WC Review: "melee combat also feels clunky, crying out for some love at Rare's end"

    This is an extract from Windows Central's review of the Sea Of Thives anniversary update, but this is something that is repeated in several reviews, and I think we all think in a similar way.

    The combat system needs a redesign, more agile, dynamic and personally, I think that the general damage of the weapons should be reduced to allow a greater game with the new types of food... what does it matter to have 100 types of food if with a single shot you reduce 90/100% of life?

  • Agreed that combat is clunky. When I think about a new name for the game it would be the Sea of Clunkiness.

  • The Cutlass feels awful since they nerfed it. Previously, you could use the cutlass in cluttered spaces (the ship) but that doesn't work anymore. Alternatively, if someone does get a combo off, you literally can do nothing about it since they increased the stunlock. I just hate fighting with and against it now.

    I found that it seems to be whoever lands the first slash with the sword wins because if you are blocking you can't move and the block has to be exact otherwise it seems to have no effect. Also because you can walk thru enemy players you can stand in the middle of a person and slash away and it won't matter if they block because there's no way from the position to face someone directly because they are inside of you. The previous sword fighting mechanics seemed to be great imho. I loved how you could parry and block and it was all very strategic. Now you can simply run while attacking and if you land that first hit it will stun the other player and allow you to get that combo in which mean if the other player can't block after the combo they are dead by the next two swings. Very lazy.

  • Sword play has been completely broken in this update. Why it was changed I don't know, but it is atrocious now.
