Tall tale and curse unlock requirements

  • Hey everyone,
I wanted to share some feedback about progression and cosmetic unlocks — especially regarding the Gold Curse and other cosmetic rewards.

Recently, I completed the Shores of Gold Tall Tale five times, excited to finally earn the Gold Curse, before realizing that it actually requires completing all Tall Tales five times with every commendation. While I completely understand the idea of rewarding players who put in a lot of effort, I feel the current system turns what could be a fun challenge into a heavy grind.

Many players, including myself, really enjoy the story and adventure aspects of Sea of Thieves but don’t always have the time to repeat every tale multiple times. It would make the game a lot more enjoyable if Tall Tale completions only needed to be done once (or maybe twice) for cosmetic unlocks — keeping them challenging, but not exhausting.

I’d also like to suggest reconsidering a few other progression requirements:

The Hourglass curses could be made accessible from level 60 in Reapers, and Pirate Legend could be obtainable from level 40 in the Trading Companies.

The Gold Ghost Curse might feel more achievable if the requirement was level 500 instead of 1000.

These adjustments would keep rare cosmetics meaningful but make them more attainable and fun for a wider range of players — especially those who can’t play for long sessions.

Sea of Thieves is one of my favorite games, and I’d love to see it continue to grow. Hopefully, this suggestion resonates with others who feel the same way.

  • With diving and safer seas. That heavy grind becomes a cake walk. You can skip a lot of sailing.

  • I think if they were going to change this, they would have done so either when they released the Seabound Soul, A Pirate's Life or the Monkey Island Tall Tales, which both had reduced completion counts for full commendation unlocks. That is 3 separate TT releases over several years where they could have gone back and adjusted the originals and didn't bother so I think it's safe to say that they aren't going to change it now.

I don't think they are going to change the Curse levels either, and their time would be better spent improving the Hourglass mode as a whole.

  • If they did make us have to do the tall tale multiple times, make it 1-3 times to be in line with EVERY OTHER TALL TALE outside of the main story ones. Having to do 45 tall tales is 45 hours, and its something I'll probably never finish. As for the other curses, hourglass curses are a grind for a reason, they want more people to engage with PvP in this game. If it was that low of a level, it wouldn't actually feel worth getting. Something a lot of people don't know about hourglass levels is that level 50 is not half way. To get 50% of the XP you need for ghost curse, its level 68. Level 69-100 is the same amount of XP as 1-68, so reducing it to level 60 is cutting it down to about 40% of the total XP. I think gold should also stay at 1000, but they should put more unlocks between level 100 and level 1000. They have unlocks up to 200 on guardians but they have unlocks up to 500 on servants, so evening those out would be nice. Would give people a reason to keep playing guardians aside from gold ghost. PL being level 50 is not an issue, especially with the amount of double XP events these days. We had a 2 week long event recently that gave you 10x gold and xp from sold athena flags, mega stashes that we still have for another MONTH give you 3 CoFs, which on their own give you like 4 levels in gold hoarders without emissary. With a grade 5 you get like 10 levels from one chest. Right now you can get most of the way to PL from like 5 reaper forts. Pirate legend is also nowhere near endgame, PL is basically just a tutorial, which makes is sad that like 1/35th of players have it.
