In the latest developer update, Drew emphasized how they “need to do better,” and admitted it probably sounds like a meme at this point. To me, it came off as a fake and disingenuous apology aimed purely at damage control. Sea of Thieves has been a game that, since its release, has been plagued by issues like hit registration, desync, lag, disconnects, cheaters, and exploits, just to name a few. All of these are game-breaking, and yet there has never been a time where the game was in a normal state. I don’t mean perfect, just normal. It always goes from absolutely poor, game-breaking performance in those areas to slightly less poor, but never truly good. This is without even factoring in how many times seasons have been delayed or released with little to no content. Yet Rare refuses to put in even the most minimal effort to make amends with their player base.
Despite the game being centered around cosmetic progression, at some point they decided it was totally fine to stop releasing cool, earnable cosmetics and instead put the majority of them in the Emporium. And surprise, surprise the Emporium always stays consistent and never misses an update, no matter how many issues the game has. How hard would it be, instead of releasing the same scripted apology video every month, to actually care and try to make up for their shortcomings for once? Seriously, they could’ve just said, “Okay, we messed up, and Season 18 will take longer. In the meantime, here are a few cool cosmetic sets you can grind for until we get back on track.” Not a perfect solution by any means, but it would be a start. Even the Halloween event didn’t have a cosmetic reward this year, yet they still expect us to keep playing and supporting the game. I’m almost certainly ranting into the void at this point, but it’s just sad to see a game like SoT have one of the most pointless downfalls in gaming history, all because of greed...
