Feedback on the Developer Update

  • When I heard the words “developer update” just a few hours after the Windrose launch wiped out 25% of the Steam playerbase, I genuinely thought we were done for. I was convinced I’d be giving a big ol “I told y’all so” today and we’d be getting Season 21 Maintenance and Modes with everyone rightfully up in arms furious.

But instead? I’m impressed way beyond words.
We got one of the biggest wins for Developer Updates since as far as I can honestly remember.

It wasn’t just “here’s the issue.”
It was “Here’s what we’re going to do to fix the X,Y,Z issue”

It didn’t feel like the team was pretending to be hearing out issues, but playing it safe by giving no tangible solution. We now have solutions that we can give feedback on, and not only that, those solutions are pretty damn good.

For once, it felt like our feedback had been heard AND acted on. I don’t know what the aversion was to listening to your playerbase telling you what your playerbase wanted, but I’m happy to say better late than never for this instance.

Thank you guys for the clear, concise, and informative developer update. Each and every team member that made this possible. Even though I’m still incredibly frustrated with the rampant issues causing the game to get to this place, for once, a Developer Update brought me a huge glimmer of hope instead of indecisive doom and gloom.

I hope this is the new standard for Sea of Thieves going forward.

    (Unrelated)
I can understand people being frustrated with a lack of base game content for Season 20, however, I think there’s a brighter side to it than a lot of people see; it gives the team a huge chance to perform a plethora of bug fixes and address other rampant balancing issues with the gold economy. This in my eyes has been something the game has needed since Kingly Loot was introduced.

  • THEY FOUND MARK OH GOD HES BEEN HIT

Me bawling over the body of Mark (he’s finally been hit)

  • Like this approach, specially the removal of on demand RAID voyages.

Its a continuation of the great update to HG and i hope they keep tunning whats already there and not just add content for the sake of it.

  • I love the fact people had high doubts for months now they quickly turn over by pretty words. XD

Meanwhile us other folks just sitting here thinking. Yup we knew this already, everything always looking good.

But yeah. Of course people be upset S20 is just a custom server season + bug fixed with no real major update.
That is what players wanted anyways, full season just for bug fixes.

It didn’t make players happy when they did it last time either.

  • @Il-TruTh-lI Your post has been removed as it goes against the Forum Rules and Pirate Code.

    ALWAYS:

Be mindful of what you’re saying and if someone asks a question, see if you can help them out as you’d appreciate being helped out yourself if the roles were reversed.

  • @burnbacon "everything always looking good"

Somehow I'm not surprised that you're one of the people who ignore the problems this game has been having recently.

  • A positive step no doubt and good to get clarity on Season 20.
Custom Seas will be used by a tiny percentage of the player base - but will benefit content creators and look forward to what they do with it on Twitch and Youtube.

    In my opinion Adventure needs

    • A new Sweat Chest for people to fight over.

    • Factions boosted to prestige X for number go up.

    • An on demand voyage for CoF. Add it to Legendary Voyage - multi island staying on one server. This could be done in conjunction with CoF chance on all World Events.

This would be minimal development effort but add so much to Adventure.

Good they are looking at the negative effects of Diving.

Removing Raid Voyages however has some issues.

    • Commendation loot can only be found via Raid Voyages.

    • High Tier loot found on Raids is good for Emmy Ledger.

    • Hunter's Call loot isn't integrated into emergent World Events. Every other faction is.

Far better to remove all lower tier dives and KEEP World Event Raid Voyages.
However Emmy flag reverts to Grade I following a dive.

Ultimately it is a positive step they are 'experimenting' and I am sure we will see it evolve.

  • @pc-monkfish Custom Seas will only look good on paper.

  • I'm not sure Windrose will be that impactfull for SoT.
This might age poorly, but Windrose is a survival game, this is not an open mmo/sandbox game.
The only common thing is the pirate theme. (Wich is enough for many people to see them as exactly the same games for some reason. There is some overlap, but not much in my opinion).

As for the Developper Update and Season 20, I'm not a big fan of the Custom Sea feature to be honest.
I feel like this is just another "Safer Sea", but that target even less players (content creators mostly...?).

I guess it is a plus to promote the game via those specific players, but this is not something that everyone can really enjoy I would say.

It is good to focus on bug and feedback for a bit though.
Putting "a chance to get" Chest of Fortune in every World Event is also refreshing in my opinion.

Raid Voyages were never an issue to me, but I rarely do Emerging World Events other that Fleet of Fortune and Reapers Fortress those days so I might underestimate the impact of voyages on others.

It's worth noting, custom content is its own draw. Depending on the available tools, of course. Roblox just beat the total Steam concurrent users, y'know? All on the back of people making custom things in-game.

  • @arias1101 don’t get me wrong, it’s true that while both games scratch the Pirate itch, I feel like Windrose’s world is significantly better than SoT’s world, but SoT will always have the better mechanical and story writing freedom.

I do really hope to see these two games have friendly competition and push each other to their limits, but imo, Windrose is the better Pirate Experience going above and beyond with exploration and reputation, while SoT is the better Pirate Game having mechanical freedom and unique mechanics I don’t think any other Pirate Game will ever see

  • While it's disappointing that there isn't more to Season 20, I think the focus on improving game health and tackling bugs is long overdue. Hopefully, we'll approach Season 21 with a game that's in a better state.

The Raid voyage changes are interesting and seem very good on paper, but I would like to see them also tackle the misuse of diving voyages on the whole. Otherwise, it's just catering more to hunters, and the game has done too much of that in the last few years, to the detriment of the PvPvE ecosystem.

Regarding Windrose, as a few people mentioned it, it is a very different game. It plays more like Valheim than anything. BUT a lot of folk, myself included, are interested in pirate-themed games because of first getting into Sea of Thieves. So I can see a lot of PvE-focused players hopping over to that, purely for the vibes, and because it offers progress that can't be "lost to sweats". It also seems to have a lot more positivity around it than Skull & Bones had.

That's why, if we want to keep those players, balancing the ecosystem is critical. Windrose isn't direct competition but it is a potential factor in the game bleeding players.

So I do hope Rare take that into consideration.
