Game mechanics for pets and a separate setting for "interaction with pets"

  • It would be great to see gameplay mechanics for pets. For example, allowing pets to carry a small item for sale, similar to the skeletons they find.
If we delve deeper into this, we could create different mechanics for different animal species.

    For example:

    1. Parrots - carry 1 small item for sale
    2. Dogs - can find a cross on the map
    3. Boars - search for fruit, either dig it up or point to a barrel with mangoes or pineapples (mangoes and pineapples, not bananas :))
    4. Cats - periodically catch rats on the ship and bring them to the player, who fries them and uses them like regular meat in the game
    5. Dolphins - always swim near the ship, and when you're in the water, they can protect you from shark bites once or twice
    6. Owls - can, for example, bring you a bag of ammo
    7. Fish - your fish swim nearby while you're fishing and speed up the fishing process. For example, to tire a fish out faster, you need to reel in your line less often (1-2 times less often).
      And so on.

Considering that almost all pets are only available for donated currency, it's possible to give all players a basic pet, and skins will still be available for donated currency.

However, this is advantageous for the developers, as they can add a new pet with new mechanics each season and sell skins for it.

What I'd definitely like to see in the game is a separate setting for "blocking interaction with pets," similar to the one that "blocks interaction with trinkets" and "sit positions on the ship." I don't use pets only because they get in the way in combat if accidentally picked up.

What do you think of the basic and more detailed idea, as well as a separate setting?

  • Ahoy matey!

The one small issue here... and it pops up every time...

This feels a bit too much Pay 2 Win a mechanic hidden behind a paywall.

  • Has always been a good idea and would be fun bar the 'pay to win'. One way around this would be to give away one free pet of each sort. But, you will still be at a disadvantage with smaller crews, as a gally crew can have 4 different type of pet and therefore pet skill bonus.

  • No to the mechanics for pets.

Yes to the option to disable pet interactions (even if they just make it so you only have the interact prompt when you have equipment or weapons stowed)

  • @musicmee
Then we could simply give each player one pet, and all pets would have the same mechanic—helping them carry small items for sale.

As for "pay to win," as the commenters rightly pointed out, we could give each player one pet with each mechanic. I wasn't suggesting specific ideas for PvP, but merely pointing out useful features for PvE.

How about a separate setting menu item for pets?)

  • @whawk0 Sadly, that would mean less people buy a pet from the Emporium decreasing revenue long term...

    I like the idea though!

I used to think the same until a few days ago. I was watching a Hitbo stream and the topic came up. Hitbo would like pet mechanics on the condition that people get free default pets; and I 100% agree.

It would be like the hide emotes in that case. It would be a mechanics accessible to everyone but with cosmetic options from the emporium.

I don’t know if I like the specific mechanics suggested above, but pet mechanics would be fun.

I also really want the ability to turn off pet interactions. They could be pet “training” options like “will not eat food out of people’s hands” and “will not perch at the helm”. With the option to fully disable the interaction prompts on an individual basis.

  • @whawk0
The problem with giving pets extra gameplay mechanics is they cost Ancient Coins, and that’s already a huge advantage to people who spend money. Adding stuff like parrots carrying items or dolphins protecting you just makes that pay-to-win gap even worse in Sea of Thieves. Suddenly players with pets have real combat or loot advantages over players who don’t, and that just isn’t fair.

  • I agree. However I'm all for pets carrying an item at the least. Treat it like a skelly. Birds carry it with their talons, monkeys just carry it, 4 legged animals could have a little backstrap that appears when I "hand them" something @musicmee

  • As for the “pay-to-win” aspect of this feature, frankly, this isn't Rare's first time doing this. Even if they aren't directly responsible, there are already pay-to-play features on consoles (an Xbox subscription is required to access many more features).
And recently, you need a subscription just to get “better sound”...

As for the loss of revenue, well, I’d say developers need to make us want to support them in the first place... Except that for the past few months, it’s been the opposite effect, given their disastrous decisions.

One can say, Simply paying for internet is a subscription just to play any video game regardless of system. So even Steam...

you need a subscription just to get “better sound”...

yeah tried it, not even worth the money.
