What is missing i Sea of thieves? What is most urgent to be put in the game to keep and increase the playerbase?

  • I love the game, love how Rare treats us fans/players. Allthough I feel the reward for grinding is a bit empty. I have 1,9 million gold and I dont care too much about skins. I would like to spend the gold on something meaningful for the gameplay.

Now I know Rare want the game to be balanced and my ideas probably will be thrown in the can before you can say "P00op deck". (I actually wasn't allowd to write p00p)
I've been thinking about Npc Crewmates.
At each outpost you can hire Npc crewmates for your ship. You can choose what kind of a crewmate you want. One that focuses on fishing and cooking. One that focus on keeping a lookout and stocking the ship. One that focuses on defending the ship from boardes and shooting cannonballs. These npc costs gold and they eat your food. If they die you have to go to the outpost to hire new ones.
This could help solo players, and also people playing the story.

I'm thinking that you can have the original crewsize plus the npc:
    Sloop:2+1npc
    Brig:3+1npc
    Galleon: 4+2npc

These are just ideas. Dont think rare will consider this even for a second :) just sharing my thoughts. Didn't bother spellchecking.

  • I hear the "I've got loads of gold and would like to buy something meaningful argument a lot" So for some it has to be an issue.
I guess there's only a short number of reasons to buy something in this game which would be worth the amount of gold you're talking about.

    • A homestead only you have a key for (Can't imagine this happening)
    • A whole new purchasable boat type (Can't see that happening either unless it gave you zero benefit over other players, it just looked a little more luxurious on the inside) but even something like this would have unforeseen benefits. Like the stealth tucker would stand out more if the inside of the boat was golden.
    • So then you're stuck with skins which a lot of people don't care about...

So what can people spend their money on? Starting permanent alliances, resetting their character look, other yet to see cosmetics, I don't know.

Ncp crewmates could be cool. You'd have to give them commands through the speech radial. I think people wouldn't agree with NPC crewmates shooting cannonballs, the skelly NPC's are waaaaay more accurate than most players and they don't have eyes or brains

  • @sharktoothjake
No, this would be an advantage for people with gold. Maybe cosmetics you can buy for you and your ship that dissappear when you die/sink.

  • @blazedrake100 The problem for me is that I don't care much for cosmetics.

  • replay-ability is what the game needs right? Well then that's what needs to be emphasized.More voyages like tall tales would be cool, but have them so that every time you do them, the mini games or puzzles in them, switch around. Add more mini games like bulls eye shooting range, platform traversing while drunk, ship evasion across dangerously littered rocky waters, so and so.

  • @sharktoothjake Here is a post I had done on new ways to spend your money: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/91951/new-ways-to-spend-your-money

It involves buying ships, a "home" for each pirate and some other things.

  • Game doesn’t need “replay ability” just playability. Rare have done a wonderful job in creating the illusion that this is a big world. Pack all the land masses together and it’s really tiny for a game of this type. Now, consider how limited NPCs are, Sure, skellys spawn all over but it’s the same waves time and again. Only the location changes. Chests are simply co-ordinates. There is so much room for expansion and creativity it’s crazy.

As a developer the limitations are talent, cash, inclination and corporate go-ahead.

Now, what to spend gold on. Realistically it can only be visuals. However, luminescents, metallics, special textures - and on and on. They haven’t scratched the surface. As has been said elsewhere though, they’ve yet to complete existing sets so.............

  • @sharktoothjake
Then gold will never matter for you, because rare won't add advantages for gold.

Playability is meaningless without replay value. Once content is accomplished, without replay value, there will be no reason to return to the game. Even more enemy types are part of the replay value. In fact everything you mentioned are problems with the game that doesn't allow for much replay value. Things like limited NPC, treasure discovery , etc, etc... This game is extremely repetitive, additional content that is repetitive is not the answer. For the game to bring people in and keep its player base, the devs will need to bring a sense of randomness to voyages, enemies, and everything else.

  • Something to insure the servers are always at max pop.

I wouldn’t mind migrating 2-3 times a session knowing I was always on a server with 24 other players 😬

  • So, you want NPCs to play the game for you?

    Not my cup of tea...

