Game running rampant with cheaters

  • Can we do something about cheaters in this game? ever since the latest update, it seems every server that my crew and I come across has at least 1 ship hacking in it. Just today, we have come across 3 ships hacking all in 3 different servers and within an hour of each other. It's getting to a point where its just not that fun anymore and my friends and I absolutely love this game. We hate seeing hackers and cheaters take over. Were always coming across players lag switching, teleporting, no-clipping, modifying their damage so they output more damage than what you supposed to be able to, (3 sword slashes from full health vs the normal 5 to kill from full health), players taking a blunderbuss to the face at point blank range and getting away as if nothing happened, modifying the amount of damage they take, etc.

Is their any sort of anti-cheat that RARE can or has put in place that can catch these players and ban them?

  • Hey there, I actually haven’t run into any hackers in quite a long time so I have a hard time believing you are running into at least one on every server you play - I’m not calling you a liar, but are you absolutely sure about this? There’s a good chance you might be having some lag on your end that’s causing this to happen you.

  • Rare has no tolerance towards hackers and cheaters and since launch of the game has been on a pretty good streak of not letting this happen bcuz they dont want their game tarnished either.

I'm sure that they appreciate you finding hackers and cheaters so they can do something about it. I'm sure people have tried and had their fun short lived bcuz Rare is really good at watching for that kind of stuff.

  • I'm playing since day 1 and I've never encounter a single hacker/cheater in this game. [Mod edited] Seriously, it seems like another complaint post from propably freshly baked Pirate Legend who just cant admit that some lower reputation player managed to kill them in PvP.

  • @xix-zeno-xix I’m not a hacker nor cheater and I can point blank one shot with a blunder buss. It seems these statements are assumptions with lack of evidence.

  • @ESL-Cruiser Please refrain from the use of derogatory language directed at another player. It is a violation of our forum rules, and your post has been edited accordingly.

    Derogatory Language
Name calling, personal attacks and using derogatory language against Community Members, Rare Employees, Global Moderators or Deckhands is not acceptable. Using such language will result in a warning, then temporary ban from the Forums and a final warning. If the action is persistent or increasingly aggressive, a permanent ban from the Forums will be issued.

  • It's a bit ridiculous to assume their hacking.
Whats the chances of coming across 3 ships hacking on 3 different servers in the one day.
It sounds more like a connection problem either player side or server side.
If you have any evidence send it onto rare and let them investigate.

So far this has been one of the most "cheat free"games I have played in over a decade.

If you suspect some one of cheating you need to report them as soon as possible so that Rare can investigate and BAN them..

I assure you they take this very seriously and will ban cheating players if you take the time to do your part.

I have bumped into laggy players but this is often caused by their horrible connection and not a malicious lag hack.. You should consider that before you label some one a cheat. Remember that the servers do support people from quite a long way off, and if you're playing at odd hours for your time zone then you're likely to play with and VS players who are in a very distant time zone.

If you do suspect cheating do not delay, report them!

  • I'll be the 1st to tell you that I just got cheated out of a game just now. Mid-session, my brother asks me to check out something on YouTube, so I open the app on my Xbox, watch his video, and then come back to...

A splash screen? Where'd my game go? Rare, why hast thou forsaken me time and time again? First, the melee combat, then the radial menus, the splitting of the playerbase via Arena and platforms... What could you possibly do wrong next?

  • Along with players having connection issues, the servers themselves have problems from time to time... for a while now, I've watched my ping go from 60-ish to 1100 over and over again; I have no issues with any other games or apps, and this problem has been occuring for me since the last update, so the problem appears to be Rare's servers, IMO.

OP, just try to keep in mind that these issues do exist. Not everyone you've encountered in your original post is cheating.

  • @andyxxpanda1290 okay but I dont recall calling anyone a hacker/cheater in my previous post but I'm glad you have the luck on your side to do one shot kills (I can too but very rarely cuz I usually use pistol sword combo myself lol) but I agree, with such accusations I feel also would need a bit more evidence to provide a better understanding of the flaw the OP of this thread is trying to get at.

