Negative and/or positive wording/framing in game settings

  • There are quite a few settings that have the word “Disable” in front of them. This makes it confusing at first glance and feels quite unnecessary for a on/off toggle (same with the “Enable” ones, although the way those are framed doesn’t make it confusing).
I don’t think this is high priority, but it’s also something an intern could probably fix, since changing the functions for on and off around, or switching the UI on/off part alongside the wording, shouldn’t be that complex + it would just look nicer. I’ve noticed this only happens with the newer settings and don’t know what outsourcing led to this in the first place, tbh (Google Translate?)

Here is a list of all "Disable" settings:
Disable controller input on PC (Input)
    Disable Ship Sitting Interactions (Gameplay)
    Disable Ship Trinket interactions (Gameplay)
Disable Camera Sway on Ziplines (Gameplay)
    Disable Invite notifications (HUD)
    Disable Season notifications (HUD)
    Disable Ship Milestone notifications (HUD)
    Disable Blur (Graphics Settings)
    Disable Screen Shake (Graphics Settings)
Disable Rats on your ship (Graphics Settings)
    Disable centered text (Language)
    Disable Cross-Region Matchmaking [Y/N] (Matchmaking)
    Disable Guild Invites (Guild Management)
    Disable Guild Notifications (Guild Management)

Here is a list of all "Enable" settings:
    Enable Aim Assist (Input)
    Enable Unstable Connection Indicator (HUD)
Enable Additional Wheel Sound Volume (Audio Settings)
Enable Aim Assist Audio (Audio Settings)
Enable Vomit Sound Effects (Audio Settings)
    Enable Compass Proximity Announcer (Language)

    Hope I didn't miss any

  • My initial thought here is that things are labled Enable or Disable based on what is enabled and not by default.

  • @mopwieldinghedgehog That's what I thought at first too, but I'm pretty sure Vomit Sound Effects are on by default?

  • @mopwieldinghedgehog Some of them yes, but not all. Either way I believe the point is still the same, it's unnecessarily confusing in the way it's worded

  • If everything said on and off. I be more confused.
Disabled sounds better and straight forward wha I am Turing off. (See?)

But the wording choice comes down to formal, professional and sounding better. Disabled is what it means, you’re disabling it. Turning something off is more for….electrical. I can’t turn off rats on my ship, but they can be disabled.

  • It's not the biggest deal in the world, but I will admit that it has annoyed me at times that it's often akin to a double negative, and it's inconsistent.

I think the cleanest way to display these settings would be to remove the words "disable" and "enable" from the label entirely and have the options display the current state.

    e.g.

    • Ship Siting Interactions: [on/off]
    • Rats on your ship: [on/off]
    • Aim Assist: [on/off]
  • @burnbacon You are turning it on and off either way, the "Disable" or "Enable" wording has nothing to do with the switch itself. The majority of settings already follows the simple [Setting name: On/Off]