  • @red0demon0

We’re arguing semantics. Replay value to me means playing something for a second time. I understand your application of the word and your right. We both agree 100% about the game and it’s repetition. Theres been no attempt to try to disguise the repetition (other games do this) and the AI are very limited in their actions. Why no stealth in the game at all?
I’d have thought that during the earliest of playthroughs while testing, someone would have flagged repetition as an issue.
Perhaps if the game hadn’t been lifted straight from the pages of Pirates of the Caribbean we’d have something a little more unique.

  • @SharkToothJake

Allthough I feel the reward for grinding is a bit empty.

You made it about the grind?
You like many others dont understand Sea of Thieves.
You play for rewards, gold, commendations, titles and to hear the bingo bell.

I instead play for the adventure, the stories and the glory.

See Rare has made this game for players who play games, not for gamers who game systems, work off / grind levels to get rewarded.

The suggestion shows you havent understand it otherwise you wouldnt want meaning for your gold and make advantages buyable or support solo slooping.

  • @bugaboo-bill

But Bill, even if you never load a voyage and just sail until you meet another crew you’ll

    • fight another ship
    • alliance a fort or voyage
    • fight a Meg
    • fight a Kraken
    • just sail

and it’s always the same. Because neither your character or the environment evolve, repetition is this games Achilles heel. Without something to aim for such as commendations, purchasable content and the like there’s really very little to keep people playing.

I think the proof of this is that EVERY content update pushes “prizes” for grinding. It’s the weak glue that keeps people here.

The one thing that could make a difference is the people you encounter. However, because of so much poor PvP you can play an entire session only for people to sail away or attack you when you’re away from your ship so no opportunity to dialogue.

I dunno, your approach sounds perfect but I don’t think that many share your views or experiences.

  • @dadiodude

There are only few or very less players like me around.
I would like the game had no levels, no journeys, no reputation systems.
A sandbox only, sail, find chests from messages in a bottle, fight skeletons, sharks, megalodons, kraken and immerse.
Buy cosmetics for gold you find in chests.
Skeleton Captains woulds have maps too, you had to find them as they spawn random everywhere with their crews.
Megs and Kraken may have eaten chests or captains with Maps or a message in a bottle what lead to more chests = gold for cosmetics.
The Tales would be as they are a story for the sandbox.
The Merchants would be the only faction to deliver goods from A to B.
No levels or rep, just gold to buy cosmetics and all cosmetics available from scratch, nothing gated behind rep only gold.

The whole grind is distracting from immersing, doing self provided tasks, roleplaying, sandbox gameplay.
Instead grind and bragg about levels, insults like you havent earned to be a legend, performanced focussed aproach like speedrunning, tweaking and exploiting where it is possible.
That's not playing honestly, that's what i call gaming the system.

Less people aproach the game like intended and really play, interact socially , make fun, roleplay, immerse and are able to contribute and enrich the world they are playing in.
No they reduce everything to one formular: grind it off, completely exagerate about it and play the game 1000 hours in a couple of weeks and then complain that there is nothing to grind for anymore or the game panders to casuals and remove beginners from Arena and more elitism by addicted gamers compensating and growing their ePeen.

I have yet to meet some roleplayers doing what games like this are made for.
They also bring a tabletop rpg what is about to tell your decisions, story and roleplay the game, immerse into the world enlive, enrich and contribute to it.

    Progression segregates players.
Even when only about cosmetics it cause people to be jealous, rush things, exagerate time playing games, exagerate about the meaning of playing games and pixels, make them work it off instead to play.
Make them hamsters in a treadmill operating on slotmachienes.

It's hopeless, people unlearned to play.
They work, earn, grind, exploit, rush, speedrun and miss to play the game entirely.

  • @bugaboo-bill

If a game is meant to be played a certain way then some things need to be curated to “steer” people. People will only revert to type if not. We have the game that Rare produced being played the way people believe it should be played. No right or wrong. The only grind in the game is the grind that Rare created.

Sandbox isn’t always a good thing. Sometimes a little manipulation is needed.

