Sea of Thieves file size

  • I'm sure this has been brought up a lot but I really want to get my friends into this game, but the file size has been a big reason none of them will keep it installed.
The 128?GB install (at least last I checked) is over 1/10th of my main drive and it's a hard sell for most people I know.
I wouldn't expect it to be cut to next to nothing but I just want to be able to get more people to experience this wonderful game.

Hope this can reach someone because I think this is a game worth being shared and it's held some of my favorite multiplayer experiences to this day.

  • Possible to see them cutting out Tall Tale content and have that similar to CoD, if you have it installed, its in its own thing. But you can uninstall it to save space. (that depends if the TT content is even big and saves anything.)

But future adds always will build, including them audios/voices, textures and such. (Most of the file size is 4K textures from ships, outfits and weapons as many say.) but who would wanna view this world in low?

But it could be a lot worse...as many complain about recycled content, they could add 100% new stuff that becomes Perm addon...

Ever since Helldiver did some cutting, everyone thinks all games should be able too.

But, if SoT really wants to cut back, they need to separate and allow people to install and uninstall Story driven stuff. Tall Tales being the biggie stuff.
Have a new choice to just play Story driven voyages only. (maybe block off parts the map you wont need to explore when doing them) and once you done them, you uninstall.

Of course that opens more work to do. Now they have to separate updates. One for the main servers, content that wont go away and part of the TT addons, and one just for TT stories.
But everyone seems to want to downsize the game, never seem to see "How" they should or actually can....Im waiting on those so called "pros in the field" to step up.

  • People who truly want to play this game won't care about the size of the game file.
And only those who start the Sea of Thieves for less than 5 hours a week will have complaints about file size.
Because they only play occasionally, the high space occupation will prevent them from installing other games.
I play games on the Xbox Series X console,
The Xbox Series X is advertised to have a built-in 1TB storage space,
But the player's available space is 802GB.
I have never complained about the size of the game.
If you want to expand the hard drive space of the Xbox Series X console, you need to buy an external hard drive that has been authorized and verified by Microsoft. The price of 1TB is approximately over $150+. Not only is it expensive, but it also has only one interface.
But PC users can expand a bunch of SSDs.

Not all games can compress files unless the game has a large number of obsolete files in the distribution.
If GTA6 is released. Game files may reach up to 150G+. Should we also request R-Star compression?

Nobody truly wants to play this game.

The game being roughly 100 GB means you can only get 7 other games (assuming they're the same file size). I have Sea of Thieves and it takes up the same as OP's storage.

Some people don't have money for SSDs and extra storage.

SoT has a TON of useless files. Either they should add all unused content to make the size worth it or just delete those unused files since they'll never get added.

GTA6 isn't even released so we don't know how much content is in the game for it to be 150G+.

  • Nobody truly wants to play this game.

False, if that was true...we wouldnt have complaints about matters of the game. :P

Some people don't have money for SSDs and extra storage.

But they have the money to subscribe to a service to play cloud games, purchase Ingame currency or cosmetics...

SoT has a TON of useless files

Besides textures, what useless files does SoT have? Or rather, content added that 'nobody uses'

  • The issue with the file size could be solved if they removed old game content they don't let us access. There are hundreds of pieces of clothing, equipment, and weapons that are in the files that we do not get access to. They could probably easily clean it up.

  • @burnbacon I don't expect anything on the level of Helldivers' file size cut, but I've heard in the past they use a similar system of duplicating files into different parts of the game to reduce time needed to load assets on hdds for older consoles (correct me if i'm wrong about this) which leads to a lot of the bloat. At the very least the story content being a optional separate download would help though yeah.

  • @karminiumsot While I like the game enough to keep it installed, when it's only something we hop on for the occasional weekend comparing the file size to the amount of content, it just gets a bit hard to justify if people have other things they want to play. I should clarify that I have a second drive and don't have as much of a storage issue myself but it's been a consistent problem for others I try to get in. Sea of Thieves is comparable in size to some of the biggest modern releases I have installed so I 100% sympathize with it.

  • @karminiumsot said in Sea of Thieves file size:

    Having regrets about your username?
