Meg Despawns

  • Is it just me or does the meg despawn too easily?

Me and a friend were playing and came across the crested, chased it and engaged. It circled a few times, charged us, swam off, we went and patched holes then went and chased it to engage again, got a few more shots then it swam off and despawned. even in open waters.

Is there a reason it does that in open water and does anyone have tips to get quick meg kills?

Thought I'd post a thread on it, not sure if it's a bug or it's intentional by design. They're fun to fight though I will admit

  • Main cause in the last couple of seasons is they changed how other player's megs react to you. They won't stick around and they leave, super unfortunate for a few reasons but that's the way it is now

Once in a while a server is super laggy and it messes with megs, it'll get them to act weird/inconsistent

Main thing for any of the emergent pve spawns is start hittin' em with cannonballs quick and early, get that head start which keeps you in control of the situation, rather than kind of dilly dallying around with them. High pressure early and keep it consistent for pretty much any fight.

When you say "chased" it, that sounds to me like you wandered upon another's spawn which is why it didn't commit to your ship and eventually took off.

  • Soon as you hear it and decide to fight it, hit the anchor. I've had quite a few megs just swim off, haven't had one do that yet since I just started anchoring to come to an immediate halt

It's almost always because of proximity to an island or rocks, or other simultaneous events overlapping. It's sometimes easy to miss clipping the "hit box" of these environmental things when preoccupied with whether or not to engage.

Is that why? I've been getting so irritated by megs running off. I'm trying to get my chef commendations here!

yeah, when they worked on megs so they spawn in more areas that's when it started.

probably cost people some ghosts. If someone leaves the area or sinks their meg spawn will wander a bit and then leave.

Without focusing on a new ship it's very very difficult to kill one before it despawns. Possible but very unlikely, especially for brig/galleon megs.

  • @wolfmanbush This was my exact thought (losing a shrouded ghost) the last time this happened to me. I would be so upset.

  • If I lose a shrouded ghost I could become one of interpol's most wanted

Using other ships as a meg spawn resource used to be a big part of my hunting strat but with how they operate now I don't do it nearly as much because I don't wanna end up in that scenario.

I still sail shrine boats away from the shrine and use the boat to get another meg here and there and then return the ship to the shrine before they return lol but I can't rely on other situations anymore.

    A ghost hunting tip

Don't burn bridges, you never know when you might need them to anchor for their meg lol

  • @wolfmanbush I gave up searching after they changed the meg spawn, it was more accurate before.

I still have to kill 9 of the ancients so I always keep an eye out, I pass through open areas, hopefully he will appear in one of these.

My fear is losing it due to a bug or disconnection

  • @necronikolai13 appreciate that tip. Thanks to this I was able to get my first meg today!
