This game is going to turn into Sea of Thieves Fortress 2.

  • It's a shame. I held high praise for Rare and when I heard microtransactions were coming to Sea of Thieves I was very worried. When I heard it was pets I was like okay, that's not so bad assuming the price is okay. But I'm seeing minute discount bundles for only certain pets which requires waiting until it eventually rolls around to the colour you want, I'm seeing a bundle of emotes that cost £8, and ship cosmetics which cost just around £15. Money is not an issue for me, but that's steep and worrisome when prior ship cosmetics were free.

Of course, the kids who have grown up on microtransactions know that this is the norm. Optional is not truly optional, unless you want to feel left out - psychological manipulation 101. Very disappointed in the money-grabbing here. The prices are messed up and they Rare/Microsoft use that very typical psychological manipulation technique of having some of your paid currency left over so you feel tempted to buy more just to buy something else to set it your remaining balance to zero.

Rare is a business, it's strings pulled by Microsoft. I suppose this was inevitable but just you wait until this game gets ruined where it starts getting crammed with extras here and there (Emporium or otherwise) and evolves into something that is a far cry from what it once was. Then it won't be the unique game it set out to be.

Had those prices for ship cosmetics been lower and less of a blatant money-grab... £15 for ship a ship set...., this would be less of an issue. However, it's not merely that but the direction that this game is heading.

I'm not here to start a argument amongst pirates, but I love this game and I've seen game after game ruined by similar things in the past (all the ones I've loved before).

The Creation Club-esque Creator Crew is worrisome... I'm getting flashbacks of the shamelessness of CSGO Workshop skin creation.

    Edit: prices.

  • Not arguing and not disagreeing.

People need money bro. I need money, you need money. It’s just the way the world works.

I’m old too so let me throw in some history too...

Back in the day we had magazines. Magazines would hype the sheet out of a Gamez we’d buy it for 49.99-59.99

Magazines would review the game...30 days after release! We were constantly buying sheet games.

There was no internet and no way to Complain.

Then came subscriptions. You had to buy the game at Full Retail and then subscribe for a monthly fee of 14.99 - 19.99 a month.

This, what they are doing? In the grand scheme of things. It’s alright and probably one of the kindest ways to go about business.

Hell if you really want to go back we bought games off a piece of paper at Toys R Us! Yea, that’s it! Hand drawn cover art and a name! There were no reviews, no videos, no pictures! These games were like 50 bucks!!! You had to grab a piece of paper and stand in line!
9 out of 10 Times the game sucked balls! Double Dribble? Vampire for Intelevison (and that was one of the better ones! )

Hot arss mess. You like this pirate game? Throw the dudes some money. Skip your caramel late with skin milk on Tuesday and give these guys 7 bucks.

  • @glannigan I like the cut of your Jib.

  • Talk to me when finishing a quest gives you a chest you need to buy a key to unlock, and its pure RNG on what you get

    They provide no benefits.

Optional truly is optional. Your fear of being left out on videogame cosmetics isn't up to anyone else to control.

  • @tre-oni said in This game is going to turn into Sea of Thieves Fortress 2.:

Well that ain’t gonna happen cause I’m a PL and have never dug up a treasure chest, I’ve never solved a riddle, I’ve never transported a chicken. I got to PL by logging in. Laughing. Making friends and PVP’n in Adventure Mode.

I think that’s the difference in me and a lot of other folks.

    I don’t “Grind”. If
I’m tired and have 130,00 worth of loot. I’ll just hit the power button. This game everyone complains about allowed me to be a PL by logging in. Playing my way and never asking me for a dime.

  • It's all good man. I bought coins just to support RARE. I bought an orange & black bird named Popeye. I only feed him chicken 🍗 legs! I'm sitting on the rest of my funds until something nice comes along. Being that I currently own every ship set from every event to this point I don't see much of a need to buy any. This game is awesome (minus the black screen glitches) and will be for a long time. Peace and have a great time sailing.

Make no mistake. Nothing they have released works for me. Zero interest (I was 21 when Banjo hit and thought it was Trash).

That being said. They release something I want? I’ll drop a 120 bucks like it’s a Thursday night bar tab.

It'll never happen. Which is exactly why the way Rare does MTX is a thousand times better than TF2 lol

Rare has been the best with this so far. Everybody will always have a problem price wise, but what they've provided experience wise, and enjoyment wise as you seem to have pointed out and have gotten out of the game, and they have asked for in return, OPTIONALLY, is more than reasonable compared to any of these dramatic MTX comparisons

  • As far as “Creator Crew” look man I’m 45 years old and I just can’t come to grips with this whole

“Watch other people play a game you have”

My kids do this and I just want to punch them in the face.

I click the “gem” hit broad cast. Played with my crew for like 10 minutes and was given everything the “Creator” Crew got exclusive access too.

All their asking is “hey dudes help us make our game more popular”

Sheet , have you all played a Ubisoft game? That sheet wants your social and a DNA sample just so you can see your friends online!

You could not ask for a game developer to do business in a way better than what Rare is doing.

  • Okay perhaps I reacted a bit harshly. Just to note, I have already bought stuff in SoT, but I am worried of where that will lead. So many times in the past it all starts out meaning well and progresses into a show of overly expensive tid bits and while people say optional is optional... technically, yes, psychologically (for a large majority), no. As I said before, I've seen many games in the past go this route and it sucked.

I understand people must get paid but as I expressed my concern before, how far does it go? Cosmetic ship multipacks costing £39.99. Exclusive weapon skins? That dope skin that you can never earn but some whale drops extra £ on it and gets it immediately.

Glannigan, I get you. I'm actually only in my early 30s but I knew how things were before the internet. I didn't really get into the magazine thing though.

