With the new Xbox/discord functionality - Can we be in a discord chat and still hear Xbox game chat at the same time, the way I see PC streamers and gamers do all the time?
I can’t seem to figure it out.
And if not? Why not?
Cheers.

What if you guys just used game chat so you can play with other people??????????????????????????
Ingame chat quality vs party chat quality
Also when ingame, you can't chat while in a loading screen
And sometimes I don’t want to hear others...
Get a chatpad, that's the way I communicate with others outside of our party chat

I believe the answer is no, you can not. I haven't tried myself, but this is what I've heard from people who have tried in SoT. I'm hearing that it's just giving you the party chat ability but in a discord call instead. As to why you can't, that I couldn't tell you.
Correct, the in-game chat is awful. I literally have to double tap (any) key that is assigned to my push to talk, if I am returning to the SoT client from another tab such as Google chrome, or media player. Half my responses to other players talking is "WHAT?!"
He's right, in-game chat needs improved very badly.
Man that’s devastating. The whole reason I was looking for was to Discord on Xbox was so the Sea of Thieves would have voices again!
What a disappointing application of Discord.
Xbox servers remain quiet graveyards filled.
And we don’t get that awesome silly mouth animation when our pirates talk.
Back to party chat then. It’s simpler.
If this can be changed on Rare’s part at all… please do!

Because if we’re in battle or conducting a clandestine operation, I’d rather my opponents not hear every move we’re making.
Also if I’m having a chill conversation with my friends about their personal lives, I’d rather a tucker not hear every word.
The thing I was genuinely looking forward to was the ability to hear another pirate on a speaking trumpet communicating and negotiating from afar. And being able to chat with fellow random pirates at the touch of the button.
This is a devastating let down in its current form.

So you're solo but still don't use game-comm and that somehow in your mind means I'm wrong about you being anti-social. Good argument, bro........... NOT!!!!
And again, because it seems you struggle to read properly...
I play in a party, when with a crew
I don’t play in a party when solo, means I can hear and talk to other people
[mod edit]
@crowedhunter Call it metagaming. Call it whatever you want. Being able to strategize privately in the heat of a quality PvP battle is huge.
Honestly, it wouldn't be so bad if they made it so that the speech-to-text radius was considerably smaller. It seems to be twice (or more) than that of the voice proximity radius.
That said, it's not debatable that the voice quality of in-game versus Xbox chat or Discord is substantially worse. I don't know how it's possible that it's as stark of a difference in quality as it is, but kudos to you for achieving it, Rare.

I don't know if the ranges are different, just that the volume drop off for the audio makes it harder to hear whereas the text is always 100% visible. It might be more accurate if the text reduced in opacity or something the further away it was to mimic the audio, but I don't know if that's possible.

@sweetsandman It is both metagaming and a huge advantage, yes.
Also, that's a very good point about speech to text radius. I've noticed that too. The quality issue I don't think is really as big of a thing as much as the metagaming. It's not like discord makes your friends' voices sound like heavenly music. You can not be missing out on much, dude.
It's not about missing out on anything. It's about noticably worse quality.
If a business you called regularly offered 2 separate phone numbers to call into...and the only difference was that one was worse quality than the other...would you ever call the worse quality number? No.

I still don't understand why Rare doesn't have a toggle for "crew chat"/"open chat".
If they made it easy... More people would probably talk in game.
The on game comms quality is still poor compared to Xbox party chat and discord, but it's more about the privacy when we want it.
Please Rare, give us this ability.
I just want to hear what’s happening in the world around me again. Thank you.

You have to push a button to chat!? 🤣
I absolutely ❤ game chat, and use it regularly (and on Xbox with Controller only servers, no less). I find it incredibly immersive and more of a challenge. So what if others can spy on me? That's part of the fun! And if some random pirate overhears something personal, unless it's identifiable information (which anyone would be dumb to share in an online environment anyways), they're probably going to either forget about it, or possibly even sympathize with it - I can see it now! As the mysterious pirate steps out of the brush, brandishing a cutlass: "I'm sorry to hear about how your chicken dinner gave you indigestion and heartburn - would you like me to put a stop to that for you?"
It adds to the experience, no matter how you look at - and that was entirely the point.
