Suggestion: Animal Companions for Hunting and Exploration.

  • Hello Sea of Thieves team!
I'm a huge fan of the game and love how pets add a touch of personality to each crew.
I'd like to suggest the idea of adding functional animal companions that would assist with activities like hunting, exploration, or even transporting loot.

I envision animals like falcons, small dragons, or even sniffer dogs that could:
    🐾 Help find hidden treasure.
🐾 Detect dangers like traps or nearby enemies.
🐾 Assist in hunting wild animals for resources.

I think these companions would fit perfectly with the game's spirit of adventure and discovery, and would add a new level of immersion for pirates who want an even stronger bond with their pets.

Thank you for your amazing work and for listening to the community. I hope this suggestion inspires future adventures in Sea of Thieves!

    Fair winds and fair seas!

  • And how would you get these companions?
    Are they free?

No. Then pets become pay 2 win.
On top of that; People who may not like using pets now are required to use them, or else be at a disadvantage.

  • sigh

I kinda hate those threads, because they always end up the same years-old boiler plate replies of "they'd be pay2win", or "they'd disadvantage players who don't like pets".

Rare could easily solve 90% of the objections to giving pets more use by having a rent-a-basic-pet-for-the-session station at every outpost, and then it's just a matter of choosing which pet/which function you want to use during your session, if any, depending on your playstyle.

Also, Rare just gave us skeleton "pets" that fight for you, find X-marks-the-spot locations and carry your loot back to your boat. Giving pets similar functions wouldn't be that far fatched.

(anyway, it's a moot point, Rare already struggles delivering content for their seasons, they won't bother revamping pets ; they'd probably have to rework the entire system, since pets are more or less animated cosmetics right now)

Why should people need to come up with new arguments to the same idea posted month after month?

Except this still means that people who may not like the pets are either left behind, or forced to use pets for the advantage.
So it's not solving '90% of the objections'.

  • So basically the OoBaB skeletons but cuter.

  • @kaoteek OoBaB skeletons are actually balanced though. They can never leave the island you find them on. They will never be able to help outside of one singular island. They already have basically all the functionality this guy is asking for in a pet. Yes, it would make it pay to win, a rent a pet system would cost money every time, or be an annoyance to people if its forced. OoBaB are purely optional and do not interfere with anyones ability to have an even play field. If you kill an OoBaB and then res it yourself, it's yours now. Any player can do that, and it will only be of consequence on the singular island it happens on.