I'm also worried because those who invest in a game they enjoy, which they are perfectly entitled to by the way, will be biased towards it even if the system changes for the worst. We'll see how things pan out 6-12 months from now.

Maybe if these microtransactions contributed to fixing... I don't know... the lag spikes that are so common in this game, then it'd be more worthwhile.

Also, I want my Parakeet sitting on my shoulder. :)

To be on your shoulder - in excusable. I can’t argue that man.

  • You feel left out if you don’t have the cosmetics.....

    HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa

    Sorry

    HaHAhHaHaHaHaHahaa

    Woo that’s funny.

This. And for what it's worth, here's what I think:

Back in my day when you bought a game, it was yours. You could do whatever you wanted to do with it; play it to death or lend it to friends after rewriting the code so the game could not be completed - thank you for the memories, Ultima III. You could say whatever you wanted to say about it without the fear that you might be banned from seeing your friends again. You could take it out the back and shoot it with your grandfather's .22 ... okay, we never actually did that one, but it sounds like fun.

And you know what? If the game was no good, you could take it back for a complete refund. I know you can still do that one, but it was a lot easier back in the day.

Games these days ask of us as much as they give to us. The very least they can do is work. I enjoy SoT very much. I have bought it for three of my friends. That's the last Rare will see of my money until it's Thursday night at the bar.

  • It would be awful to spawn into an open crew and be bullied for not having the hot new cosmetics that all the cool kids at school have. It'd be at least 10 years of counselling to get over that level of social shame.

Wait... I haven't gone to school in over 30 years, whose kids are these? Get off my lawn, you michievous wee-uns!!

  • @khaifx

With regards to your feelings on Sea of Thieves Microtransactions

I really don't understand the logic you're presenting here. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but your entire argument can be summarized as:

"The reason I feel I'm being forced to spend money on microtransactions because not having these cosmetics will make me feel left out."

If there were loot boxes and extra power mechanics locked to the Pirate Emporium, you'd have a point. But everything is purely cosmetic and does not give anyone any leverage to their gameplay experience.

Sorry but I think the feeling you're having is something you've imposed upon yourself.

    About Creator Crew

Creator Crew is a great idea in theory.

There is currently some behavior from Rare that is concerning me - At the recent TwitchCon panel, I noticed the point they kept hammering on when they talked about their future plans was "how do we make the next feature more watchable, how do we make Arena more watchable"

It sounds like they really have their minds set on how they can make the game look better on Twitch or Mixer. And I fear that if they spend too much of their energy on that approach, then Sea of Thieves will become a game that only belongs to streamers, and truly meaningful and heartfelt expansions to the game will take a backseat...

We as a community need to watch closely and be prepared to hold them accountable if things start to take a really bad turn here. Content Creators are a really positive force in the community (for the most part) and Creator Crew has the potential to be something really positive, but Rare need to keep their priorities in check here and not lay it on to thick with catering to content creators.

Isn't there some whole thing going on right now with some streamer basically displaying the ability to have players banned under the guise of streamsniping by simply messaging Rare?

I'm personally pretty concerned about the way Rare is focusing so hard, on trying to appeal to streamers and turn everything into a streamer haven.

  • I love RARE but i do hate Microsoft by various reasons.
Im still against the microtransactions garbage but that's how the gaming industry is nowadays.
I wont buy anything as of yet and i hope i never will.

    This absolutely this!

  • The PvP is sure on par with TF2.

  • If you are on about the Bear and Bird Ship cosmetics I dont know where you are getting £15 from... its £20-40 it is RIDICULOUSLY over priced. A massive cash grab and a middle finger up at Banjo-Kazooie fans.

For some perspective. Banjo-Kazooie as PLAYABLE characters in smash bros complete with a ground up remake of spiral mountain and a bucket of remixed songs costs less than £5.
I just preordered Ghostbusters remastered today and it cost me £20. A full game, for the amount Rare want for a SHIP cosmetic. Is is absolutely ludicrous.

I'm still shocked they haven't addressed or amended this.

  • @biter-wylie why is that funny. This is a game where the only thing you can spend gold on, is cosmetics, so how can they justify having the best ones behind a pay wall.

  • "This game is going to turn into Sea of Thieves Fortress 2."

I'm confused by your thread title. You're comparing SoT to Team Fortress 2 as if that's a bad thing? The game which has had a very stable user base for the past 7 years? And still has a higher user base than Rocket League on PC for example? That one yeah? Despite all of their cosmetic choices you can buy with IRL money, the game remains successful after all this time.

I'm fairly certain Rare will be delighted if the SoT user base remains the same for 7 years. Especially if the current amount of users is good for them.

If anything, I'd love SoT to become more like TF2 in terms of cosmetics. Continue to provide standard cosmetics via the NPC shops and have additional revenue to support the game via IRL purchases.

Sitting here waiting for them to add movement emotes so we can conga round the islands! xD

Oh, and a nice hat with some flame effects please Mr Neate!

This is a common misconception - in all cases of media, you never actually owned the content itself. That was owned by the creator of said media. What you actually owned and paid for was the medium it was delivered on - VHS, CD, DVD, Blu-ray, etc. Even with digital, you don't actually own it - you're just paying for the right to view/listen to it.

Mind you, I'm referring to U.S. law here, so it may be different depending on your country of origin, but I can't imagine it would be very different.

  • @galactic-geek Yeah, I think you are right. Technically. And certainly with everything being digital downloads now, it is a lot easier for the owners of intellectual property to enforce their rights. My guess is Lord British would not have approved of us rewriting the code to his game so it couldn't be finished - but back then, there was not much he could do about it. Nor could most intellectual property owners stop us from lending/borrowing games, or books, records, etc.

Digital has certainly made it harder to do anything like that anymore, and maybe that is just.
