I am sure this idea has been discussed before, but I think about it every time I am running around on my sloop. To me, games like Minecraft have their appeal because you can make a home for yourself in that world and you can literally build it block by block. In Sea of Thieves, of course there is no building, but your ship ends up becoming basically your home. It is nice to be able to change the bed color, or hull pattern, sails, the wheel, etc. But I wish we had even more options to further personalize our ship. There are things I look at constantly on the ship that I wish I had more control over which I will mention below. These I feel like could make player ships stand out even more than they already do through the basic customization options.
Items that would be great to customize:
- The banisters in front of the captains wheel and behind the capstan.
- The hand-railings on the stairs.
- The ladders up onto the ship and up the mast.
- The shelves we can put trinkets on.
- The kind of miscellaneous cargo in the hull of our ships, like the barrels you can't interact with (This one is debatable since the barrels can be used to disguise yourself next to them).
- The actual tarp on the back of your ship hanging over your map table.
- The lanterns around your ship.
- The harpoon guns.
- Your grill, water barrel, and other amenities.
- The type of wood you have for floor.
They wouldn't have to do all of these, but for a game where all of the motivation for playing is in the cosmetics you can unlock through playing, this would add a lot of meaningful variety that could make every player's ship even more unique and feel like a place they want to spend even more of their time. And of course the biggest motivation is it just gives players more of a drive to spend more time playing the game and doing voyages, tall tales, and world events. These items could be unlocked the same way as everything else: some are available from the get-go for gold, others are unlockable through gold + commendations as well as doubloons.
This could be the equivalent to a Sea of Thieves housing update which is a focus that is usually pretty popular in pretty much any other sandbox kind of game. This is something I really hope they consider adding in the near future because I think it is something that could really increase the longevity of the game.
