Tone Down the Lightning

  • Last night my experience in SoT was rather frustrating. I spawned in the tavern at Ancient Spire Outpost. The moment I stepped outside the tavern I was struck by lightning and was subsequently struck 3-4 more times BEFORE I EVEN MADE IT TO MY SHIP! After my trip to Davey Jones' Locker I spawned on the deck of my ship and was immediately struck by lightning. I began searching the island for supplies thinking that had to be over for a while. Nope, I was struck again every 5-10 seconds resulting in death. When I respawned on my boat it was nearly full of water because I presume it had been struck by lightning. I repaired the ship, but the moment I stepped out to the helm I was struck three times in rapid succession.

As a pirate legend, this was incredibly frustrating for me. I can only imagine the frustration that a NEWCOMER to the game might feel. I get it that the lightning has been ramped up for FotD, but this is a little excessive. The lightning should still feel somewhat natural, not like a targeted attack pummeling you over and over again.

If this had been the first time I ever played and I didn't know about FotD, I would probably drop this game in a heartbeat.

This is temporary during the Festival of the Damned:

Lightning Strikes - Prepare for (even more) treacherous weather conditions! Players who brave a storm will be able to tempt fate with an increased chance of lightning strikes being reported across the world. This additional peril is forecast to last for the duration of the Festival of the Damned before conditions return to normal again.

  • Decrease the amount of precious metal on your legendary clothes, that might help.
    Giggle.

  • Hey mate!
The lightning strike rate has been turned up for the Festival of the Darned event.
It'll return to normal once the event ends.

Edit: I got beaten to the punch!

  • @sgt-palooggoo I strike faster than the lightning 👀

  • @Skulliah and @Sgt-Palooggoo I don't know if the OP has been edited, but the last line does say that he knows of the FotD.

I do have to say that even though temporary, the whole thing is very off putting, especially when spawning into a storm or if chased into one - becomes impossible at the moment to steer the ship!

  • This was in the latest patch notes.

This was needed or it would take a lot of time just to get a white Flame of Fate.

  • @sshteeve Thank you. Yes it was in my original post. These guys evidently didn't read the entire thing :-)

@Sgt-Palooggoo @Skulliah I understand why they increased the lightning frequency, but the point I was trying to make is that the experience I had would REALLY turn me off if I was a new sailor and wasn't aware that it is only temporary. It is very excessive in its current state and I'm not sure that was a good decision.

  • @jonaldinho I think it could be a little more effective at killing than it was, whilst not being at the point where if you are in a storm, you cannot control your ship without dying!

There is a balance that needs to be found, especially if we are going to have the commendations stay in the game - folk will want to die to lightning at some point in the future so it can't go back to being a simple annoyance!

  • I like the addition of lantern colors but idk why they are earned through dying.

Would be cooler if you had to catch lightning with your lantern raised to get a white flame, collect enough snake venom in your lantern (or in a new potion vial item, to then be added to your lantern)

Let us earn them while still alive lol..

  • @a-cranky-eskimo It's a nice way to include the ferryman in a Halloween based event in the end when all is said and done.

I'm glad that we have something on there now that makes for a conversation, or a little interaction.
I'm also glad that the Ferryman now speaks!

  • @sshteeve still they could have made it so that getting them handed to you after death is an option, and earning them while alive is too. Maybe give the death ones just enough commendations for the items, and then have the “legendary” commendations be to earn them in ways while alive.

Then if there was a title exclusive to unlocking the commendations the harder way, people would have a cool exclusive to go for, or not.

I get the connection for halloween and the ferryman, but this isnt the update to spawning many of us were talking about with updates to the ferry. It would be like if they put a hat on the mermaid teleporters and called that an update.

Not trying to complain, i have always asked for lantern colors but i wish there was more to it than dying over and over for just commendations. Something like new ghosts enemies or even adding zombie looking skeletons with names of people from the community/forum/alpha as a funny way to include the community, etc. as much as everything in the game already does need more variety and improvements, would be nice to see assets being added other than cosmetics, that actually add to the sandbox like the speaking trumpet. Lantern colors do this i guess i just wish they would have an event that isnt designed to be accomplished by everyone, and not by killing ourselves lol..

  • @jonaldinho Hehe, that was some bad luck to spawn in to. Personally, if I spawn in and there's a storm over the outpost, I just log out and start again.

That would be even more prevalent during this event. Fortunately in a couple of weeks they'll return to there normal strike rate!

Well I've already completed all of the commendations, so I guess I'll just play Red Dead until this event is over. :-)

  • @goedecke-michel sir you sound like a troll in this topic

  • @jonaldinho it'll be don soon

  • step 1: stay in the tavern
    step 3: profit

  • @marsmayflower Except you aren't safe indoors either. I was constantly getting struck when I was trying to talk to the different vendors at one outpost. Even being just temporarily increased, this is silly. I really, really want to love this game but good god they have missed the mark on so many aspects.

  • OK, toning down the lightning took it too far. I entered the storm three times with 20% hp, and couldn't manage to get hit once for the commendation.

I got Kraken'd, Pirate shipped, and eaten by sharks, not one lightning strike.

  • @q-WOMBAT-p is right, it is horrible.
I'm going to use some of op's wording to show how far it went the other way.

Last night my experience in SoT was rather frustrating. I duo'd with my friend who needed to get each light. I began searching for a storm after getting the easy green and blue, knowing it was the white that would be hardest. Oh how little did I know.
It took over 2 hours of sailing in storms with him at a sliver of life to get hit. Doing nothing else other than him in crows nest, on the wheel staying still, holding every object we could think of.. nothing would get him hit. Shooting him up into the storm, sitting in the sea, on land.
    Nothing worked.

As an almost pirate legend, this was incredibly frustrating for me. I can only imagine the frustration that a NEWCOMER to the game might feel. I get it that the lightning has been toned down due to complaints like these, but this is a little excessive. The lightning should still feel somewhat natural, like if you are holding metal in the sea, you should be a conduit. The longer you are in a storm, the more chance you get (pseudo random chance). Make it so if they are holding a metal object they get struck at an increased rate, if they are not (hands empty/wood/banana/etc) they rarely get struck.

Rare, I know people complain about volcanoes hitting them, about lightning hitting them, but remember, they can learn to steer clear of things. That is truly more like what the sea would hold, instead of "scary looking" volcanoes, and "threatening" lightning, you would have actual pirate killing, ship wrecking dangers out there.

  • Tbh if I spawn at an outpost in a storm I jump servers, cba with that hassle first thing in the game, you should of done the same you had nothing to loose anyway
