Eyepatch Adjustments.

  • I read about irl pirates using eyepatches to quickly adjust to light differences.

There are numerous theories on the reason why pirates wore eyepatches.

The question is, what was the definite reason for wearing an eyepatch?

One common theory is that they must have lost an eye in the battle, hence the reason for the eyepatch. While this makes sense, that fact is not enough to explain the prevalence of the eyepatches in the pirate culture.

Another recent theory is that pirates wore eyepatches to protect their dark-adapted vision. This theory is very interesting, as it could apply to situations when pirates needed to get underdeck from the deck of the ship.

This rapid transition from the light environment (deck of the ship) to the dark environment (underdeck of the ship) impacts the vision, as the eye needs at least 25 minutes to adapt from daylight condition to low-light environment.

Why not add this to the game?

  • That gives pirates using eyepatches an unfair advantage. Not everybody wants their pirate using an eyepatch as it may not look good or not fit their pirate's story. It just doesn't make sense to give players using a cosmetic an unfair advantage.
