Another thread about Open Crew issues.

  • Please address Open Crew's.

I am a casual guy, I just want to play SoT, press "Open Crew" and have"the most rewarding experience" as the tool tip states.

This isn't the case however, once I battle through constantly getting matched into high ping servers, almost all the time the crew is either reforming, dead and leaving or falling apart for other reasons.

Without exaggeration it honestly takes me upwards of over an hour to join a crew that is in my region and not in the midst of leaving.

This is probably my 3rd or 4th post on this, I am just over how inherently bad the Open Crew experience is.

So for one final time I am going to offer my suggestions:

A series of options for the player to elect. :: Warn players that selecting these options may increase match making time.

Region match selection box :: Give players a choice to only match in their region, dutifully inform them that there may be longer wait times if they select this option.

A new adventure :: Selecting this option will ensure you only join a new crew not on an existing voyage.

Match level :: Selecting this option will ensure you only join with pirates of a similar lvl to you + - 5 levels from your highest faction.

I don't care if these options are hidden under an "advanced crew tab" or something but honestly something needs to be done.

Relying on Xbox / Discord is annoying, I just want to fire up the game and join a half competent crew in my region.

Some other suggestions for the general game play loop that would assist. Throw some carrots at players for doing tasks:

    • When they put supplies in barrel's, a UI toast "supply master!" or something to that effect with a small amount of gold as a reward. This creates a sub conscious mindset of doing "things" player's inherently chase the dings..

    • As per the above, if a player adjust the sails, or helps raises the anchor basically anything they do that assists in creating a functional crew, drip feed rewards or sounds to them to create a positive mindset.

Last time I harp on this. At this point it would be more effective to have the "Open Crew" button press, open the SoT discord for players to find a crew, it's pathetic.

  • I would definitely like to see the 'region search' option, not only for open crews, but closed crews too. Everything becomes so much harder - barrel contents not loading, not emptying, still showing items you already looted. Skellys that break combos, dont stagger after lunges, hit you after they die. Shooting cannons while accounting for swell AND lag is horrible. Xbox players still dont have a ping counter, so region select would be a great QoL improvement.

The other options don't really bother me, but region select would be great.

  • @gianni001 a region search would be good
But what do you need a lvl-search for? Everybody is equal in this game, PL is the same as a starter...except the experience

  • This is why I either play with my friends or I play alone, too many issues

  • @schwammlgott experience is the point. Sometimes, you just don't feel like explaining the game to new pirates, over and over again.

A few weeks ago I saw a guy with the founder sails, anchored at an island, the front towards the island and the sails down...so there are "older" pirates who have no clue

  • @schwammlgott Not disagreeing entirely.

However, generally speaking, higher levels mean more game time which should be a general indicator of game knowledge and most of the time would yield a similar experience level to your own.

Because SoT does an extremely horrendous job of not only explaining the basics of the game but incentive's co-operative play, the general "noobie" player is beyond useless without accommodating direction from the more experienced in the crew.

Sometimes I enjoy helping new pirates after I've battled the region matching issues. Sometimes however, I just want to have a fun experience with people who are halfway competent.

SoT desperately needs "carrots" for players. Did you notice on a galleon and a brig, when the sails are correctly angled into the wind you get this chime sound? Things like that, but more pronounced.

Noone will disagree that the entire experience is more enjoyable when a crew works together. Make it so the game incentivizes this co-operation.

There is so much that could be done. But what needs to be done is so minor and easy imo.

  • @gianni001 A big no to the any rewards to just being a competent ally. You dealing with those types of players is the disadvantage of open crews.

The open crew is programmed so that crews are filled up as it goes. This way to make sure everyone gets a member since some regions have different play times then others as well as player population.

You by saying that LFG and Discord is annoying are suggesting that you are willing to put up with the Open crew nonsense.

Now to address your ping issues.

Here is the fix to your problem for open crews.

Start a game on whatever ship you want on a CLOSED CREW. When you spawn you will be on a local server with no ping issues since the game is either putting you in or creating a server in your local area. Then all you need to do is go to your crew tap and change crew type to "open".

    There you go.

There you go hope this helps.

Open Crew - “The most rewarding experience” - lollllll They should change that tool tip to “The most confusing experience” ...The last time I messed around with open crews, it really made me chuckle. First, I joined an open crew galleon. When I spawned in, the boat was sailing straight out of bounds and the other 3 members of the ship were obviously clueless, allowing the boat to sink, not even playing shanties for the achievement. Then, I joined an open crew brigantine. As soon as I spawn in, the boat sinks. We respawn at an outpost with one member AFK and the other running around talking to each npc. Then, I joined an open crew sloop. As soon as I spawn in, the other member of the ship starts shooting and sword swiping at me, like he’s upset that I’m there. I check the voyage and map to begin sailing towards the next objective thinking I’m helping him. As soon as I raise anchor, he drops it. I raise it again, he drops it again. “Maybe there’s still something at this island”, I thought, but he just kept sword swiping at me. So I join another open crew sloop... he’s AFK. I wait 5 minutes, still AFK. So I join a closed crew sloop. Serenity at last!

We shouldn't need to select a "region" search option. This should be built into the matchmaking so that it is done automatically. Putting players in servers on the other side of the world is going to negatively affect a player's experience in this game, especially if they are playing "Open Crew" with people they don't know. I wish Rare would make it so this doesn't happen unless the player chooses it on their own through something like LFG or Discord.

  • While I do agree that there should be a few matchmaking options, I don't think players should be rewarded with gold for simply operating the ship. I also think that adding supplies to the barrels and getting a UI prompt would get super annoying very quickly.

  • @gianni001

I can certainly understand why someone would want matchmaking based on reputation levels and such. I really do, and there have been times where I wished matchmaking worked that way. But I think part of Sea of Thieves' multiplayer dynamic is that weather you're a Pirate Legend or a brand new sailor, you're playing together. New pirates learning from the old. Non-legends getting the chance to take on Athena's Fortune voyages with a legend.

That's a nice dynamic, but I think the problem is that a lot of people don't have the patience for it which is unfortunate. I have good times teaching new Pirates the ropes, because I remember what it was like to be new to the game and to see this game and all of its wonder for the first time. And when I join open crews, that's what my expectation is - working with new pirates. If I feel like taking on more serious tasks with experienced players I go with closed crew, either using my usual crew or assembling one on Discord.

I don't think relying on Discord is as painstaking as you seem to think it is. There's no shortage of crewmates looking for a session there.

Also, I don't agree with giving rewards for simple basic tasks like stocking supplies or managing the ship.
