Our crew started saying green, yellow, and red to indicate distance of another ship a couple years ago. So “green galleon southwest” means they are quite far off and not a threat. “north sloop red” means they are an island away or less. Where the lines for yellow are have been an issue sometimes.
I use this method too, but with the quick chat:
"They're far away!"
"They're close!"
"Enemy here!"