I'm srry if anything I said before made you feel that way tho sir, my bad bro. :)

  • @kin6-nothin6 Never seen a hacker in this game, gonna assume you haven't either. Makes much more sense that you are just plan wrong than assuming everyone who beats you is hacking.

  • More than once I've been accused of being a hacker simply because I killed them.

100% sure. the lag switcher we met earlier had a damage modifier on that increased his damage AND he also attacked with his sword twice as fast. I have never lagged in this game and neither has my crew aside from the normal lag spike, this dude lagged me out of the game, radial menu for bucket, planks, banana's, cannonballs, etc. actually froze on the screen right before. this was not the normal type of lag I have had in this game and the lag only started once this specific person had either got within 50ft of us or was right on top of us.

  • @esl-cruiser yes im PL and im also max ranked Athena buddy. I've put in HOURS in this game and know the difference between server lag and player added lag. its pretty easy to tell the difference.

  • @reavermachete50 I have no issue losing...when its fair. I have 3 other players who all witnessed the same exact thing as I have. I've seen people no-clip and teleport as well. hackers are there whether you know it or not. assuming that I haven't seen a hacker makes no sense. I have video evidence of one specific no clip/teleport. hard to tell exactly what happened.

  • @jack-flintlock If the lag did not start as soon as this player got within range of us, I would agree with you that it was just server side lag. but the fact that it happened as soon as he got close to us and then disappeared as if it never happened as soon as he was taken out and sunk...that's quite the coincidence don't ya think? this was also pretty early in my time zone, about 6pm, so its not like it was at 2:30am when your trying to matchmake with players from Australia while your in America.

  • @frankzappa-fan I think one of my buddies got evidence of one guy modding/hacking., just by the way he was attacking with the sword is enough to label him a hacker/modder. easily twice as fast as normal sword slash speed. went right through your guard as well. had my guard up, below deck and he was right in front of me yet still going through my guard with normal slashes, no jumping.

  • @cstrap its not EVERY server we play on. the 4th server thankfully had no hacks on it so we were at least able to enjoy ourselves.

  • I have nothing really useful to add.. but once there was a post where a crew was accusing other crew of teleport "hacking". They were following a galleon and the galleon crew "appeared" on their boat.

Sadly in this game, most of the hackers are players just more skilled(or know a way or two how to bypass certain animation/delays.

    So not really hacking.
And as somebody said, its the most hacker free game in a long while.

  • Thanks to the latest update there's a new exploit that allows players to ignore the delay after their 3-swing combo, so they just keep swinging until you're good and dead. Getting around your block is just a byproduct of the devs having increased the movement with a sword, but not improving block along with it - also it doesn't help that you can't move, jump, turn, or really do anything on a successful block. All of the power belongs to the offense right now.

Cheating? No. Bad game design? Yes.

  • I just wanna share some personal input on this topic -

I've only ran into one obvious hacker during my almost 1000 hours in this game. When i say obvious i mean literally shooting from his ship through the hull of my ship and killing me. Could even see the bullet going through the hull.

I've encountered a fair share of obvious hackers across plenty of games, i know when i see one. This is one of the most hacker free games i've played by far.

With that said from a personal experience the chance of you running into 1 crew hacking across 3 different servers in a row seems extremely unlikely.

Hit-reg in this game is a major issue, which comes with lag. Either you were having connection issues, the server was having issues or he had a high ping.

A lot of weird things can happen when there are huge connection differences.

I can obviously be wrong but i play with enough people every single day and i can't even remember a conversation coming up in regards to hackers.

Just giving my two cents, if you have obvious evidence then for sure shoot a report over to Xbox/Rare.

  • @kin6-nothin6 Yesterday my crew was doing an Athena’s however we was getting stalked by online players and we managed to do the Athena’s but when we sold the Athena’s chest they came and we ended up in a fight and they were teleporting all over place.

