I think it would be a good idea for Rare to add a "take all" option to supply barrels.
Currently, you press "X" to access the barrel's interior, then for each item in the barrel you can either press "X" to take one item from the stack or press "A" to take all items from the stack (or as many as you can carry). If the barrel has multiple items within, you'll need to press "A" multiple times to get everything. Most regular players have developed muscle memory to do this quickly, but it still takes 1-2 seconds to grab everything.
Veteran players remember that it didn't use to be like this; when SoT first launched, barrels didn't even have a menu; you pressed "X" to take an item from the barrel or "Y" to store an item (check 7:49 in this two-year old video to see an example). Rare changed to the current system when they introduced cursed cannonballs.
Here's what I propose: when you approach a supply barrel, pressing "Y" takes everything that you can carry from that barrel without putting you in a menu. The trade-off for this increased speed is that the system doesn't selectively pick items (maybe you want firebombs instead of blunderbombs or you want to trade your bananas for better food), making it ideal for quickly stocking up your ship (you're making multiple trips and want everything), but less useful for sail-by resupplies (when you want to prioritize the best items before taking the mermaid back).
I'm not a programmer, but this seems pretty easy to implement; the game already detects when you can't carry any more of an item and makes the remaining items transparent (such as when you're trying to grab more food when you already have 5). The only reason I can think of to not do this is for balance reasons (it takes time and distracts you when you resupply during fights).
