Revamp Diving

  • Diving has ruined the experience Sea of Thieves servers gave prior to the update. Before, you would have a ton of crews battling every world event, have notoriety with pirates in the lobby, and insane loot stacks. Now, it is just diving to find specific world events and hourglass.

They need to remove diving as a whole for voyages. Diving should only be given to raid voyages and hourglass, and even for raid voyages, there should be a cooldown for each time you dive. Limited time mega-stashes (like the ashen chest stash, the current reaper fort, etc.) should be available for natural spawning world events only to give incentive to stay in the same server.

I also like the idea some people mentioned on player bounties. If you are causing chaos within a server (sinking ships, collecting loot, and doing quests), your bounty would increase. Players who sink you will get a ton of reputation for their faction, as well as gold and other treasures to show that you sank a notorious pirate. The treasure could be a more extravagant logbook, the flag on their mast, or their skull.

  • Well with the new system coming where if your sunk by same crew in short period. You forced to server switch.
Just another way to reduce player conflict and battles. Shame.

  • Diving really needs a cooldown or some kind of risk to it. My ideas are as follows:

    • Diving only existing for longer voyages. Popping to a small island, doing 1 dig on two treasures and immediately diving again is stupid.
    • Diving should maybe just be its own voyage to be honest. For the crew to stop at 2 or 3 islands to gather the materials for a dive ritual or something.
    • Alternatively, diving could give a debuff when used. Diving again while the debuff is active can cause the ship to lose supplies or even sink.
    • Even weirder option - give me a voyage to conduct a ritual where I make the server I'm on unable to be dove into for maybe 30-60 minutes.

I think diving as a mechanic is fine - but diving every 2 mins is ridiculous and causes lots of annoying behavior in the game, especially with Grade 5 reapers being able to hunt emissaries AND world events without any actual risk. Literally every single good interaction I've ever had was with crews who stuck around on a server for an hour or two. The dive spam makes this almost never happen now.

  • Diving only existing for longer voyages. Popping to a small island, doing 1 dig on two treasures and immediately diving again is stupid.

There is a Cooldown of 10min, starts after you arrive on server.

  • Unfortunately diving as it is can't be removed. It's too essential to the gameplay for many people, it's been this way for too long. I think they should add more incentive to make players want to keep doing stuff on the same server though. Mega stashes should be a consistent feature of the game, at a lower rate, but never removed. Could be like a 5% chance to be a mega stash on any world event.

A bounty system would not be an opt in system. How would the game determine if you sink someone or if you defended yourself? The bounty system could and would also be used to create infinite free gold as alliance players would just feed one player on the server repeatedly until their bounty is really high and then take it.

  • @potatosord There should be no reason for diving to be essential for people. You are basically server hopping for certain events instead of doing them. People who do that are lazy.

  • @swagalisous7451 Or they have limited time to complete certain commendations they want. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with you, I am just saying that 'lazy' is not an accurate conclusion.

  • @mopwieldinghedgehog If lazy is too strong, then “you’re not putting in any effort to sail” is better. Diving ruins the experience of having to watch out for other crews when doing quests, tall tales, or commendations.

  • In a sense, Diving fits with those who "have less time" as it was designed around that Idea. But it has made servers less...filling.
It used to get started on first voyage of the day, and now it more less used to skip around servers "Looking for the good stuff"

If they only bring back the randomization of events. Loot in WE can be "Mega" or Normal, Chest of Fortune can appear in any WE but you wont know unless you complete it. Kraken spawns more often and drops actual worth stuff.

Now days: Nobody wants to be on a server with Ashen Lords, Phantom Fleet, Skeleton Fleets, or even normal Forts. Or even if there is more than 1 Reaper on a server. If you feel your being chased and you have distance, Dive away. (nobody cares for loot)

  • @swagalisous7451 You can't dive with treasure so at no point does diving remove the risk from traveling with treasure. The only thing diving does is get a person to the start of an encounter faster. It removes the part of the experience where you if you were sunk it would be pointless to you and to them.

  • @potatosord The risk wasn’t having treasure on the boat, it was the supplies and the emissary. Before diving, you would need to watch out for other ships when carrying supplies and loot as you do quests, and you would have to fight people to escape. Now, people just dive and run away, ruining the server experience.

Not if you complete the voyage, which can be just seconds.