  • @kin6-nothin6 but crying about cheats.

Yet I play 10 hours a day and have never seen one. They say perception of cheating is relative to an individuals skill... I.E. the lower your skill the more likely you are to think someone else is cheating. the higher your skill the less likely you are to think that.

  • They aren't cheaters.
It's the game itself being bad.

Every update rare releases seem so strain their servers further causing fake hitmarkers, i have hit people 8 times in a row and they didn't die, it seems to get worse and worse with each update.

Again, not cheating, it's an issue with their backend.

Since when phrase "GIT GUD" is considered derogatory? Im honestly asking, since for all I know its primarly a meme and secondary its literally means "just get better" - and its hardly counts as an insult.

@kin6-nothin6 said in Game running rampant with cheaters:

I've run into several PLs - quite a lot of them recently - and tbh if anything it only means someone's put a lot of time into the game. It does not automatically means that was quality spent time since I've seen PL's unable to even coordinate their crew to properly manage the galleon so having Athena lvl 10 is not an argument behind you being indisputably correct about your claim and it is still highly possible that you've met someone who was simply better than you and managed to defeat you.

  • @esl-cruiser How do you not see that phrase as derogatory? It's insulting and in no way helpful.

You forgot to mention that it could also be any combination, or all, of the above.

Seems like nowadays any word can be considered insulting. Even someone wearing a yellow hat can be called for being insulting to someone.

  • Guys dont derail^ the subject in this thread with an arguement as it's not helpful to the topic at hand.

Feedback to the topic only please. The moderators will tell you the same.

It's very simple, if you find cheaters record them and send it in via Twitter to the SoT page (I think at least, I've never done it yet cuz I haven't had a reason to) or submit a ticket to get results.

Reinforce the subject with related feedback to the topic.

See ya on the seas mateys.

  • I hardly see hackers, but weird things happen in multiplayer online games, due to runtime problems, network lags etc. You hit someone who is not there, because you suffer lags, so the person will not be wounded, then you accuse this person to be cheating, f.e.

If you have any proof, report them.

  • @cstrap Because you aren't running into any hackers./cheaters doesn't mean its not a problem. It is still very much an issue albeit not as frequent when the game launched. And there is still a website that switches its name that is selling cheats to this very day.

And on top of that there isn't any form of anti-cheat in the game so besides reporting which is a frustrating thing in on itself, there is nothing stopping players from using them.

And even when they get caught and banned, all they do is delete that account (at least on PC) create a new one and do it all over again.

One problem when trying to identify if someone is indeed cheating, is the state of the servers themselves. Instability issues/lag spikes/hit registration problems can blur the lines between an obvious cheat/hack or server issues.

So to sum up. stating YOU haven't seen any cheaters is a inward narrow view of the issue that doesn't take the rest of the player population into account. And on the flip side, just because your hits aren't killing other players, or you lag out when near other players, it doesn't necessarily mean they are cheating.

There are several ways to clarify these issues, one obvious one is implementing an anti-cheat. Similar games that run on the same or similar engine that have them, its about time SoT does too.

Another possible way is to migrate alternate accounts into one account in the Pirate profile. The premise being, the player would have a main account that then will be asked to link any existing accounts to said account and allow new users to create "Alt" Pirates in the pirate profile.

The purpose behind this is something I touched on earlier. When players get their accounts banned they would then delete said account and do it all over again. With the system I mentioned above if they were to have their account have action taken against it, be it a ban/suspension, that player would lose access to all pirates without the ability to just simply create a new email address and abuse the existing system.

This, I believe would deter players from using cheats and not only that being verbally abusive, harassing other players and anything that could compromise access to Sea of Thieves.

Even though I feel like making posts like this is like throwing a pebble into a black hole, I hope something can be done about all these issues. because after all we love this game, otherwise , we wouldn't be here making these posts.

Fare thee well and see you on the seas everyone!