  • @dadiodude

    You are right of course.
Rare created a sandbox first then added NPC, factions, levels, cosmetics.
As i always say most gamers concentrate only on grinding this.
They completely miss sandbox play and to create content for themself and others.
Do self provided tasks, roleplay etc...
Contribute, enlive and enrich the world / environment.
The "quality" of someones experience is heavily depending of the other players you meet.
Unfortunately the majority is less empathic, more egocentric and taking it all too serious imho.
Therefore toxicity and a lot of desparation takes place.
If people would just play together and for sure do the voyages, tales and commendations but dont focus on this, but focus on playing together especially when competing!
Would take care for the fellow players and their fun.
As above contribute, enlive and enrich the gsmeworld the experience for everybody would improve.
Kill and get killed with a smile on your face, laughing and taking "revenge".
That's is what i think all games are for, but that is not what majority of gamers make playing games about.
The game is great, the players arent that much and thats the only problem.
If Mr. K1llRoxx0r with an k/d ratio of 10/1 would not compensate and only grow his ePeen, but be an empathic, for fun roleplayer there would be no issue encountering Mr. C4sualN00b with a k/d ratio of 1/50!

What the progamers lack is what Uncle Ben said to Peter.
"With great power comes great responsibility."
But the ones with great power dont care for others, they are out to "own" others.
    That's what the game lacks.
Game rules and setting is fine.
But majority miss a playful aproach and therefore the exagerating addicts compensating spoil the game for others and spread their elitism.
To take progression that serious and to focus on progression when it is clearly seconded (horizontal, not gamechanging) supports this.
Players, sorry gamers of today are somewhat "brainwashed" by slotmachiene mechanics.

  • My experiences playing games, and thats more years others are alive tell me, there is no rules or restrictions that work good.
Freedom to act like you want is always best for games!
Not for serious sports competitions, real life and such, but for playing games.
The only thing we need is more players playing with a playful, fun orientated, roleplayish, for fellow players caring aproach.
The fun on the cost of others is no fun, that's toxicity.
We can fight all day if we dont take it too serious and everybody is responsible to contribute to that playful atmosphere.
We dont need pirates who want you to ragequit and we dont need pirates who exagerate about loosing loot.
There is a middlegroud the majority miss.

  • @guybrush3pwood2 wow i would love to have a housing system. Like Animal Crossing haha.

  • Repetitive? Have you seen the amount of commendations you can earn?!

  • How about new enemy types that take new weapons to damage?

Earth Elementals guarding very ancient treasure takes lighting infused swords to do full damage. Tie it in with OoS have a OoS merchant in the tent as well that sells these new weapons for a steep price. It would give people with lots of gold new things to buy that would continually drive the new beats of a story, every update they could come out with some new type of enemy that has a weapon that would fully damage it. You would totally be able to kill them without it but it would take a long time and it would give new players a higher reason to go out and do voyages to attain these new weapons to make their explorations of the islands easier.

Toss in some new fangled voyages tied in with them. Maybe some Tall Tales, maybe a new type of voyage exclusive to PL's. Get the PL's out there with these weapons and cool voyages and new players will feel amazed at them and will want to keep on their journey to be a Pirate Legend as well.

Repetitive? Have you seen the amount of commendations you can earn?!

Commendations are like achievements. A games achievement quantity has nothing to do with repetitive gameplay. At the main core of the game, you got get treasure and sell it. A basic and repetitive go to point B then return items to point A. Each faction suffers from this except bilge rats (Which is like the games achievements), Hunters call (A fishing mini game), and tall tales. Out of all these 3, only tall tales has a chance of becoming a main faction like gold hoarders or order of souls as a story mode that could boost reward gains and pirate warfare, the problem is that it needs to be greatly improved upon. Other than that every other gameplay mechanic is boring. I'm going to go crazy the next time everyone votes to grind forts or do regular main voyages... that's a problem

  • How would you fix this so-called repetition then? And no, don't tell me "hirable NPCs" alright...

  • @bugaboo-bill

A big part of the the game is built about earning goldcoins to customize your ship.

"See Rare has made this game for players who play games, not for gamers who game systems, work off / grind levels to get rewarded."

This is absolutetly false. Before release they put a lot of weight on the players becoming Pirate Legends. Get off your high horses man.

  • @sharktoothjake

NPC crewmates is a bad idea.

This is a multiplayer game about playing with, y’know, real people. When I see a ship, I shouldn’t have to wonder if it’s a solo player on a Galleon with 3 NPC helpers. I should be expecting to meet 4 unique pirates controlled by real people on that ship.

That’s what creates the magic of encountering other crews.
