sailing east vs west

  • First off, i do want to mention that the discord you have is incredibly unhelpful and has the 'dogpile' mentality which everyone who has power seems to enforce. My simple question with over 900 hours played (because apparently that matters) why is it when you sail West, you drift, but when you sail East it's a straight arrow? Anytime you're sailing any direction west, you'll drift, but east you won't? there's not tides in the game and this isn't a one off occurrence. There's probably a better way to word this but im beyond frustrated by the system and just want to know what the reason is.

It's got to do with unseen sailing mechanics... I can't seem to find the video right now, but there's something out there about how NW/SE you sail the most straight and NE/SW you sail the most crooked (or the other way around).
It could just be that the waves seem to be moving in the same direction all the time for you... Bad in one direction, good in another.
There's this legendary sailing moment that I only encounter once in a while - when your ship stays on top of a crest as it moves. It makes for some extremely fast sailing! Maybe you're just getting the reverse too often... Here's the perfect sailing clip:

  • @grumpyw01f after much much frustration i really do appreciate your reply and your input. To me it really seems like if you sail west you will drift vs if you sail east. Thanks for the clip

  • The waves do move in the same direction for everyone at all times. NW to SE

  • Fascinating I never noticed This. I do spend the vast majority of my time hunting in the West as it’s just prettier.

Hate going east as it’s so ugly and gets even uglier past FOTD/Reapers.

The waves go in one direction at all times. In one direction you are sailing against the waves and in another direction you are sailing with the waves.

Plain and simple. Depending on wind, position of sails, if full speed not full speed, you will drift more or less depending on numbering of factors but major point is in one direction going against waves, in one direction going with waves.

It is relatively realistic as ships do drift thanks to the waves, albeit probably not as severely as SoT but it does happen. Its their way of making sure someone has to be on the wheel and an just auto pilot everywhere and if you notice you still drift no matter the direction, just one direction you tend to drift more than the other.

  • It's more of the N to S pull of the waves that does it. While the waves do indeed go NW to SE, because you're going against the waves heading west, they push the front of the boat to the S, whereas, if you're heading E with the waves, the pull isn't as strong because there's next to no resistance as the waves pass by, only hitting the rear of your boat.
