Are boat lights useless??

  • We all mostly know how easy it is to spot a ship on the horizon from really far away at night, since you see pretty much all their lights on.

I understand that the light in the sloop (on top of the map table) can be helpful to be able to actually see at night, but:

what about the lights on front of the ship and the one next to the steering wheel? the lights on front of the ship literally do not help at all basically and you can see pretty well anyway without them at night.

sometimes you will actually see the lights from far away even at daytime. I turn them all off and you see pretty much everything so... maybe they are just decoration? or is the map supposed to be darker at night

    what are your thoughts

  • Yeah other than signalling to other boats, the ones at the bow don't seem to have much purpose. Would love to have darker nights or fog where you actually need them.

  • @xcalypt0x Love the idea of fog, maybe some days or nights just have fog kinda of like the storm having big waves blocking your vision.

  • @salazar-armando i keep lights on so ships can find me :D it's a good way to lure ships instead of searching for them.

  • Maybe they'll come into use if shadow skeletons get on your ship somehow.

  • @realbadhor5e good strategy actually, you get some guy thinking he can attack you and you turn it around with the good old bait haha awesome suggestion.

  • U just look like a new friend of @CappJackSparrow

  • We use them to signal other boats, but as to seeing with them... Not really.

  • I switch off all the lamps except both inside the deck, map one goes off as I can see perfectly the map on night.

Are those two lights in the deck visible from afar?

  • @salazar-armando boat lights can help you see things better

  • @salazar-armando Keep them off below deck and release 100 snakes lol

Yep! Depends on your intentions. If your a Single man Sloop trying to slip through the darkness ...OFF. If your a 4 man Galleon looking for a fight...ON.

  • @salazar-armando How about luring others to come and attack you?
    Also great for parties! :D

  • I turn them on if I'm loitering at an outpost, pirate-spotting. Just to make it clear I'm not hiding or camping.

  • Hello,

    @Salazar-Armando @xCALYPT0x

Fog is something most people would like to see in-game I believe. I'm not talking about distant low clouds or 'light fog', but thick fog, 'à couper au couteau' as we say.

I've seen several threads about fog on both this forum and reddit. New moons, slightly darker nights also came up several times over the last few weeks.

    Summon the fog ? =p

    Cheers,

    FRIEND?!

  • I sometimes like keeping the lights on at night just to draw other players into conflict.

  • I usually turn them off, but I did notice at one point it actually helps to see alot better when your in a fight, there was 1 guy who snuck onto my ship and he was hard to see because it was so dark...having the lights on woulda made him way easiar to see...maybe its smart to turn on the lights while engaging in combat

  • If you're experienced at naval combat, leave them on to lure other players who will likely think you're new to the game

  • @starquest y did it hv 2 b sneks

  • The bow lanterns I have found some use for with keeping a landmark (rock or visible outpost) in relation to the boat while sailing through a storm - when your compass becomes useless, the lanterns come in handy to see where the storm is pushing your boat - again - provided there is a reference point.

Other uses are signalling crewmates if your ship sinks and treasure is awaiting pickup - crew splits with one going back to get a new ship and returning - helps to know if friend or foe.

  • @realbadhor5e I feel like that is the actual purpose, sometimes you want to be found.

  • @salazar-armando As soon as I board my sloop, I put out out all the lights except the ones in the hold.

I can even see the map just fine in the dark

  • Personally I think there should be a clear risk to having your lights off at night that replaces the risk of being spotted by other players with something else, e.g. an occasional small chance for a skeleton (or perhaps some new mob if more are added in future) to spawn in the dark spots on your boat, so if you're trying to be stealthy with all lanterns turned off then you also have to keep an eye out for a skeleton spawning on your boat somewhere and killing you at the wheel because you weren't paying attention!

  • They don't help you see where you're going but they do let you see where you are on your ship.

  • Checking the map at night requires the lamp to be on. Really hard to see at night without the lamp.

  • @cappjacksparrow mine was irony of course!

  • I leave all of mine on when I play the sloop so I can get a bigger ship to chase me. Then I find another ship and have them fallow me to another bigger ship and then I sit back and watch them kill each other.
