We need a better mechanism for joining a friend's crew.

  • I've recently started playing with a friend, and we can't seem to figure out how to join someone's crew when they're already sailing. We both have "Allow friends to join" turned on, but we have yet to successfully crew up when one of us is already on the seas (For example, if I'm halfway through an Athena voyage, and he logs on and wants to join me, he can't. We've tried using the game bar to invite, but so far the only way we have successfully crewed up is if the player who is already sailing quits out to the menu (losing all treasure and voyage progress) and form an entirely new crew.

If there IS a "Join Already Sailing Crew" function, it must be hidden somehow, because we haven't been able to find it. Why can't Rare just add a "Join Crew" button to the "invite Friends" popup if the friend is already sailing, to allow you to join up?

I've watched Youtube videos of players joining like this, but they never show HOW they do this. They just say "Hey, Fred has a fort of the damned up, I'm going to go and help him"

  • @redwoodtheelf you can use the game bar or the xbox companion app, the gamebar is needed if one of you are on steam. find your friends name in the friends list right click and join game.

  • I don't have any issues joining on friends or friends joining on me. I just use the gamebar and accept invites or join players through the right click menu on their profile.

Do you get an error message at all?

  • @redwoodtheelf
There is an invite friend option in game: Escape -- Crew.

In the xbox companion, when you click on someone's profile, after a while you get to see that he's sailing the seas, clicking on that and you have the option to join that person's game.

Nope. Clicked the accept check box, and nothing at all happened. Repeatedly. I'm on a PC and he's on a console, does that cause problems with joining existing voyages?

Is the Xbox Comanion the thing that comes up when you hold down the windows button and hit "G", or is it something else? Because that's what we've been trying to use.

    Invaluable with Windows 10

    Join party
    Join game
    Start party
    Invite to game
    Invite to party

    Etc..

Only if he has selected the cross play opt out option in the settings. If he has that selected then you can't join his game. I've noticed that this selection also can cause problems between Xbox players joining games - I can't join my friend's game if he has that option selected and I have selected play will all players (I'm also on Xbox), leading to one of us having to change the matchmaking settings in order to join the other's game. Not as much of an issue now for us since we both now play on the real servers.

He says it's turned off, and we can play together, but ONLY if we form the crew before entering the seas.

Well something is amiss there as I've had PC friends join my game with no issues, but it has been at least a month or so since I've done that.

  • @redwoodtheelf
wagst already replied, but I've had a few times that invites ended up in the new (?) Xbox app (that is to replace the console companion), instead of the Xbox console companion or the Game Bar (Windows+G).

  • It could be something having to do with 1 or both of your privacy settings via XBL. Try looking into that.

Yeh the new Xbox app works really well too. We have an Xbox here and it just makes it seamless for our two PC's to join in to an Xbox game or party with either of these two apps installed.

  • You don't say what release of SoT you're using.

The Steam release requires the existing crew to send an invite, where as the MicroSoft store release your able to join a player using the xBox app [or gamebar].
Assuming everything is working properly as the xBox app can do stupid things sometimes. I often play with xBox players while I'm on PC.

But this sounds exactly like he plays just on XBox server...I'm on XBox, my girlfriend sometimes join via PC...as soon as she opens my profile through the XBox app she can join...
