick accent, sometimes struggle to understand, and still share a house. Usually I play at night and cannot talk loud.
The idea of this weapon is to create a room to breathe and reduce pressure on lower skilled/new players. I can't picture actual pro players using such a tool, because they do perform better with stronger weapons.

  • @dolksbr you choose to play solo though so that is your own choice. I agree with @BurnBacon. It gives you a fair advantage to have someone else repairing for you. There is no excuse you share a house you need to speak low or you speak broken english. There is text chat in game you can use that if someone is willing to play with you if you choose to use no mic. Having an AI do the work takes a real players spot away from that server. With a max of 16 players now if you have an AI that server now can only have 14 more players and if others have AI's that again leaves less real people which brings dead servers. This Will never work. Maybe the game isn't for you if you can't do text chat with someone if you can't speak to them unfortunately.

  • I think you missed some points.

    No, I covered the points.
Your wanting AI helpers for your solo voyages, temp as they are. When will it stop and players they dont get Buff down the road, attack for you, do things more. etc.

work as a support for those who indeed struggle to play with more people.

That is the learning curve of the game, removing that just makes things to easy.

many people don't have friends to play the game with, and/or struggle with randoms.

I dont have anyone, I have randoms. Always randoms.
and there are literially 6 posts already of people asking to group up...Give them a shout.

I do have thick accent, sometimes struggle to understand, and still share a house. Usually I play at night and cannot talk loud.

Excuses sorry, we all have them and funny we all struggle with something.
Nobody cares how you sound, nobody really understands each other, that why we have the Chat wheel. And often..nobody really speaks over Mic. Hence, Chat Wheel.

The idea of this weapon is to create a room to breathe and reduce pressure on lower skilled/new players.

and vets, sweats, and try-hards can freely use it as well. It not all about lower-skilled, new players. But again, it's a learning experience; get out on the field and explore, chat with randoms, and get out of your comfy space. Really, Discord/Forums all have people posting, "Someone help me."

I can't picture actual pro players using such a tool, because they do perform better with stronger weapons.

I cant picture pros NOT using if it gives them any sorta advantage. Free repairs without being on the ship? Heck yeah.

Seriously. Checking the forums right now, there are about 10 this week of people asking to group up, first timers, returning players, Vets asking for new crewmates. If its help or what, its here.

  • Alright guys, thanks for the feedback :))
Just had an idea and decided to share. Have a great dayy

  • @Dolksbr

    struggle with randoms

If you mean Open Crew, then that's understandable.

Try finding people to play with (or even a guild) via the official Sea of Thieves Discord server.
It also has a channel for players without microphone so only text chat is possible.

  • @mrpalmerdixon I never tried open crew because I'm one of those who don't feel comfortable on vc with strangers. I'll definitely try the discord server though. Thanks!!
